17 THE FAMILY

Filipinos regard the family as the center of their lives, their primary support
and the source of their moral strength and motivation.

The Family is the first human society.

Society a moral union of men for the purpose of attaining a common end.

Man by nature is a social animal. He cannot survive alone. He needs other


men.

KINDS OF SOCIETY
1. Natural and Positive
Natural Society a society which is derived from natural law, from the
essential need of man
as man.
Ex. Family and the political state
Positive Society a society which is derived from a human positive law.
Ex. Political parties, business organizationsetc
2. Necessary and Unnecessary
* With reference to the needs of man as man some societies are
necessary and man cannot do away with them. Such as the family and
the state. Others are unnecessary and man has the option to be a
part of it or not.
FAMILY the first and the most fundamental unit of society. It is made up of the
father, mother,
children, and relatives.
a necessary society.
Its from the family that the State derives its strength.
THE IDEAL FAMILY
* Parents and children are bound to each other not only by the laws of genetics, but by
the law of love.

* Not by material needs and luxuries


* Genuine love is the solid foundation of a good home.
* LOVE = TIME
THE FAMILY & THE CHILD
* Marriage is not the pleasure of marital sex.
* The child is the product of love who must be reared with tender hands of love.
The child deserves to be loved and be taught how to love.
* The greatest tragedy in this world is the failure to provide a family, a shelter
of love, for the child
THE EDUCATION OF THE CHILD
* The education of the child is the primary responsibility of the parents.

* Society or the state has a complimentary duty to assist the family in the
education of the child.
EMANCIPATION the state of independence from parental authority.
it commences at the age of majority, that is, at the age of 21.
it also attained when a minor enters marriage.
FILIAL PIETY the love and devotion which children must profess to their
parents.

Filius = son

Honor thy father and thy mother.

He who leave his parents does not dare to hate others.

THE EXPLOITATION OF CHILDREN
EXPLOITATION it refers to any act of enticing or inducing a person to act in a
manner prejudicial
to his interest.

Direct Exploitation when the inducement is intended to use a person for


ones evil
purpose.
Ex. forcing a child to steal
Indirect Exploitation when the inducement is not intentional, but
nonetheless harmful.
Ex. TV show portraying violence
Exposure of children to TV commercials which promote poor
eating habits.
CHILD LABOR
* It is wrong, when children have to work as a matter of physical survival.
* The way we treat our children, especially street children is the true measure
of our civilization.
* If children must work, there must be sufficient laws to protect them from
abuses and exploitation.
