DANCING - Is the rhythmical

movement of the body, usually with


music, to express an idea or emotion,
to narrate a story or simply to enjoy
and take pleasure in the movement
itself.
Dance may have been the very first
means of communication.
Dance of the earliest times differ from
those of the present times; the dance
of the barrio folks differ from those of
the city.

3. DESIGN is the planned


organization or pattern of movements
in time and space.
- Involves the movements and the
positioning of the dancers and the
steps executed by them.
4. SUBJECT Is the message of the
dance.
- It tells what the dance is all about.
5. MOVEMENTS are classifies into
steps, gestures and facial expressions.

There are primitive and non-primitive


dances. Indians dance to give thanks
for the harvest, the Mexicans to
celebrate religious festival, teenagers
dance at parties, and children
everywhere dance because it is
pleasurable to express joy through
bodily movements or body language.

STEPS are the dancers movement


from one point on stage to another
(leaps, turn, rolls).

of eyebrows, pouting of lips)

ELEMENTS OF DANCE
1.DANCER is the most important
element of dance.
- He is the performer, executes the
steps, follows the instructions of the
choreographer, wears the costume
and carries the props.
2. CHOREOGRAPHY is the dance
director, does the over all design of
the dance, assigns the steps to be
executed by the dancer, select the
costumes and props that go with the
dance and determine the set designed
for the dance.

GESTURES are the movement of


the hands, head, feet and other body
parts (swaying, head shaking,
clapping)

6. TECHNIQUE is the style or way of


executing the movements.
7. COSTUMES are the things worn
by the dancers during their
performance.
8. PROPERTIES (Props) are the
things carried by the dancers as they
perform.
9. SET DESIGNS is the setting or
the background that indicates the
place of action for the dancers.
10. THEATRICAL ELEMENTS

KINDS OF DANCES
1.BALLET this type of dance has its
origin in the royal courts of the middle
ages. It is the great spectacular dance

form of the Western World and even in


our country today.

poses and steps are combined with
light flowing figures, accompanied by
music and scenic accessories

2. ETNOLOGIC DANCE This dance


is natve to a particular ethnic group.
They were performed by dancers
associated with national and cultural
groups.
Religious rituals (ethnic dances) are
designed as hymns of phrase to a god,
or to bring in good fortune in peace or
war.
Fold dances are derived from ethnic
dance. It is a form of social dancing
that has become part of the customs
and traditions of people.
3. SOCIAL AND BALLROOM DANCE
They are popular type of dancing
usually performed by pairs.
They include such form as waltz,
foxtrot, swing, cha cha, boogie, tango
and the latest rock dances.
Many of the social dances are fads
that became associated with the
period in which they were popular.
4. MODERN DANCES
Sometimes called contemporary or
interpretative dances.
They represent rebellion against the
classical formation of the ballet;

5. THEATRICAL OR SPECTACULAR
DANCE
This type of dance is performed for the
entertainment of spectators.
Theatrical dancing includes the ballet,
modern dance musical comedy dances
and tap dancing.
Theatrical dancers may derive
satisfaction from creating something
beautiful but their own enjoyment is
less important than their ability to
interpret the dance effectively for the
audience.
