The 2015-2016 Provincial Achievement Tests and

Diploma Examination results are out for Alberta,
and students from the Golden Hills School Division are performing well and continue to improve
in many ways.
Bevan Daverne, superintendent of the Golden
Hills School Division, commented on the results stating, Were happy with the continued improvement
we have. Were really happy to see our students
are continuing to do well and continue to improve,
and were very proud of the work our teachers have
done as well in working with kids.
We are feeling good about the results that we
have back, said Daverne.
DIPLOMA EXAMINATIONS
The school division saw increases in the number
of students achieving Acceptable Standard over the
previous year in eight of the nine diploma courses.
Also, a higher number of students achieved the
Standard of Excellence in five of the nine diploma
courses compared to last year.
Students surpassed the Provincial Standard of
Excellence benchmark in five of the nine diploma
courses including English 30-1, Biology 30, Chemistry 30, Physics 30, and Math 30-1.
PROVINCIAL ACHIEVEMENT TESTS
Grade 6 and Grade 9 students across Alberta
took the provincial achievement tests. According
to Alberta Education, these tests are administered
to determine if students are learning what they are
expected to learn, report how well students have
achieved provincial standards, and assist schools
and the province in monitoring and improving student learning.
Not everyone agrees on whether conducting provincial achievement tests is a truly reflective measure of education.
However, according to the Calgary Board of Education, Provincial tests are one part of a balanced,
broad-based program of student assessment. When
analyzed along with many other indicators of student learning, provincial tests provide information
to guide our educators as they set targets for student achievement and track the results of school
improvement initiatives.
In the Golden Hills School Division, the percentage of students in Grade 6 and Grade 9 that
achieved Acceptable Standard improved over the
previous year in five out of the eight test areas or
subjects.

Australian researchers are focussing on a vaccine

Clinical trials on humans have already begun.
In a 2015 study of the most-prescribed drugs
in Canada, a thyroid medication topped the list
again. In second place was methadone, a drug to
treat addiction to opioid drugs. Others in the top
ten include a stomach acid-reducing drug, a couple
of cholesterol-lowering drugs and blood pressurelowering drugs and of course the blood thinner,
warfarin.
In this column we have always stressed the
importance of taking your medication as ordered
by your doctor. Many hospital admissions are the

Gordon Dirks: Rosebuds new interim

executive director
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Gordon Dirks, who was Education
Minister in Jim Prentices government,
and previously board chair of the Calgary Board of Education, is now Interim Executive Director of Rosebud Centre of the Arts.
Dirks relationship with Rosebud began in the early 1990s, he said, when
he and his wife started coming to see
Rosebud shows. In 1996, he became
president of Rocky Mountain College and began
bringing busloads of students to Rosebud productions. In 2015, Dirks joined
Rosebud Centre of the Arts
(RCAs) board of directors,
and this September, when
Executive Director Adam
Furfaro left, Dirks stepped
down from the board and
became Interim Executive
Director.
Its been a wonderful
journey, Dirks said. Were
absolutely delighted to be
friends and fans and supporters of
Rosebud and now engaged with Rosebud in this rather interesting interim
period as Interim Acting Executive Director.
Dirks brings experience in senior
leadership in government, church, and
education, and in development, and
public and donor relations. Hes also
served and consulted to numerous
boards, and taught effective board governance. All of that, he trusts, will be
beneficial to RCA.
Ive always seen my role as a senior
leader in an organization as one of empowering the staff that I work with,
in whatever way I can, to help them
be successful in their roles, he said,

Mark Wahlberg,
Dylan OBrien,
Kurt Russell,
Kate Hudson,
John Malkovich,
Gina Rodriguez

and to feel not only that theyve made

a contribution of substance to the organization, but theyve also developed
personally and professionally as individuals, and that they feel good about
their role.
Ive got to say that Im very, very,
very impressed -- and I would underscore that -- very impressed with the
quality of the people at Rosebud, the
passion that they exude, the competence that they demonstrate day in and
day out, he said.
You see that ultimately
reflected in the quality of
the service that Rosebud
provides, both in terms of
its drama, theatre productions, in terms of its hospitality experience, in terms
of the students that it graduates from its programs,
and in terms of the number of patrons who keep
coming back, in the tens of
thousands, every year.
Also, he said, We (in
Rosebud) rely significantly
on donors and friends of
Rosebud to sustain our Rosebud Experience. I want to ensure that we have
a good development program that is
both sustained and enhanced as we go
forward, that we have a board thats
functioning effectively, and I want
to do whatever I
can to support the
board in that.
As the board

continues its search for a new Executive Director, Dirks said, We want to
find the best person that we can, to
lead Rosebud into the future.
He invites anyone interested in the
role, or who knows someone whos interested, to contact RCA.
Rosebud is a most unique cultural
institution in all of Canada, Dirks said,
and invited us all to enjoy the Rosebud
Experience this season. Miracle on
34th Street opens in the Opera House
Nov. 11, with school shows, matinees
and evening performances. Frank Dickens Christmas Carol opens in the BMO
Studio Stage, Nov. 26.
Also, Dirks said, we are a donationbased organization and we look for and
deeply appreciate the donation gifts of
people to sustain Rosebud. As people
think about their charitable giving for
the remainder of 2016, if they would
look our way and
consider supporting Rosebud, we
would deeply appreciate that.

Learning Halloween monster makeup

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

The Strathmore Municipal Library
will be hosting a Halloween monster
makeup class on Oct. 25 just in time
to help Strathmore area residents learn
how to create spooky makeup Halloween faces for the popular holiday.
The idea is to show people how to
create mummies, wounds, scary scales
and other creepy things through the
use of makeup.
You dont have to spend tons of
money on really expensive makeup
in order to create some of these great
monster looks, said Carmen Erison,
assistant director of library services for
the Strathmore Municipal Library.
The library hosted the first Halloween monster makeup class two years
ago with no other intentions to host
another class; however, Erison said the
original class was a huge success.
But recently, a past patron from the
previous class, contacted Erison to inquire if the library would be hosting
the class again and Erison was interested.
I thought lets see if I can find
somebody to do it, she said. It was

quite successful the last time we did it

and I think what they say for children
is that makeup is better than masks
because it doesnt obscure their sight.
So its great to put makeup on versus
having a mask and so were going to
teach you how to do those wonderful
makeup looks.
Erison clarified that she has often
heard on the local news that makeup
is better than masks as it does not obscure a childs vision the way a mask
does.
Erison placed a post on Facebook
looking for a makeup artist and found
someone to teach the upcoming class.
This teacher has a vast amount of experience doing all sorts of creepy faces
and body art, makeup and glitter tattoos and a variety of other things.
Shes quite excited about this, said
Erison.
The class will be teaching people
how to do three to four different cool
Halloween faces on a budget.
At a cost of $10 per person, registrants will receive a tutorial on how to
create these wonderful, creepy looks
and will also be able to take home a
makeup palette to help create the designs.

Participants will be able to bring a

friend on which to practice creating
these looks or may opt to create the
looks on themselves with help from
a mirror.
There is a limit of 20 registrations and each person that is
registered is allowed to bring
a makeup model to practice
on.
So essentially well have 40
people in the room but its only
20 registrations, said Erison.
Registration is now open and
will be taken up to the
day of the event on
Oct. 25. However,
spots may fill
up prior to this
date and the
library
will
be posting
about this
on Facebook.

Golden Hills happy with improvement

Continued from Page 1

In addition, Grade 6 math, Grade 9
English Language Arts and Grade 9 Science all showed strong standings by
scoring above the provincial average in
the number of students achieving acceptable standard.
The percentage of students that
achieved the Standard of Excellence improved in three out of the eight tests,
and seven subjects including Grade 6
Language Arts, Science, Social, Grade
9 Language Arts, Science and Social all
exceeded the provincial Standard of Excellence.
Daverne stated, Theres always a little
bit of variation from school to school,
in results and the school division has
not had a chance yet to pull out all the
specific detailed information.
However, each school has their own
release and principals from each school
will communicate specific school results
to those in attendance during upcoming
school council meetings. In addition,
each school will report results in the
Annual Educational Plan and Results
Report. The reports will be available on
school websites by Nov. 30.
FOCUS
According to Daverne, the school
board focuses on a few key things.
First, the school division focuses on
really having kids be a part of their
learning, and finds it important that students understand why theyre learning,
what theyre learning and specifically

what the goals for their learning are.

These goals may be varied and include goals for a class, a unit or for the
day.
The more that they are plugged in to
what it is theyre learning, what theyre
supposed to learn and why thats part
of their learning, we find the better that
they do, said Daverne.
The second thing that the division
focuses on is that kids are engaged in
their learning and that learning is motivational.
The third division focus is providing
an atmosphere where teachers are able
to collaborate with one another to improve the learning of students.
Bevan said that the school curriculum
has been developed over the years with
school divisions and teachers working
in concert together.
Everybodys working together and
as a result, when you look at the end
game, we have very good results, he
said.
The Golden Hills School Divisions
board of directors publicly commented
on these latest test results and stated,
We are all very pleased to see the continuous growth of our students achievement level. The Board is grateful for all
the hard work teachers, support staff
and parents have done to help support
students.
The Golden Hill School Division has
15 regular public schools, two alternative Christian program schools, two virtual schools, three outreach schools and
18 Hutterite schools.

Halloween, bah humbug!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Hopefully, with this column, I wont lose any of
my 23 readers. However, I really feel honesty is
very important.
Oh sure, youre probably thinking! Hes a politician and is talking about honesty!
Actually, to me, politician is a four letter word,
and Ive tried so hard to not go to that dark side!
And, yes, Im aware that politician has more
than four letters even if I dont teach math!
Believe it or not, there is a point to this column.
You see, Im one of those scrooges (as Ive
been called) who hates Halloween. How it became
a 6 billion dollar commercial holiday is beyond
me. I hate everything about it: the decorations,
now the lighting youre supposed to have, dressing up in uncomfortable costumes to be stared at,
and most of all, giving candy out to kids I may not
even know! And, dont get me started on what I
think about anyone over the age of 13, whos going door to door with a few black marker lines on
his face, with a parka, and a pillow case to snag
free stuff!
To me, if youre in Grade 9 and trick or treating,
you should be collecting either food for the food
bank, or money for a charity! Whew sorry for
ranting, but I dont get how this night morphed
into what it is now.
History Lesson with Pat Fule: Around 1000 AD,
All Hallows Eve became a day to honour the dead.
The Church wanted to replace the Celtic festival
of the dead with a church sanctioned holiday.
Hundreds of years later, it began to change. People
were always worried about harsh winters, less day
light, and were especially afraid of spirits coming
back to the earthly world. In fact, when they left
their houses at this time, they would often wear
masks, so any ghosts might mistake them as fellow spirits, and leave them alone. Or go after
Henry or Joseph, who forgot their masks!
Even back then, guys were jerks to each other!
Imagine you being the only guy without a mask,
and Henry and Joseph are both pointing at you!
People also left out bowls of food to appease
the ghosts so they wouldnt try and enter their
homes. Between 1920 and 1950, Halloween again
began to change. Trick or Treating took off and
kids began their house visits in search of free
treats, and the communities felt it was a great way
to bring everyone together.
The idea became: if you were a good neighbor, and gave out treats, then those cute, little

neighborhood scamps wouldnt trick you! To me,

it sounds like extortion! Give me candy, or Ill play
a trick on you or your house?!
Why not just kidnap my dog, and hold it for ransom, so you can get your O Henry bar? Oh, and
God help me, if I give out something that the little
ghoul may not like! I do like to harass older teens
who come to my house!
I have been known to say things like: Hey, what
are, you 30? Why arent you doing something constructive? You know, 70 years ago, some guys lied
about their age to fight in WWII, and here you are,
hiding your age, so you can get candy!
And, yes, dont worry they get their candy,
but it comes with a price!
Leaving out food bowls to keep ghosts out, reminds me of a creepy Halloween almost 30 years
ago. Deb and I were living in our first home in
the Maplewood area, and the doorbell rang, on
a busy Halloween Night. In walked a person (we
never really knew the gender!) with a large overcoat, gloves, and a full mask. This guest made
itself home, and sat at our kitchen table for quite
a while.
At first it was funny, laughing, and trying to
guess the mystery person. As the minutes went
on though, it began to creep us out. This person
wasnt going to unmask, and was just sitting there.
I finally said, look, jokes over, either unmask, and
well all have a laugh, leave, or I call the RCMP.
The person casually stood up, and sauntered
out the front door. That was it I locked the
door, shut off all our lights, and that was it for
Halloween 1987!
We did decide a long time ago, to help out the
poor people who have to shuffle along with the
little ones on frigid Halloween Nights. We actually
give out little shots of refreshing beverages to
help them on their way! Our next door neighbor
figured it out quickly. Hed bring one son over
get a shot. Hed go home and bring over the other
little ghoul, get another shot. Then, when the kids
petered out, hed stop by for a final one! Now that
made Halloween more fun for a Grinch who
doesnt like it! I mean, when you give a shot, you
cant be rude, and have your guest drink alone?!

Times CLARIFICATION
In reference to Oct. 14 issue, regarding the update on the regional water partnership,
please note this correction and clarification:
1. The fund received from Alberta Transportation is under the Water for Life program and a partial
payment where the government is contributing approximately 90 per cent of the project value and the
partners (municipalities) are contributing with the remaining 10 per cent. All the funds received will be
used against the phase one construction project.
2. Wheatland County had contributed approximately $1,8 million for the phase one construction.
3. The next technical meeting is scheduled for Oct. 21 and not Oct. 11.
4. The Wheatland County had contributed $672 thousand for the purchase of existing plant and pipe right
of way from the village of Standard and $72 thousand to start operation of the plant once
transferred to the corporation.
5. The use of spring water at the village of Standard is part of the raw water supply at the water treatment
plant and it will continue to be so. Theres no plan to abandon the spring water system.
The corporation is established to secure safe and sufficient water to the partners in this region and the
ultimate goal is to provide this service to as many residents as possible.

Thought for
the Week
~

Wealth is a
blessing only
if we use it in
the way God
intended it.

Pursuing her dreams!

PAT FULE
Times Contributor

This week I was able to ask a few questions of
a local young lady, whos starting to make a name
for herself in music.
Jordan Ostrom goes by the stage name of
Sykamore and has been writing, recording,
and performing throughout Canada. Recently,
she travelled to Nashville where she again, wrote
and recorded music. She has released albums on
YouTube, and recently had success with a single
called Houseboat.
1. How, and at what age, did you discover you
had a talent for music and song writing?
The first time I sang in public I was about four,
and I think that was sort of a fluke that led to
me realizing I actually liked singing and it came
somewhat easily to me. So after that my mom put
me in singing lessons and I started getting opportunities here and there, but I didnt start writing
music until I was probably in high school - but I
always enjoyed poetry and creative writing so I
think I had flexed those muscles a bit before getting into writing songs.
2. Explain the situation when you decided to really pursue a career in music?
I cant remember a specific day or moment, but
I do remember wanting to pursue it for a long
time before I even told anyone. Music wasnt really part of my identity when I was a teenager (I
sort of put it on hold for a few years out of insecurity) so I think it was a little bit embarrassing,
the thought of coming out and making big proclamations about trying to make it in music. I was
so sure it was this impossible thing to achieve,
so I tried to put it out of my mind ... but it was
always there. I started a little duo with my friend
in college and I think it was around that time that
I started to think, maybe I can do this. And shortly after that I think I started telling people that
was my goal in life. Ultimately I have my college
friends to thank, for being so encouraging and
allowing me to be creative and figure out what I
wanted without fear of judgment.
3. How did you decide upon the stage name
Sykamore? Has it helped you retain some anonymity?
The need for a stage name basically came
when I decided my real name wasnt memorable
enough for the music industry. So I started thinking, if I were to have a stage name, it should be
reflective of my music and my brand. So then I
started throwing out adjectives that characterize
my brand and they were things like real, organic,
strong, tenacious, rootsy ... and it just sounded
so much like a tree I was talking about. So I
picked the sycamore tree, and changed the C to a

K for some signature. I think most people know

my real name anyways, I havent tried to legally
change my name or anything, so I doubt it gives
me much anonymity, but the name itself is just
weird enough that people remember it, and its
proved to be pretty valuable and caused me to
meet some really powerful people in the industry.
4. You had a song called Houseboat that generated a lot of buzz tell us about it, and how
it came to be? Where can our readers buy it, and
other songs of yours?
Houseboat is a song I wrote a few years ago,
and so it was really great to finally put it out after
hesitating for a while. Its a summer jam about
a bad break up, and then healing from it by going out on a boat with your friends and just letting it go. If youd like to buy it, its available on
iTunes and you can request it on your local country station as well. All of my material is on iTunes
though, if youd like to purchase it.
5. What projects do you have coming up, and
are you recording new material now?
Well right now I am in the thick of a contest
known as Project Wild, which is a province-wide
artist development program for country performers. 12 finalists are chosen out of hundreds, and
then we are put through a series of challenges
that we are judged on in order to determine the
Top 3 artists out of the bunch, and those three
will win $100,000, $75,000, and $50,000. Lately
Ive been pretty preoccupied with the challenges,
along with a hefty business proposal you have
to create for the contest. But I am recording new
material now, I am in the process of releasing a
small EP due to release later this year.
6. You have a strong humanitarian side to you,
please tell us the upcoming project you have?
One of the challenges I have to complete for
Project Wild is to throw a charity event, which is
coming up on Oct. 20 at the Discovery Theatre
at First Alliance Church in Calgary - I am playing an acoustic concert and my mom is selling
her homemade pies! All the proceeds are going
towards The Exchange Churchs trip to Haiti next
year, where they will be helping to build a school
and provide relief in the wake of Hurricane Matthew. It is $20 at the door, and you can also purchase homemade pies. It should be a great evening! It all kicks off at 7p.m.
7. Besides this charity performance, where
could our readers see you perform live, and how
can they help support your career?
My adjudicated Project Wild showcase is being
held at Knoxvilles Tavern on Oct. 27, starting at 9
p.m. The more people we have out the better! So
bring a friend and come watch my set as well as
my talented cohorts Trevor Panczak and Midnight
Lights.

Olympian Akeem Haynes delivers inspiration in Strathmore

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

Olympian Akeem Haynes visited
some schools in Strathmore on Oct. 13
to share his personal Olympic journey
with Strathmore students. His message
was nothing short of inspirational and
served as a reminder that all people can
chase their dreams.
Haynes helped Canada break a
20-year-old national record to win
bronze in the 4x100m mens relay at the
2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil.
He also placed 26th in the 100m event.
The Olympian was born in Calgary,
and he and his mother Carlene Samuels
moved to Yellowknife when he was seven years old before settling back into
Calgary when he was 10.
The energy in the gymnasium at
Wheatland Elementary was vibrating as
Haynes walked in to a warm, welcoming and energetic crowd.
In a personal interview with the
Strathmore Times, Haynes explained
that he wants to show kids that they are
the future and that dreams are possible.
We have to let them know that its
(dreams) possible and I think thats always been my biggest thing is letting
them know that it is possible, he said.
Wheatland Elementary School principal Amy Van Vliet started off the event
by publicly speaking directly to Haynes
in front of the large crowd.
We felt like you were a perfect role
model and your journey would show
the students some of those important
things that we teach here at Wheatland, she said. Here at Wheatland, we
have our school motto and our school
motto is lead, learn and love.
During his speech at Wheatland Elementary, Haynes said that being successful is a state of mind.
He said that if you tell yourself that
you can be successful and achieve all
things up in your own brain where it
truly matters, anything that you want is
possible.
If you believe you can do it, theres
nothing that can stop you, he said.
In speaking to the crowd, Haynes said
that he considered himself very fortunate to have come away with a medal
from Rio.
He talked a lot to students about having and pursuing dreams.

When I started sports, my biggest

thing was to always follow the thing
that I knew that I wanted to be, said
Haynes. I knew at an early age that I
had a dream.
But perhaps the thing that might
set Haynes apart is his methodical approach in following his dreams and believing in his own focus in spite of what
others might say.
I always write down my dreams on
a piece of paper and at night I read it
and I read it a couple of times so I fall
asleep thinking about that dream, and
then when I wake up, I look at that paper again and all the stuff that I wrote
down and I start my day and I go and
chase my dreams, he said.
The Olympian revealed that he has
had as many as 50 different dreams
written down at one time because he
dreams all the time.
At the young age of 24 years old,
Haynes has achieved something truly
impressive through his own inner calling.
Ive never had people when I was
younger tell me that I could do something I was always hearing what
Akeem couldnt do and all these negative things and I think for me the best
thing that I did was not pay attention to
what they were saying, he said.
He also revealed a well thought out
approach to following his dreams. First,
he said it is necessary to decide if a
dream is possible.
However, he also stated that he believes that anything that is a dream is
possible and there is nothing that you
cannot do.
You have to believe in yourself and
you have to believe that no matter what
comes in your way, you will find a way
to work around the road blocks and the
walls that come in front of you and you
will go after and chase your dreams,
he said.
Haynes said that the second thing that
you have to do is protect your dream.
Theres going to be a lot of times
where it might not seem possible, said
Haynes. People might try to tell you
that you cant do that. A lot of people
told me what I cannot do but what they
do not understand is that you guys have
the power to achieve your dreams.
Haynes third and final point was to
never put limits on yourself.

Olympian Akeem Haynes joined Wheatland Elementary School along with principal Amy Van Vliet
on Oct. 13 to share his inspirational Olympic journey. Haynes helped Canada break a 20-year-old
national record to win bronze in the 4x100m mens relay at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil.

Melissa Strle Photo

He told a story of two boys in which

one saved his friend after falling
through some ice on a lake in the winter. He pointed to the heroic efforts being possible in that given situation since
there was no one there telling the boy
that he couldnt or wasnt able to save
his friend.
Haynes message was that there may
be a lot of the times where you may
doubt yourself, make mistakes or might
not feel as confident but thats ok.
In order to be successful in life as a
whole, you have to be willing to try and
when you fall, you have to be willing
to try again and when you fall again,
you have to be willing to get up and
try again because I guarantee if you

can find a way to get up each and every time, you will be successful, said
Haynes.
At the end of the Olympians speech,
Van Vliet lead the school through a
school-wide dance and music to show
their appreciation to Haynes for coming
to talk that day.
I thought we could give him a gift of
our energy and enthusiasm, said Van
Vliet.
Haynes attended Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas
before transferring to the University of
Alabama. He earned a degree in General Health at the university and has written a self-help book titled Love, Life and
Legacy about dealing with hardships.

Chamber looks to increase attendance

MELISSA STRLE
Times Reporter

The Chamber of Commerce recently
held its Lunch & Learn on Oct. 12 at
the Community Futures Boardroom in
Strathmore. The Lunch & Learn featured Ryan Tongs from World Financial Group and the topic discussed
was being an entrepreneur in todays
economy.
Chamber of Commerce Lunch &
Learn events are designated as educational-type events. This latest event
was attended by some, but there was
still ample room left for more attendees.
Terri Kinsman, President of the
Strathmore & District Chamber of
Commerce said, I know that Ryan was
pleased but he had hoped that there
would be more people there.
She revealed that she really does not
know what the issue is.
Kinsman said the event was well advertised and it was in the Strathmore
Times newspaper. She speculated that
some people may not be able to come
at lunchtime.
She also said that the chamber could
try a breakfast or after-work meeting.
Well try a couple different scenarios to see what works best for the community.
Kinsman said that the chamber will

continue to run Lunch & Learn events

but they havent been to this point well
attended. She said that the chamber is
currently in the process of conducting
a member survey to determine exactly
what would be useful for members.
We do have some ideas for 2017 for
future Lunch & Learn events and were
hoping to be able to do something that
is quite relevant for business today,
said Kinsman.
The Lunch & Learns are designated
as an educational-type event that may
help members to increase their bottom
line or deal with tax issues.
Kinsman said that there will be some
great sessions coming up next year related to tax changes for 2017 and information about bookkeeping. The plan
is to have sessions with a local expert
on hand (tax accountant), but wherever
possible, members will be utilized first
if they have expertise in those areas.
There have been four or five Lunch
& Learn events over the last couple of
years. Some have been well attended
and some have not.
Kinsman stated that the feedback the
chamber has received from members
has said that the material is relevant.
They (community area residents)
just are focused on something else or
dont have the time to attend, said
Kinsman.
Kinsman suggested that perhaps

moving the Lunch & Learn event to a

different time might work better for
some people.
Regardless, the chamber will be sending the survey out electronically to all
members and said, were hoping that
the members will take the time to answer the questions because that helps
us know really what the membership is

looking for, said Kinsman.

We want to do the best possible job
for the community and the businesses
in the community and our members,
she said. We have a lot of feedback so
we are kind of slogging through that
and trying to determine what the best
scenario is for Strathmore and what
will work best for the community.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT
A little respect and compassion go
a long way in supporting people.
There is nothing that makes me
prouder of our community than
when I see the way that people
reach out and show compassion
and support to one another,
especially in challenging times.
And there are many of those times
recently.
But I would like to address
one particular situation, with a
reminder to us all if you have
lost a loved one, I think you will
understand my point here. And I
have seen both sides of what I am
speaking of.
Recently on the way to the
graveyard in procession with
a grieving family, I noticed the
students at a local school that
we were driving past, stood, took
off their hats, and showed due
respect. And I was touched,
but after the service, hearing
the family speak, there were
tears of thanksgiving the kids
understood that someone in those
cars and trucks going by, and lost
a loved one, and they showed
respect in the way they could.
But on another such trip, trucks
and cars, even a semi, not wanting
to get caught in the traffic
rushed to, and in one situation,
cut off the lead vehicle, clearly

If you have never been there,
never ridden in that procession to
lay a loved on in their final resting

emotion of those moments. But
for those of us that have, I can tell

and gift.
May we remember that at one
time or another, we all will make
those processions, and the care of
people standing on the sidewalk,
stopped to let us carry on, the
bowed heads in respect, or the
simple prayer of compassion, make
more of a difference than we could
imagine.

Teens receive flight licences

SABRINA KOOISTRA
Times Jr Reporter

Home to the 903 Royal Canadian Air Cadet
Squadron, Strathmore boasts several recipients of
a power flight or gliding scholarship which gets
hopeful pilots off the ground.
The road to becoming a pilot as part of the
Air Cadets is a long and arduous process, but no
doubt is very rewarding.
Each prospective pilot, who is required to be at
least 16 years of age to apply for a gliding or power pilot scholarship, is obligated to successfully
complete Ground School, which is four months
in length.
Instructed by Captain Barry Duffield, candidates
must receive a passing mark on the fourth test of
a series of practice exams, attend 80 per cent of
events and meetings, after which they may write
an entrance exam.
The final mark of the examination, the cadets
school marks, their Cadet attendance, and their
success in an interview by a panel of three, comprised of a combination of military personnel and
Air Cadet League members, are all part of the process to ensure the cadet is a worthy beneficiary of
the scholarship.
If the potential pilots advance beyond this phase
they will be considered to receive a scholarship
to join other cadets from Alberta, Saskatchewan,
Manitoba, and Northwest Territories in Gimli,
Man. for glider training, or to one of three aviation
schools in the area to study powered flight. The
course is approximately two months in duration.
Joining this aviation industry are members of
Strathmores Cadet Squadron. Some of these pilots-in-training have dreamt of this opportunity
from a young age out of interest, and others have
made it their current career plan.
Alex Hering, an 18-year-old, now has his sights
set towards a commercial pilot licence after
achieving his private pilot licence this past sum-

mer with the assistance of a power flight scholarship. Clocking many hours in flight, he is currently
practicing for the Transport Canada exam, which
is the subsequent step to reaching a commercial
licence and instructors licence.
This was probably harder than school in a lot
of ways, but was also an achievable goal for me.
The best thing was probably that in the end, I
got the one thing that was my goal from when I
joined air cadets six years ago, he said.
With this scholarship comes many other obligations and alternate time restrictions. Pilots-intraining through this Cadets scholarship receive
eight to 16 per cent of the time allotted to flight
students outside of the scholarship, so consequently, anxiety is very common. Because of this,
there are several supports available to Cadets including summer programming, effective speaking,
fitness, and ceremonial courses, along with assistance from mentors, to ensure that all students are
successful in the program.
An additional option for prospective pilots is
the glider training program. It is a six week long
course involving both ground and in-flight training, preceded by entrance exams and interviews
like that of the power flight scholarship. For Sgt.
Rachel Gagne, a 16-year-old glider pilot from 903
Squadron in Strathmore, the gliding course was
far from simple.
Overall, I wasnt really the best candidate to
become a pilot I get overwhelmed fairly easily
[and] Im also very timid, and that is only made
worse when youre controlling a 1000 lb aircraft,
she said. But I think Im proof that if you want
it bad enough, you put 120 per cent into everything you do, and just keep smiling, you can get
through anything.
Chiefly, each student was able to test their resilience and prepare for their future with both aviation-related and universally-desired career skills,
while exiting the course essentially debt-free, with
a flight licence under their belts.

Spartans clinch playoff position

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
After missing out of postseason play last season, the
Strathmore High School Spartans punched their ticket
into the Rangeland Football Conference semifinals with
a 42-7 over the McCoy High School Colts Friday evening
(Oct. 14) at Strathmore High School Field.
The Spartans entered Fridays game in a three-way tie
for third place. The win solidified their playoff spot. It
is the second time in three years that head coach Travis
Gorski is playoff bound. His first trip was as the fourth
seed two years ago.
It felt good to clinch at home. Our guys worked extremely hard and we kept pushing every day. It was a
great effort, said Gorksi.
The Spartans senior quarterback Isaac Wegner took
over from the opening kickoff with a Mike Vick-like performance on the ground.
It was third down with three yards to go, Wegner rolled
out to the left like he so often does, scanned down the
field and nothing was open. He tucked the ball, broke a
few tackles and was gone 52 yards to the house.
In the second quarter, he rolled out to the left once
again and burned past a series of Colt defenders once he
reached the sideline. This time, it was an 86-yard touchdown scamper.
I always look to pass first, but Ill quickly tuck the ball
and run if Im not confident and I dont think anyone is
open, said Wegner, who finished with 157 rushing yards

while going 8-for-18 in the air with one passing touchdown.

In our past four games we had four slow starts, said
Gorski. The message was the same all week; have good,
up-tempo practices, play to your level and do your job.
Leading 14-0 in the second quarter, the Spartans iced
the game after the Colts botched back-to-back punts deep
in their own zone, giving the Spartans great field position.
The defensive line also played outstanding at stopping
the run. Fellow senior Garrett Gatto was the hammer on
the d-line, driving into the pocket and leading the charge
to shut down the ground game.
Up next for the Spartans in the semis is a rematch with
the Crescent Heights High School Vikings on Oct. 21 in
Medicine Hat.
The Spartans trailed 28-0 at half Oct. 6 against the Vikings, but played a much stronger second half, losing 4728.
This will be a nice revenge game for us, said Gorksi.
We have a few new plays and wrinkles we can throw
into the system that we have been saving for playoffs.
The Medicine Hat High School Mohawks finished as the
No. 1 seed and await the winner of the Brooks Buffalos
and Colts Oct. 18 game.
I think it is an advantage for us not seeing the No. 1
seed right away, said Wegner, who was a receiver during
the Spartans previous playoff run.
League finals are slated for Friday, Oct. 28. A semifinal
win by the Spartans boosts them into provincials, which
start Friday, Nov. 3.

The Strathmore Wheatland Kings are Back!

The Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks

have slipped up on the road this
season. They were just whacked
70-0 by the reigning 6 Man Football
provincial champs, the St. Josephs
Collegiate Crusaders in Brooks.
Brooks is undefeated this year
and their margins of victory have
been by over 70 points, said Hawks
head coach Michael Annicchiarico.
They are also very experienced
with a lot of Grade 12 players. We
thought that our Grade 9 and 10s
stepped up and didnt quit.
The Hawks return home for a pair
of home games as they make a final
push towards the playoffs during
their inaugural season.
The Hawks (1-4) host Our Lady of
Mount Pleasant Royals on Oct. 21 at
HCC Field, and it will go a long way
in determining the Hawks playoff
chances.
The first round of playoffs starts
Saturday, Nov. 12. The top eight
teams from the Northern and Southern conference make the A playoffs and next four teams qualify for
the B playoffs.
The Hawks sit tied for sixth with
the Royals. While the A playoffs
might be out of the question, the
Hawks are focused on reaching the
B playoffs.
The Hawks were also clipped 8819 by the Central High Sedgewick
Rams Oct. 7 in Sedgewick.
It was a disappointing game
overall as we had some turnovers
and breakdowns in tackling that we
need to work on, said Annicchiarico.
Running back Jayden Hendricks
scored all three touchdowns; two of
them came on kick returns.
The Hawks final home game goes
Oct. 28 when the Provost Panthers
come to town.

with 47 saves for his third win. Hoover
played three seasons for the Thrashers,
from 2012-15, going 28-24 with 3.88

goals against average and a .902 save

percentage.
I was a lot more stressed out last
year playing against them. A lot of
them didnt understand why I left the
team, said Hoover, who moved to Calgary to take the plumbing program at
SAIT. This year it is a lot more fun and
relaxed out there.
Hoover still keeps in touch with most
of the Thrashers roster, saying that
most of them are very good friends.
There was no trash talk out there,
just five or six of them skated by and
asked me to start letting some in, he
said. It really helps me out to see
the offence come back. It takes a lot
of stress out of my game. They have
done a great job of battling back and
not calling her quits. That silly stuff in

the game that cost us last year is gone

now.
Matt Thompson capped off an incredible weekend with two more goals,
while other Kings scoring came from
Kristian Ayoungman, Bradley Tingey
and Cole Busslinger. Kody Hammond
(2), Ayoungman (2) Nolan Lightning,
Hayden Vanderploeg, Brooker Pretty
Youngman and Tingey rounded out the
assists.
Brooker and Matt have been working great together on the powerplay
this year, said Kings assistant coach
Keenan Desmet. Matt has a great shot
and Brooker has been getting him the
puck. Together, they have been a pretty deadly combo for us on the power
play.

Bisons on fire
to start season
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
After a 4-0 start on the road, the CFR
Chemical Bisons might want to show
up to their next home game a few
hours earlier so they can do a few laps
of Strathmore on the bus to simulate
another road trip.
The Bisons starched the SSAC Boston
Pizza Athletics 11-2 on Oct. 16 in Edmonton.
Were off to a pretty good start right
now, were a little ahead of where I
thought wed be at this point, said Bisons head coach Sandy Henry.
The Sherwood Park J. Ennis Kings
are the only other remaining unbeaten
team at 6-0.
Athletics forward Gavin Olito got
slapped with a five-minute major and
game misconduct for a crosscheck from
behind in the second period. On the
ensuing power play, the Bisons buried
three goals and never looked back.
Peyton Krebs sniped a hat trick and
two assists, Tyler Petrie finished with
two goals and one helper, Zach Huber
recorded two goals and two assists,
with other goals coming from Blake
Wells, Brandon Machado, Joel Krahenbil, Tarun Fizer.
Bisons picking up assists were Jackson Salt (2), Tyson Terretta (2), Cole
Clayton (2), Liam Belcourt, Cayde Augustine, and Fizer.
It was a pretty long road trip for
us. We took off Friday morning and
didnt get back until Sunday night, said
Henry. These guys did a great job taking care of themselves away from the
rink with regards to nutrition and their
sleep, so they were able to come to the
rink ready to go.
Hunter Young got the call between
the pipes and made 33 saves while
picking up one assist.
The Bisons were without forward
Kaden Hanas and he will be out two
more games following a questionable
slew-footing penalty he received during
Saturdays game in Lloydminster.
The Bisons trailed for the first time
this season, but mounted a comeback
with a large second period to down the
Lloydminster Bandit Energy Bobcats
6-2 at Centennial Civic Centre Arena.
Hanas hit occurred in the second period when he had his man pinned up
against the wall.

Well, Hockey Canada

changed their thoughts on
the slew foot rule this year,
said Henry. I thought it was
a good body check, the refs
viewed it differently and now
he is out.
Hanas received a game
misconduct that forced him
to sit out Sunday and he will
be suspended another two
games.
The Bisons trailed 2-0 after
yielding a pair of power play
markers three minutes into
the second.
For the first time this year
we were faced with a decision, said Henry. We could
have either got all pouty and
quit, or bear down and try
to make a difference in this
game.
Choosing the latter, the Bisons stormed back with four
goals to close out the second
period.
Clayton broke the seal and
was followed by goals from
Trentham, Krebs, Petrie,
Wells and Huber.
Following a 17-goal weekend, the scoring leaderboard

is crowded with Bisons.

Krebs sits in first with six
goals and 15 points; Huber
is second with six goals and
12 points with Salt in fourth
with three goals and nine
points.
Ben Laidlaw turned away
27 shots for his third win.
The Bisons return to the
friendly confines of the
Strathmore Family Centre
when they host the Leduc
Chrysler Oil Kings on Oct. 21
(8 p.m.) and the Athletics the
following day at 5:15 p.m.
Fridays game will be a rematch of the Bisons fourth
game of the season when
they trimmed the Oil Kings
5-1 back on Oct. 9.
Henry and his staff are
mulling over picking up a
few affiliated players for this
weekend, with Hanas forced
to sit out and Krebs playing
in the Western Canada U16
Challenge Cup at the Markin
MacPhail Centre in Calgary.
Along with a few small injuries, Henry wants to make
sure he has a full deck to
play with this weekend.

Quiet weekend on the local field for Badgers

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The Crowther Memorial Junior High
School Field lay empty this past weekend with all three Strathmore Community
Football Association Badgers programs
inactive.
Both the bantam and peewee teams were
off on a bye week and the senior Badgers
were scheduled to play in Carstairs, but
the Tigers forfeited on Oct. 14.
Apparently, the Tigers were missing

players due to injuries and prior commitments, but the senior Badgers also hammered the Tigers 124-0 the week prior.
The forfeit all but wraps up the No. 1
seed for the Badgers heading into the
playoffs in two weeks.
The senior Badgers finished 5-0-1 in the
regular season and clinched home field in
the playoffs. With a bye week this week,
the Badgers are still a little uncertain who
their first-round opponent will be.
It looks like its probably going to be
Didsbury in round one. There is still a
chance that the third and fourth seeds

can change this weekend, said Badgers

head coach Sean Seafoot.
The Badgers dumped the Dragons 38-0
back in Week 4. The Bowden Blazers are
the other team battling for third place.
The Badgers clubbed them 63-0 in Week
2. The Innisfail Cyclones currently sit in
second place as the Badgers hold the
edge in the tiebreaker. The two hooked
up for the most exciting game of the year,
which saw them play to a 42-42 tie.
One thing is for sure: the Mountain
View Football Conference title will have
to run through Strathmore and CMJHS
Field.
Its easy to look ahead to the finals,
but we need to focus on taking it one
game at a time, said Seafoot.
The semifinals are set for Oct. 29 with
the finals, permitting the Badgers are a
part of them, would go Nov. 5.
TOUGH BREAK
Unfortunately, despite the calm weekend, there was still a major injury to the
peewee team.
Sean Grill, fullback and outside linebacker, broke his femur during a practice
Thursday night (Oct. 13).
It happened during a scrimmage,
said Badgers head coach Doug Theissen,
who has coached six years with SCFA. It
was a complete freak accident. He was
playing defence, someone was blocking
him, he got pushed backwards and in the
process of going to the ground, someone
else got tripped onto him and landed on
his leg the wrong way. I have never seen
this injury before.
He was taken to the Calgary childrens
hospital where he had surgery Friday and
was released Sunday. During his time at

the hospital, a few Calgary Stampeders

stopped in to check on him.
Wide receiver Simon CharbonneauCampeau and former Stampeder Jabari
Arthur stopped by to try to cheer him
up. Arthur now works at the childrens
hospital and heard about Grills gruesome injury. He contacted CharbonneauCampeau, who experienced the same
injury as Grill, and the two popped by
to check on him. They talked football
and Charbonneau-Campeau was able to
show him his scars from the same injury
he once had and helped cheer him up.
With one regular season game remaining, the Badgers head up to Olds to take
on the Huskies (1-3). Thiessens crew
has sewn up top spot, so he will use this
game to work players into positions they
havent played yet this season.
I want to get guys reps at spots they
dont normally play and get them experience, so in case anything happens in
the playoffs, we will be able to stick guys
into those spots and they will have an
idea what to do, he said.
The peewee Badgers (5-0) are sitting
comfortably in first place and will travel
to Olds to battle the Huskies in their regular season finale. The Central Peewee
Football League playoffs begin Oct. 29.
Should the Badgers keep on winning,
they would host provincials in November.
REGULAR SEASON FINALE
The bantam Badgers (2-1) conclude
their Central Football League regular
season in a rematch with the Titans at
McMahon Stadium Oct. 22 (6:30 p.m.).
The Badgers and Titans squared off in an
exhibition match Oct. 15, in which the
Titans dumped the Badgers 40-0.

Shutout streak ends as Chiefs win

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
Wheatland Chiefs goaltender Tyler
Tarvyd came up a game-and-a-half
short of eclipsing Brian Bouchers consecutive shutout streak.
The 5-0 local double-A midget team
backed up Tarvyds performance with
a 3-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes (1-3-2) Sunday night during
South Central Alberta Hockey League
play at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Tarvyds streak was at 188 minutes
of perfection that all came to an end
when there was a dump in to the right
of his net. It appeared that he got
caught in between coming out to play
the puck and staying home in his net.
Hurricanes forward and South Central
Alberta Hockey League leading scorer
Keegan McDowell wrapped around the
net and tucked home his sixth goal.
Its too bad that the streak came to
an end, but its probably a good thing,
said Chiefs assistant coach Matt Gass.
Now guys arent focused on it anymore.
Tarvyd finished with 23 saves.
It took a while for the Chiefs jet-powered offence to get going; they only recorded seven shots in the first period.
Thats the second-straight game that
we didnt have our best effort in the
first period. That happens at this age,
guys arent prepared at the start, but
we talked about it and they understood, said Gass. We finally got the
puck deep and started working on
their defence. You can see a drastic
switch in our game and we began to
wear them down.
Robert Butterwick took the puck off
the right half-wall on a mini give-andgo from defenseman Scott Desserre.
Butterwick worked his way into the
slot and wristed one past Hurricanes
keeper Aaron Dekok with 1:20 remaining in the first.
We got a lot of fast, young guys on
this team. Once we get the puck down
low by the red line we can really make
some plays happen, said Butterwick,
who is tied for second on the team
with three goals in his third year.
The Hurricanes briefly took the lead
in the second period, but after a referee discussion, the goal was waved off
as it was kicked in.
The Chiefs settled nicely back into
their offensive plan in the second.
They managed to get past the Hurricanes defenders for several breakaway
attempts in the second and third.
Isaac Benoit took an outlet pass from
Brady Skiffington just past the Chiefs
blueline and was gone. Hitting the
after-burners, Benoit screamed past
three Hurricane defenders, avoided
the Dekok poke check, roofed it and
crashed into the boards with 5:07 left
in the second.
Butterwick added a late tally with
0:47 remaining in the second.
Butterwick is fun and he plays with
a lot of energy. He is always talking on
the bench and when he wants to, hes
one of the fastest guys on the ice, said
Gass.
Kelton Travis and Riley Romashenko
picked up assists on Butterwicks second goal. Travis sits fourth in league
scoring with two goals and six points.
The score could have been a lot
worse if it wasnt for Dekok. The
Chiefs began firing on all cylinders in
the third but didnt find the back of the
net. Dekok bailed out his defence several times, turning away 13 of his 32
saves in the third.

Aaron was fantastic for us tonight.

He made a lot of great saves and gave
us a chance at the end to be in the
game, said Hurricanes head coach
Robin Harper.
The Chiefs also brushed back the
CNHA Canucks 2-1 Oct. 15 at the
Strathmore Family Centre. The Canucks move to 1-1.
Scoreless after the opening frame,
Travis found mesh with 9:38 remaining
in the second. Ryan Longmuir added
his second of the season from Benoit
with 5:34 remaining in the third.
Riley Stovka started his first game between the pipes and recorded 27 saves.
This weekend, the Chiefs hit the road
and take on the Medicine Hat Hounds
(3-1-1) on Oct. 23. Their next home
game goes Oct. 29 at the Strathmore
Family Centre when CRAA Gold (2-0)
comes to town.
WARRIORS WIN!
The Wheatland Warriors hopped
back into the win column with a 4-1
dusting of the Red Deer Steel Kings (14-1) on Oct. 16 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
It has been a bit of challenging start
for the Warriors, who are still working
on coming together.
Sunday was a good effort, we got
better each period and finally developed some scoring touch in the third
period, said Warriors head coach Cody
Brown. We started to put it all together.
Kage Yellowfly opened the scoring
with 8:48 remaining in the first. The
Warriors (2-5-1) closed the game out
strong after Nolan Bailey scored the
winner with 8:20 to go in the second.
Bailey leads the Warriors with four
goals and six points. Third period
goals from Trey Gillis and Adam Kirkpatrick from Bryce Benfield and Bailey iced the Steel Kings. In net, Corey
Ross registered 27 saves for his first
win.
The Warriors started the weekend by
getting slighted 5-2 to the Okotoks Oilers Saturday night at Hussar Arena.
That was a bit of a tough game. I
think that team is very beatable, but
we just got into a little bit of penalty
trouble. It was avoidable if we just kept
our feet moving, said Brown.
The Oilers (5-2-2) capitalized on
three powerplay goals within the span
of six minutes in the first period.
Zach Nicholls got the Warriors on the
board 3:22 into the second from Mitch
Tessemaker and Gillis.
Kirkpatrick chipped in a goal with
less than eight minutes remaining in
the third from Yellowfly and Benfield.
Our biggest thing is work ethic right
now and searching for a strong 60 minutes, said Brown. We are good for 20
minutes, or 40 minutes, but we are still
searching for everyone to buy in and
all 19 guys working hard for a whole
game. I think it is something that will
come together over time, though.
The Warriors hit the road this weekend with games against the Bow Valley Timberwolves (4-2-1) on Oct. 22
at Cochrane Arena and then travel to
Blackie Arena the following day to take
on the Foothills Bisons (0-7).
The Warriors next home game is set
for Oct. 29 when they welcome the
Medicine Hat Hounds (2-3) to Hussar
Arena.
POINT TAKEN!
The Wheatland Braves notched their
first point of the season after 3-3 tie
with the Red Deer Parkland Transmis-

sion (2-1-2) on Oct. 16 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The bulldog, Tyler Fairbairn got the
Braves on the board with a powerplay marker from Adam Moore with
1:32 remaining in the first. Twenty two
seconds later, Josh Alberda found the
back of the net from Philip Raycroft.
After falling behind 3-2 in the second,
Carter Gosling tied the game with 1:20
remaining from Cole Tweit.
Matthew Dovichak stopped 25 shots.
The local double-A peewee team lost
9-3 to the Olds Grizzlys (6-0) on Oct.

14 at Hussar Arena.
The Braves were down 7-0 before
they managed to climb onto the score
sheet.
Fairbairn snuck one past the goalie
with 5:50 remaining in the second and
he opened scoring 4:52 in the third as
well. Cole Whelan added the third goal.
The Braves are on the road Oct. 21
for a rematch with the Olds Grizzlys
at Trochu Arena. Two days later, they
return to the Strathmore Family Centre
for a bout with the Red Deer Motors
(1-1-2). Puck drop is set for 4:15 p.m.

Joyful jelly bean dance

Kings take three of four

Continued from Page 18
Pretty Youngman and Thompson combined for five power
play goals this weekend.
Kings head coach Shadoe Stoodley was allowed to return
from his suspension for the Thrashers game. He served five
games for skating a player back in training camp that wasnt
properly released from his former club.
The Thrashers drop to 3-5-1.
It was an absolute barnburner in Airdrie. The Kings received a pair of hat tricks from two vets.
Thompson is entering his third season with the Kings and
is already experiencing career highs for points.
Thompson scored two in the first period and one in the
second for his hatty, while Pretty Youngmans third goal
forced overtime at the 4:20 remaining in the third.
It was nice to get back to our ways we had at the beginning of the year, said the Langdon native Thompson. I
would have rather scored no goals and us get the win instead of scoring a hat trick and losing. We should have won
this game in OT.
The Thunder (7-2-2) sits in first place in the Northern division with 16 points, two ahead of the Mountainview Colts
(7-1).
We blocked a lot of shots this weekend, played more
physically and more as a team. We got away from that type
of style that worked for us at the beginning of the season,
said Thompson.
Thompsons previous high was back in the 2014-15 campaign with the Kings. In 31 games he racked up six goals,
11 points and 259 penalty minutes. This year, Thompson
leads the team with eight goals and 12 points through seven
games.
Brooker and Kristian did a great job finding me with the
puck. They gave me lots of opportunities to shoot from all
over, firing pucks at the net, said Thompson.
The Thunder outshot the Kings 44-32. Kings netminder
Hoover exited the game part way through the first period for
a breather after allowing a couple of goals. He returned to
the net to start the second and finished with 33 saves, giving
him 80 stops on the weekend.
We still have lots of work to do in our D zone. Its good
that we started scoring again, but we need to build in our
defensive zone and work outwards, said Desmet.
The Kings did a great job shutting down one of the HJHLs
leading scorers. Clay Murray was recently named HJHL Player of the Week and was held to one assist.
The Kings travel to the Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre
to battle the undefeated Cochrane Generals (10-0) on Oct.
21. The Generals dusted the Kings in two exhibition games
this fall and in the second game of the regular season 6-3.
The Generals have had the Kings number lately.
We need to keep it simple against Cochrane, said Desemt. They have a great offensive crew that will capitalize
on any of our mistakes. They also have a great transition
game, so we need to focus on getting pucks in deep and put
our forecheck to work.
The Generals are armed with the two league leaders in
scoring. Connor Rendell has 21 snipes and 29 points, trailed
by Slater Ransom with seven goals and 27 points. The Generals have six skaters in the Top 15 in scoring.
Next home game for the Kings goes Oct. 22 (8:15 p.m.)
when the Medicine Hat Cubs (1-5-3) arrive at the Strathmore
Family Centre. The Kings went 1-3 against their Southern
Division rivals last season.
