3 Crosstalk Detection

Crosstalk Detection

3.1 Overview
Users are likely to complain if crosstalk frequently occurs on the network. Identifying the source
of a crosstalk problem is difficult if the information related to the crosstalk is not recorded. To
solve this problem, the Crosstalk Detection feature has been introduced to log the information
about the call affected by crosstalk and to provide an alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk.
With the Crosstalk Detection feature, the BSC automatically traces the call and checks whether
crosstalk occurs during the call. If crosstalk occurs, the information about the call, including the
serving cell, occupied channel, and serving TRX, is recorded. Such information helps
maintenance engineers identify a problem without reproducing the problem.
With the alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk, the BSC periodically records the number of
times crosstalk occurs. When this number exceeds a predefined threshold, the BSC reports an
alarm. This helps engineers to identify network quality problems and solve these problems before
users have an opportunity to notice. Crosstalk Detection applies only to the following speech
coding schemes: full rate (FR), enhanced full rate (EFR), adaptive multirate full rate (AMR_FR)
(excluding 12.2 kbit/s), and adaptive multirate half rate (AMR_HR) (excluding 6.7 kbit/s and
7.4 kbit/s).
This feature is implemented by the BSC, in collaboration with the transcoder (TC) and the BTS.
Therefore, only the crosstalk caused by BSS internal faults can be detected. Any crosstalk caused
by Um-interface or MSC faults cannot be detected by using this feature.
Crosstalk Detection has the following benefits:
l

Identifies speech quality problems as soon as possible according to alarm information. This
improves network quality.

Enables the BSC to log the information about the call affected by crosstalk, facilitating
problem location. This improves maintenance efficiency.

The CROCALTMTHRD(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter specifies whether to enable Crosstalk

Detection. To enable the feature, set the CROCALTMTHRD(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter
to a value other than 255. Using Crosstalk Detection does not affect the overall BSC performance.

3 Crosstalk Detection

3.2 Technical Description

3.2.1 Working Principles
The working principles of the Crosstalk Detection feature are as follows:
The BSC fills a call ID in the idle bits of the FR, EFR, AMR_FR, or AMR_HR speech frames.
The BTS and TC then determine whether the call ID is the same as that saved at the BTS and
TC. If the call ID in the code stream is different from that saved at the BTS or TC in the period
specified by the CROCALTMTHRD(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, the BTS or TC
determines that crosstalk is affecting the call and sends a crosstalk detection report message to
the BSC. Upon receiving the message, the BSC logs the information about the call, including
the occupied Abis resources, occupied Ater resources, serving BTS, serving cell, serving TRX,
occupied channel, and occupied TC resources. Meanwhile, the BSC triggers the alarm
mechanism specific to crosstalk. This ensures that maintenance engineers can easily obtain the
crosstalk information.
The Crosstalk Detection feature can be enabled only when all interfaces use TDM transmission.

3.2.2 Obtaining Crosstalk-related Information

The BSC obtains the following crosstalk-related information:
l

Information about the desired speech signals and undesired speech signals

Information about BTS network connection

Crosstalk-related alarms

Information About the Desired Speech Signals and About the Undesired Speech
Signals
Upon detecting crosstalk, the BTS or TC sends a crosstalk detection report message to the BSC.
The BSC receives the message and logs the information about the aforementioned resources
occupied by the call.
The BSC records the call IDs of the desired speech signals and the undesired speech signals.
Based on the call ID of the undesired speech signals, the BSC obtains information about the
undesired call and records the information in the log. The information about the undesired call
includes the serving TRX, occupied channel, crosstalk detection type, crosstalk occurrence time,
and call index.

Information About BTS Network Connection

When crosstalk occurs during a call, only the information about the serving TRX and the
occupied channel is recorded in the log at the BTS. Crosstalk or one-way audio, however, may
also occur if BTS network connection fails to be established. Therefore, the BSC must record
the information about the BTS network connections for the desired speech signals and undesired
speech signals. The BSC obtains the information about the BTS network connection through
the operation and maintenance link (OML) over the Abis interface, and records the information
on the OMU.

Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description

3 Crosstalk Detection

Frequent reporting of the BTS network connection information may result in Abis interface
congestion. The BSC and BTS must use a flow control strategy to prevent this problem. The
GetBtsNetTblTimeThd(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter specifies the interval at which the BTS
network connection information is reported. Within this interval, the BSC sends the BTS three
different messages to obtain the information about the following BTS network connections:
TMU upper-layer network connection, SCP upper-layer network connection, and DSP upperlayer network connection.
The information element (IE) "ucChanno" has been added to the messages between the BSC
and BTS to synchronize the crosstalk information recorded in the log and the actual crosstalk
information. The BSC sends a message with the "ucChanno" IE to the BTS and then receives a
response from the BTS and saves the value of the "ucChanno" IE contained in the response to
the log. In addition, the BSC saves the BTS network connection information to the OMU board
in binary. The current information about the BTS network connection can be sent to the BSC in
the form of a single frame or a multi-frame. When the information is sent to the BSC through a
multi-frame, the BSC buffers the multi-frame, compresses it after receiving the entire message,
and saves it to the OMU board in binary.

Crosstalk-related Alarms
The BSC measures the number of times crosstalk occurs on the BSC every 60 minutes.
If the number of times crosstalk occurs in 60 minutes is greater than the value of the
SPEECHCHANALARMTHRES(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, the BSC reports a BSS
Internal Voice Channel Abnormal alarm. In the alarm, the "Voice Abnormal Type" is crosstalk
and the number of times the voice is abnormal is the number of times crosstalk occurs. If the
number of times crosstalk occurs in the next 60 minutes is less than or equal to the value of the
SPEECHCHANRESUMEALARMTHRES(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, the BSC clears
the BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal alarm. In this case, the alarm information includes
the actual number of times crosstalk occurs. Note that the BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal
alarm cannot be reported repeatedly.

3.2.3 Starting and Stopping Crosstalk Detection

To enable the Cross Detection feature, the following operations must be performed on the LMT:
l

Run the SET BSCBASIC command with CROCALTMTHRD(BSC6900,BSC6910) set

to a value other than 255.

Run the SET GCELLBTSSOFTPARA command with CROCALCHKSW

(BSC6900,BSC6910) set to ON(ON).

Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description

4 One-Way Audio Detection

One-Way Audio Detection

4.1 Overview
One-way audio and no audio are the two most common speech problems that customers complain
about. Identifying a one-way audio or no audio problem, however, is difficult if the necessary
information is not recorded in a timely manner. The One-Way Audio Detection feature enables
the BSC to log the one-way audio information and report an alarm, which facilitates problem
identification and location.
With this feature, the BSC and BTS automatically analyze speech information to check for oneway audio. Upon detecting one-way audio, the BSC logs related information, such as cell ID,
serving TRX, channel, port/slot/subrack number of the interface board on the BSC, and the
subrack/slot/path number of the DSP processing the call. This helps operation and maintenance
(OM) personnel obtain accurate data without simulating the problem.
This feature allows the BSC to periodically check the number of one-way audio records. If the
number exceeds the preset threshold, the BSC reports an alarm. If the number of one-way audio
records is less than the preset threshold, the BSC clears the alarm. This alarm mechanism helps
OM personnel identify one-way audio in advance, minimizing customer complaints.
This feature requires that the BSC and BTS cooperate. Therefore, this feature can detect oneway audio caused by BSS internal faults. In addition, this feature enables the BSC to detect oneway audio caused by MSC faults in A over IP mode. However, in A over TDM mode, the
BSC6900 has to be assisted by the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function to detect
one-way audio caused by MSC faults.
The One-Way Audio Detection feature has the following benefits:
l

Quickly locates speech quality problems on the network based on alarm information,
improving the network quality.

Logs one-way audio information, which facilitates problem location.

Enabling one-way audio detection has a minor impact on the overall performance of the BSC
and the BTS.

4 One-Way Audio Detection

4.2.1 Working Principles

The implementation of one-way audio detection is mainly controlled by the BSC. The detection
processes are different in TDM and IP transmission modes. Figure 4-1 shows one-way audio
detection functions supported by Huawei GBSS.
Figure 4-1 One-way audio detections in Huawei GBSS

Class-2 one-way audio detection

In Abis over TDM mode, the BSC and BTS separately monitor the uplink and downlink
speech frames over the Abis interface to perform class-1 one-way audio detection.
If the proportion of errored frames exceeds the value of EXCEPFRAMETHRES
(BSC6900,BSC6910) within the period specified by MUTECHECKCLASS1PERIOD
(BSC6900,BSC6910), there is class-1 one-way audio. The BSC and the BTS then start
class-2 one-way audio detection.
During class-2 one-way audio detection, the BSC and the BTS send fixed test frames to
each other at an interval specified by DETECTFRAMEPERIOD(BSC6900,BSC6910)
according to the class-1 one-way audio detection result within the period specified by
MUTECHECKPEIROD(BSC6900,BSC6910). If the peer end can receive the test frames,
it determines that there was not one-way audio. If the peer end cannot receive any test
frames, it determines that there was one-way audio and the BSC logs the call information.

IP-based one-way audio detection

In Abis over IP mode, the BSC and the BTS periodically send each other monitoring frames
that contain the total number of sent packets. The BSC logs one-way audio in either of the
following scenarios:
The BSC or the BTS does not receive any monitoring frame within the period specified
by MUTECHECKCLASS1PERIOD(BSC6900,BSC6910).
The BSC or the BTS receives speech packets and monitoring frames but the packet loss
rate calculated based on the number of received packets and the number of sent packets
carried on a monitoring frame exceeds the value of EXCEPFRAMETHRES
(BSC6900,BSC6910).
In A over IP mode, the BSC logs one-way audio when the packet loss rate calculated based
on the number of received packets and the number of sent packets carried on a Real-Time
Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) packet exceeds the value of EXCEPFRAMETHRES
(BSC6900,BSC6910) within the period specified by MUTECHECKCLASS1PERIOD
(BSC6900,BSC6910).

Issue 01 (2014-04-30)

A interface CIC one-way audio detection: In A over TDM mode, the BSC needs to be
assisted by the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function to detect one-way audio.
The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function is controlled by CicDMuteSwitch.
This function works as follows: In the period specified by CicDMutePeriod, if the
proportion of the number of CICs experiencing one-way audio on a port to the total number

GSM BSS
Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description

4 One-Way Audio Detection

of available CICs on the port is greater than the value of CicDMuteThre and the one-way
audio persists longer than a duration specified by CicDMuteTime, ALM-21590 CIC
Downlink One-Way Mute Alarm is reported.
NOTE

After the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function is enabled, a DSP in the TCS compares
two consecutive sampled values. If the number of times the sampled values are different is larger
than the value of CicDMuteDifCnt, the DSP determines that no one-way audio occurs for the ongoing
call. Otherwise, it determines that one-way audio occurs for the ongoing call.

To sum up, different one-way audio detection functions are used when the GBSS works in the
following four transmission modes:
l

Abis over TDM and A over TDM: The class-2 one-way audio detection function works
over the Abis interface. The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function works.

Abis over TDM and A over IP: The class-2 one-way audio detection function works over
the Abis interface, and the IP-based one-way audio detection function works over the A
interface.

Abis over IP and A over TDM: The IP-based one-way audio detection function works over
the Abis interface. The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function works.

Abis over IP and A over IP: The IP-based one-way audio detection function works over
both the Abis and A interfaces.

One-way audio detection can be performed simultaneously in different transmission modes

without affecting each other, and all detection results are recorded in the voice log.

4.2.2 Obtaining One-Way Audio Information

The BSC obtains the following one-way audio information:
l

Information about a call affected by one-way audio, recorded in the voice log

One-way audio alarms

Information About a Call Affected by One-Way Audio

The BSC records call information in the voice log when the BSC or the BTS detects one-way
audio. The one-way audio log type is specified by MuteTestLogStyle(BSC6900,BSC6910).
NOTE

After one-way audio occurs, SpeechErrorForceHOSwitch(BSC6900,BSC6910) determines whether to

initiate a handover. It is recommended that this parameter be set to OFF(Off).

One-Way Audio Alarms

SpeechAlmPeriod(BSC6900,BSC6910) specifies an interval at which the BSC reports one-way
audio-related alarms. The BSC reports the number of times one-way audio occurs on the BSC
every 60 minutes by default.
If the number of one-way audio occurrences reaches the value of
SPEECHCHANALARMTHRES(BSC6900,BSC6910), the BSC reports ALM-21814 BSS
Internal Voice Channel Abnormal with Failure Type set to One-way Audio and Number of
One-Way Audio set to the number of one-way audio occurrences. If the number of times oneway audio occurs in the next 60 minutes is less than or equal to the value of

BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal if necessary. Note that ALM-21814 BSS Internal Voice
Channel Abnormal cannot be reported again before it is cleared.

GSM BSS
Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description

7 Fault Analysis

Fault Analysis

Two methods are available for locating one-way audio:

Method 1: Using the Voice Log Analysis function

1.

Click Device Maintenance on the LMT main page. The Device Maintenance tab page is
displayed.

2.

In the BSC Maintenance tab page, choose BSC Maintenance > Maintain User
Resources > Voice Log Analysis. The Voice Log Analysis dialog box is displayed shown
in Figure 7-1.
Take BSC6900 as an example. On the Voice Log Analysis tab page, select
Mute_Lever2 or Mute_IP in the Log Type based on the BSC transmission mode and
specify Time Last. Then, click Analyze to start voice log analysis. After the analysis, the
fault information is displayed.
Figure 7-1 Voice Log Analysis tab page (BSC6900 LMT)

Method 2: Manually analyzing the voice log

Each time a BSC or BTS detects one-way audio, the BSC adds a record in the voice log, which
is saved in the \\mbsc\bam\common\fam\famlogfmt directory. The voice log has a preamble
of [CDIG] and can be opened in an EXCEL file by performing the following steps:
1.

Open the voice log using EXCEL. In this step, set Files of type to All Files.

2.

In the displayed Text Import Wizard Step 1 of 3 window, select Delimited from the
Original data type area, and click Next, as shown in Figure 7-2.

Figure 7-2 Opening the voice log (1)

3.

In the displayed Text Import Wizard Step 2 of 3 window, select Comma from the
Delimiters area, as shown in Figure 7-3. In this manner, log information is separated based
on the field type.
Figure 7-3 Opening the voice log (2)

4.

Filter the records in the voice log by using the SubType field. Select
SubType:TDM_L2 for TDM transmission and SubType:IP_MUTE for IP transmission.

5.

All resource information is recorded in the voice log each time one-way audio is detected.
Therefore, if a node is faulty, it will be recorded in many logs.
