Wienerberger

Brick Award
Launched in 2004, Wienerberger
Brick Award rewards every two years
international-class
innovative
and
creative buildings made with ceramic
materials and also the architects
behind these buildings.
Remarkable buildings all around the
world, constructed using ceramic
products, are subjected to the jury's
consideration by critics and journalists
specialized in architecture. The field
work of these architecture scouts is
helping the Wienerberger team to
identify those buildings which trigger,
by prestige and audacity, a long-lasting
impression. Both classical brick faade
construction solutions and creative
ceramic tiles and pavements are
considered. A very special attention is
given to the way the building integrates
within the environment as well as to
the building's geometry, personality,
quality or lighting.

2014 Wienerberger
Brick Award

Romanian presence in
the Caldwell Catalogue

The Architects Order of Romania,

in partnership with Wienerberger
Romania, announced in February
the official start of the enrolment to
the 2014 Wienerberger Brick Award.
The Romanian architects who create
projects that fulfil the international
selection criteria established by
Wienerberger AG, the organizer of the
Wienerberger Brick Award 14, were
invited to enrol until the end of March.

The Romanian project selected to

be included in the famous Brick'12
catalogue published by Caldwell, a
housing complex built on the BufteaSmurcai lake's banks and designed
by architect Radu Teac, is owing
its success much to its style which
is closer to the vernacular spirit
than to the rustic manner of many
contemporary architecture creations.
The eight houses built in a row are of
three types, with areas of 220, 240
and 260 square meters, optimally use
their effective area and were designed
in such a manner that the corridors for
interior circulation have an area of only
4 square meters.

We wish the Romanian architects every

success at this famous international
contest!

For the award's 2012 edition, 50

architects from 28 countries and 5
continents were nominated, then
ranked, by a panel of renowned
experts including Plamen Bratkov
(Bulgaria),
Rudolf
Finsterwalder
(Germany), Hrvoje Hrabak (Croatia),
John Foldbjerg Lassen (Denmark) and
Zhang Lei (China).

Catalogue 2013

1. Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa / First Prize and
winner in the Special Brick Solutions category
2. Home for the elderly, Alcacer do Sal, Portugal / Winner in
the Residential Buildings category
3. Electric power plant of the 2012 Olympic Park, London,
Great Britain / Winner in the Non-Residential Buildings
category
4. Hare's Den, Gaasbeek, Belgium / Winner in the OneFamily House category
5. Conversion of a dilapidated building, Cachtice, Slovakia /
Winner in the Conversion category

The project is extensive and also

includes a recreational area with
sport courts, a club and a swimming
pool available for future owners. The
creation of a quiet atmosphere to
benefit from the lake's landscape and
the high quality of the entire housing
complex through architecture and
indoor and outdoor development
works was envisaged.

Porotherm Lintels in Ceramic Shell

Porotherm lintels are linear elements of precast and prestressed concrete in a ceramic shell, that were designed by
taking into consideration three essential characteristics of your
construction project: efficiency, versatility and compatibility to
other constructive systems.
During the production process, within the ceramic shell of
the Porotherm lintel, steel wires and high class concrete
are introduced, thus obtaining the pre-stressing and the
standardization of the elements for each product. Porotherm
lintels are conformed for different loads, taking into
consideration the span of the opening, so that they can be
used in a wide variety of situations.

Construction elements placed in the upper part of masonry

openings for doors and windows with the role to support the
masonry or reinforced concrete above such openings.

Porotherm mortars are latest generation products for their

category and were developed using today's most modern
technologies. Due to such fact, these mortars need by 22%
less preparation time and eliminate for good any composition
errors, since the raw materials mixture is already dosed and
mixed in the production process. In such a way, you will
obtain for your construction project optimal execution time
and material consumptions, also when these mortars are
used together with Porotherm STH products, the reduction
or even elimination of the building's external thermal
insulation, is feasible (depending of the specific of the project).

for a perfect building!
BRICKHOUSE in Romania

Energy
For your long-term enjoyment and wellbeing inside your home, Wienerberger
invested value so your house will be
energy-efficient during its entire life.

Ecology
The bricks are the basic element of
any building. Their source is the natural
environment, being made out of clay. If
you decide to demolish a construction,
the bricks could return into the nature
without pollution or could be re-used
for other buildings. At the same time,
the closed circuit used in Wienerberger
brick factories does not allow the
elimination of polluting substances
into the atmosphere. Bricks are
manufactured out of the 4 basic natural
elements: earth, water, air and fire.

BRICKHOUSE
The
e4
BRICKHOUSE
2020
Wienerberger
concept
(Energy,
Ecology, Economy, Emotion) which
was publicly presented at the 2012
edition of Brick Award, was finalized in
Austria at the end of last year. The e4
Program is Wienerberger's response
to the challenges posed by the
construction of the future house.
Due to the materials used, such
house has minimum energy losses,
close to zero.
This concept combines four key
elements: execution of energyefficient brick masonry, affordable
construction prices and a decrease in

energy consumption, intensive usage

of alternative energy resources, as
well as unique housing quality.

Following the project's success in NorthEastern Austria, Wienerberger Romania

launched a similar challenge to the
Romanian constructions market. The
stake of this concept is to design and build
an energy efficient house compliant with
the 2020 European standards, but which,
besides being walled up using Porotherm
products available in Romania, will have to
be designed at an affordable final price,
close to that for an usual building of similar
sizes and functions.

We wish to prove that making healthy,

energy-efficient
and
affordable
buildings is possible using bricks, said
Heimo Scheuch, Wienerberger CEO.
The house complies with the latest
European directives for buildings
which, as of 2020, require that new
buildings have a close-to-zero thermal
transfer and, thus, energy loss. e4
BRICKHOUSE 2020 will be a house
that will produce more energy than
its energy consumption, using only
energy from renewable sources.

A house built with the Porotherm system

ensures the optimal temperature
irrespective of the season, at a low
cost for utilities. The materials durability
and quality guarantee the long-time
preservation of the building's value.

Emotion
You spend 90% of your time indoors,
and a significant part of it in your
home. A house built with bricks
provides a pleasant, comfortable
and healthy environment to you and
your family. For high seismic activity
areas, Wienerberger created, by
means of research and state-of-the-art
technology, special products that offer
earthquake-resistant masonries.
