SAVING ENERGY PART OF CULTURE AT
HAND MOTORS.
The double E approach – economic and environmental – makes Hand Motors
of Manchester Center a recognized leader in energy efficiency innovation in the
automobile industry. Founded in 1972 by brothers Jim and John Hand, the
dealership and service center located at Malfunction Junction has championed
the use of renewable energy technology to realize a better bottom line and
lighten its impact on the environment.
Awarded the Dealer Innovation Award by USA Today and the National Auto-
mobile Dealerships Association, Hand Motors was recognized for its “innova-
tive efficiency practices that positively impact their business, employees and
community.”
For the past two decades, the original building that now houses the showroom
and body shop has been heated with waste motor oil. When the new service
building was constructed in spring of 2005, company president Jim Hand wanted
the 16,000-square-foot building to employ the most efficient energy technolo-
gies.
Two furnaces were outfitted to heat the reception, parts and service areas with
used vegetable and waste oil. Each week, Hand collects the vegetable oil from
local restaurants. Together with 7,000 gallons of used motor oil, the building is
kept warm throughout the year.
Propane is available to supply air conditioning in summer. The lighting in the
old and new buildings was redesigned, resulting in better and faster illumina-
tion and a monthly savings of $1,100 in electric charges. “It just made economic
sense,” said Hand.
Energy efficiency became a family interest when Hand’s sons, Thomas and
Jamie, were environmental science majors at Middlebury College. For his senior
thesis, Thomas Hand proposed a project replacing ordinary incandescent bulbs
with more efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
Starting locally with the help of his father, his uncle Jim Hand and others in the
community, they mobilized a campaign and replaced 43,000 bulbs in the greater
Manchester area. The fluorescent bulbs use one-third of the electricity and last
10 times longer. Efficiency Vermont touts the project as the largest program in
the state.
“In our market-based economy in the United States, the price of our fossil fuels
determines the consumer’s awareness of the energy issues we face,” said Hand.
“We have not changed mindsets to understand the long-term implications of
continued dependence on fossil fuels.
“Climate changes; the additional need for air conditioning when 20 years ago
buildings were constructed without cooling systems; and the increased de-
mand for snowmaking are recent pressures on our power system. Until we pay
the right price at the pump for the entire cost of the fuel, we will fail to under-
stand the impact our current habits are having on the environment,” he said.
“Renewable energy is competitive when the true price is understood.” Blair
Hamilton and his colleagues at Efficiency Vermont developed the southern
loop strategy to satisfy the region’s future energy needs. Due to the scarcity of
lines and hurdles to build new lines within existing permits in the area, Effi-
ciency Vermont has set out to reduce the electric load on constrained transmis-
sion and distribution systems.
Hand Motors has accomplished a 31-percent reduction in kilowatts with its
current energy saving practices in keeping with Efficiency Vermont’s goals.
When Casella Waste Management offered single-stream recycling, Hand Mo-
tors joined the program, recycling light metals, plastics, chipboard and paper
into an on-site container. When a container is pulled, the cost is $70, far less
than the cost of dumping it at a landfill. Materials are sorted at the Casella
facility and turned into recyclable products.
Customers are asked to consider the option of recycling their used tires. “Tires
contain significant amounts of oil,” said Hand. “Vermont Tire Recycling picks
up the tires, turning our old wheels into rubberized road asphalt, playground
mats, tire retreads and barn mats and bedding.”
Future energy-saving projects include adding foam insulation to the interior
walls of the old building, which will more than pay back the costs and installa-
tion of solar panels for hot water and electrical needs. The hot water solar
panels will repay the initial investment in two-and-a-half years, said Hand. The
solar panels may provide a 10-percent to 11-percent return. Programs such as
these may earn federal and state tax credits of 30 percent each.
“Customers and our employees applaud our energy saving initiatives,” said
Hand. “We must continually work to change habits for long-term results, mak-
ing us better and smarter consumers.”. Article by Tricia N. Hayes, courtesy of

WAS IT SUICIDE?
Police are investigating what might be a case of suicide and arson after a fire destroyed a home on
State Line Drive.
Hans J. Schiermeyer, 53, of Pownal, was found Wednesday at his home dead from what ap-
peared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to a press release from the Vermont State
Police. Schiermeyer's body was found by firefighters who had been dispatched to a fire at
Schiermeyer's home around 9:30 p.m. When firefighters reached the house, it was already fully
engulfed in flames and Schiermeyer was dead.
Police found a firearm at the scene and no one else was believed to be at the home. According to
police, Schiermeyer's wife had reported shortly before the fire that she had spoken to Schiermeyer
by telephone and he had threatened to set their house on fire and kill himself in the process.
Schiermeyer's wife, who was returning from a trip outside of the United States, had contacted
the state police to ask for a trooper who could escort her to the house. The house, which is at the
end of a remote unpaved road just before the Massachusetts border, was completely destroyed
by the fire, according to police. The Vermont State Police and the Office of the Chief Medical
Examiner are conducting a joint investigation into Schiermeyer's death. An autopsy was sched-
uled for Thursday, but calls to Lt. Reg Trayah, commander of the Shaftsbury barracks of the
Vermont State Police, and Detective Sgt. Robert Patten, were not returned on Thursday. Pownal
Fire Department Chief Murray Lewis could not be reached on Thursday. Body of article from
Rutland Herald. June 4 2010.
