3 Crosstalk Detection
Crosstalk Detection
3.1 Overview
Users are likely to complain if crosstalk frequently occurs on the network. Identifying the source
of a crosstalk problem is difficult if the information related to the crosstalk is not recorded. To
solve this problem, the Crosstalk Detection feature has been introduced to log the information
about the call affected by crosstalk and to provide an alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk.
With the Crosstalk Detection feature, the BSC automatically traces the call and checks whether
crosstalk occurs during the call. If crosstalk occurs, the information about the call, including the
serving cell, occupied channel, and serving TRX, is recorded. Such information helps
maintenance engineers identify a problem without reproducing the problem.
With the alarm mechanism specific to crosstalk, the BSC periodically records the number of
times crosstalk occurs. When this number exceeds a predefined threshold, the BSC reports an
alarm. This helps engineers to identify network quality problems and solve these problems before
users have an opportunity to notice. Crosstalk Detection applies only to the following speech
coding schemes: full rate (FR), enhanced full rate (EFR), adaptive multirate full rate (AMR_FR)
(excluding 12.2 kbit/s), and adaptive multirate half rate (AMR_HR) (excluding 6.7 kbit/s and
7.4 kbit/s).
This feature is implemented by the BSC, in collaboration with the transcoder (TC) and the BTS.
Therefore, only the crosstalk caused by BSS internal faults can be detected. Any crosstalk caused
by Um-interface or MSC faults cannot be detected by using this feature.
Crosstalk Detection has the following benefits:
l
Identifies speech quality problems as soon as possible according to alarm information. This
improves network quality.
Enables the BSC to log the information about the call affected by crosstalk, facilitating
problem location. This improves maintenance efficiency.

3 Crosstalk Detection
Information about the desired speech signals and undesired speech signals
Crosstalk-related alarms
Information About the Desired Speech Signals and About the Undesired Speech
Signals
Upon detecting crosstalk, the BTS or TC sends a crosstalk detection report message to the BSC.
The BSC receives the message and logs the information about the aforementioned resources
occupied by the call.
The BSC records the call IDs of the desired speech signals and the undesired speech signals.
Based on the call ID of the undesired speech signals, the BSC obtains information about the
undesired call and records the information in the log. The information about the undesired call
includes the serving TRX, occupied channel, crosstalk detection type, crosstalk occurrence time,
and call index.
GSM BSS
Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description
3 Crosstalk Detection
Frequent reporting of the BTS network connection information may result in Abis interface
congestion. The BSC and BTS must use a flow control strategy to prevent this problem. The
GetBtsNetTblTimeThd(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter specifies the interval at which the BTS
network connection information is reported. Within this interval, the BSC sends the BTS three
different messages to obtain the information about the following BTS network connections:
TMU upper-layer network connection, SCP upper-layer network connection, and DSP upperlayer network connection.
The information element (IE) "ucChanno" has been added to the messages between the BSC
and BTS to synchronize the crosstalk information recorded in the log and the actual crosstalk
information. The BSC sends a message with the "ucChanno" IE to the BTS and then receives a
response from the BTS and saves the value of the "ucChanno" IE contained in the response to
the log. In addition, the BSC saves the BTS network connection information to the OMU board
in binary. The current information about the BTS network connection can be sent to the BSC in
the form of a single frame or a multi-frame. When the information is sent to the BSC through a
multi-frame, the BSC buffers the multi-frame, compresses it after receiving the entire message,
and saves it to the OMU board in binary.
Crosstalk-related Alarms
The BSC measures the number of times crosstalk occurs on the BSC every 60 minutes.
If the number of times crosstalk occurs in 60 minutes is greater than the value of the
SPEECHCHANALARMTHRES(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, the BSC reports a BSS
Internal Voice Channel Abnormal alarm. In the alarm, the "Voice Abnormal Type" is crosstalk
and the number of times the voice is abnormal is the number of times crosstalk occurs. If the
number of times crosstalk occurs in the next 60 minutes is less than or equal to the value of the
SPEECHCHANRESUMEALARMTHRES(BSC6900,BSC6910) parameter, the BSC clears
the BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal alarm. In this case, the alarm information includes
the actual number of times crosstalk occurs. Note that the BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal
alarm cannot be reported repeatedly.

Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description
4.1 Overview
One-way audio and no audio are the two most common speech problems that customers complain
about. Identifying a one-way audio or no audio problem, however, is difficult if the necessary
information is not recorded in a timely manner. The One-Way Audio Detection feature enables
the BSC to log the one-way audio information and report an alarm, which facilitates problem
identification and location.
With this feature, the BSC and BTS automatically analyze speech information to check for oneway audio. Upon detecting one-way audio, the BSC logs related information, such as cell ID,
serving TRX, channel, port/slot/subrack number of the interface board on the BSC, and the
subrack/slot/path number of the DSP processing the call. This helps operation and maintenance
(OM) personnel obtain accurate data without simulating the problem.
This feature allows the BSC to periodically check the number of one-way audio records. If the
number exceeds the preset threshold, the BSC reports an alarm. If the number of one-way audio
records is less than the preset threshold, the BSC clears the alarm. This alarm mechanism helps
OM personnel identify one-way audio in advance, minimizing customer complaints.
This feature requires that the BSC and BTS cooperate. Therefore, this feature can detect oneway audio caused by BSS internal faults. In addition, this feature enables the BSC to detect oneway audio caused by MSC faults in A over IP mode. However, in A over TDM mode, the
BSC6900 has to be assisted by the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function to detect
one-way audio caused by MSC faults.
The One-Way Audio Detection feature has the following benefits:
l
Quickly locates speech quality problems on the network based on alarm information,
improving the network quality.
Enabling one-way audio detection has a minor impact on the overall performance of the BSC
and the BTS.

A interface CIC one-way audio detection: In A over TDM mode, the BSC needs to be
assisted by the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function to detect one-way audio.
The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function is controlled by CicDMuteSwitch.
This function works as follows: In the period specified by CicDMutePeriod, if the
proportion of the number of CICs experiencing one-way audio on a port to the total number

GSM BSS
Voice Fault Diagnosis Feature Parameter Description
of available CICs on the port is greater than the value of CicDMuteThre and the one-way
audio persists longer than a duration specified by CicDMuteTime, ALM-21590 CIC
Downlink One-Way Mute Alarm is reported.
NOTE
After the A interface CIC one-way audio detection function is enabled, a DSP in the TCS compares
two consecutive sampled values. If the number of times the sampled values are different is larger
than the value of CicDMuteDifCnt, the DSP determines that no one-way audio occurs for the ongoing
call. Otherwise, it determines that one-way audio occurs for the ongoing call.
To sum up, different one-way audio detection functions are used when the GBSS works in the
following four transmission modes:
l
Abis over TDM and A over TDM: The class-2 one-way audio detection function works
over the Abis interface. The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function works.
Abis over TDM and A over IP: The class-2 one-way audio detection function works over
the Abis interface, and the IP-based one-way audio detection function works over the A
interface.
Abis over IP and A over TDM: The IP-based one-way audio detection function works over
the Abis interface. The A interface CIC one-way audio detection function works.
Abis over IP and A over IP: The IP-based one-way audio detection function works over
both the Abis and A interfaces.

l If the proportion of bad frames to all speech frames exceeds the threshold specified by Exceptional Frame
Threshold of Mute Detect Class1 within the period specified by Period of Mute Detect Class1, class-2
one-way audio detection starts.
l During class-2 one-way audio detection:
If no test speech frames are received within the period specified by Period of Mute Detect Class2, the BSC
determines that there was one-way audio and logs a one-way audio problem.
If test speech frames are received within the period specified by Period of Mute Detect Class2, the BSC
determines that there was no one-way audio.
l Within the period specified by One-Way Mute Alarm Reporting Period:
If the number of one-way audio occurrences exceeds the threshold specified by Speech Channel Alarm
Threshold, the BSC reports ALM-21814 BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal.
If the number of one-way audio occurrences is less than the threshold specified by Speech Channel Alarm
Clearance Threshold, the BSC clears ALM-21814 BSS Internal Voice Channel Abnormal.
l If Force HO Upon Speech Problem is set to ON(On) and an MS is experiencing class-2 one-way audio,
the BSC forcibly hands over the MS to isolate the speech faults.
