Department have different ways of learning style/s. Learning style has an important place in the
lives of individuals especially students. When a student knows his/her learning style, s/he will
integrate it in the process of learning so s/he will learn more easily, fast and will be successful.
Knowledge of learning style also provides information to the student as to why s/he has learnt in
a different way than others. The researcher conducted a survey to determine each of student
learning style/s.

Figure 3.3 shows the block diagram of the survey. It will start from the subject that will
answer the questionnaire. From the questionnaire the researchers used statistical tools to process
and compare the data taken from the survey. The output will determine which learning style/s the
respondents belong.

3.2

Population, Sampling, and Respondents

The gathering of data was done last September 2016. The respondents of the research

were sampled from the population of Electronics Engineering Department of the College of
Engineering of Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), Manila, School Year 20152016. The researchers interviewed a total of 50 students from different year level in the
university.
The researchers chose the respondents using a simple random sampling. With this simple
random sampling, every member of the larger population has an equal chance of being selected.
A simple random sample also minimizes bias and simplifies analysis of results. In relation to
this, the researchers can accumulate reactions from different respondents resulting to a more
unbiased and yet accurate data.
3.3

Research Instrument
The researchers used a questionnaire that contains a series of questions and other prompts

for the purpose of gathering information from respondents, as the research instrument to be used
in the study.

4. Add the scores to find out your learning styles

When I am learning a new task, I prefer to:

read the available procedural manual first before getting down to work on
the task
ask an experience colleague how to perform the task

first work out the task myself before getting help later if I need to
write down my thought processes and take any notes which may help me
later
When receiving detailed instructions from a colleague, I prefer to:

Write down the instructions in a notebook

Listen to the instructions first and clarify later if necessary
Ask the colleague to list down the instructions in an e-mail so that I can
read them
Work through the instructed tasks first and then ask questions later if
necessary
Usually during workshops, I like to:

When I recall a piece of information, it would be:

Write key points or redraw diagrams in my learner guide

Work through the notes either by talking to myself or with my classmates

4 (K) Kinesthetic
When you have identified your learning style(s), read the learning styles explanations and consider how this
might help you to identify learning and development that best meets your preference(s).
Most of us would have two or three preferred learning styles. These are our strengths. Prof. Rita Dunn
termed those who are strong on ALL 4 learning styles are gifted. It means they are able to receive and
retain information in any of the four modes for long periods of time. For most people, we tend to tune out
after 20 minutes if we are receiving information in a mode which is not our learning style. For example,
some of us may lose focus or find our minds wandering after listening to 20 minutes of lecture if we are not
auditory.
VATK LEARNING STYLES
Visual Learners prefer to read texts or look at diagrams for themselves when learning new information.
You would ask for pictures, diagrams, demonstrations, displays, handouts, films, key points to be written on
flip-charts, PowerPoint presentations, and movie clips during your workshops. You would want people to

show you and will perform a new task better after reading the instructions or watching someone else do it
first.
Auditory Learners prefer to listen to verbal information either by others or self. You will need people to tell
you and will perform a new task better after listening to instructions. You can probably remember
instructions given over the telephone and can remember all the lyrics of songs you hear.
Tactile Learners prefer to use their fingers to write, draw or touch the information being relayed to them.
You would have a notebook near so you can write down the instructions. You may not refer to the notes
later on because the act of writing helps you retain the information. You will need people to let you write it
down and will perform a new task better after some thinking through by jotting down your thoughts on
paper.
Kinesthetic Learners prefer to learn via experiences such as engaging in skill practice, role play,
simulations, and peer teaching. You would like to try it out first and link your emotions to the learning
experience. Your motto would be do first, think later. You are someone who likes to experiment, have
hands-on learning, and articulate what you have learned without looking at the instructions first.
There is no right or wrong learning style. The point is that there are different ways of learning that are right
for your own preferred learning style. Focus on your strengths and you will excel.
