URBAN SPRAWL

By: Rachel Roberts

What is Urban Sprawl?

Expansion of central urban areas
into undeveloped land
(countryside/car dependant
communities)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_sprawl

Majority of people automatically think it is a negative

thing because of the term. It is said that Urban
Sprawl is a rallying cry for managing urban
growth

INTERESTING CAUSES OF SPRAWL

http://www.reading.ac.uk/PeBBu/state_of_art/actions/sprawl_control.htm

Public investments in roads, public buildings, water, sewer and other infrastructure in peripheral areas;
decrease in investment in existing centres.

Low cost fuel

Lower land prices in peripheral areas

Higher costs of development associated with existing centres

Preference of business and industry for easy highway access, plenty of free parking and corporate
identity

Demands of commercial tenants for particular locations and designs for buildings and sites

THE PROS AND CONS

PROS (living outside city)

Cost of larger homes in suburbs is

cheaper than in a city

CONS (environment)

Car pollution (respiratory issues)

Destroying farmland with

construction ( animal habitats
ruined)

Parents prefer less crowded

schools for younger children

Outside the city there is less

crime

Personal feeling (Belonging to a

community, instead of being one
in a million in city)

Higher taxes (the population is

more disperse needing more
government buildings)

Contributes to the construction

industry

Blending of urban centers (what

is the point of different cities if
you cannot tell them apart?)

In my opinion the pros of urban sprawl are all

related to the wants of the human population
and the cons relating to the needs of our earth.
Is it more important that every human gets
there wants they could live without, or that
the earth that we live in is safe, healthy and
gets what it needs?
Even though this seems like there is an easy
answer, this is a very controversial issue.

DAVID SUZUKI ON THE TOPIC OF SPRAWL

Thoughts:

Sprawl is the result of poor planning and short sightedness

Major problem is that it creates a massive carbon footprint effecting our health

People weigh more because they do less walking and more commuting

Putting our greenspace at serious risk

The concerns of urban sprawl have to be presented and advertised to the public in a more
serious manner

SOLUTIONS

Urban Sprawl is
not something
we can just put a
stop to, but it is
something we
can try to
improve.

The thought of
taking down the old
to put up the new.

Brownfields(vacant or
underused property) are
a way to redevelop

BROWNFIELDS
Some people think this is a bad idea because to them these properties are dirty and contaminated

I think as long as the property is tested and cleaned up to healthy standards

that redeveloping in these places is a AMAZING idea that will help prevent the
cons of urban sprawl.

An important point to mention:

Cleaning up contaminated lands also

provides better quality land and water, and
restores lands to a healthier condition.

I think there is a need to

preserve the wilderness and
agricultural land found in
our country and others!

I believe that the

Greenbelt is a great
representation of
space devoted to this
cause.

THE GREENBELT
This foundation has been a success at protecting land and is a great role model for
more protection in the future
Recent events declares that:
The province has proposed, among other changes, growing the Greenbelt into 28
urban river valleys and wetlands, more support for farming and local food, and a
commitment to grow our towns and cities smartly.

PERSONAL
EXPERIENCE

Coming from a small town.

Oakville, Brampton and Mississauga are complete chaos compared to
where I live. It is always busy and there is always traffic! A lot of this
chaos is because of commuters coming from small suburbs like where I
live. I am not used to seeing the true effects urban sprawl has day to day.

The urban sprawl I notice

from my town Fonthill ON, is
that the construction of new
complexes is slowly getting
bigger and bigger! I also see
the reconstruction of buildings
that could be redeveloped
instead of replacing some of
our beautiful farmland.

Time to learn more and prevent.
