I.- CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard
The teacher candidate collects data regarding the institutional and classroom
contexts, the characteristics of the pupils as a group and its diversity, using this
information to plan and deliver instruction.

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality or

owner and school factors: Below, describe the geographic location, community
and school population, socioeconomic profile, and race/ethnicity.
Liceo Rios de Chile is a public institution, located in Camino Forestal Dichoco S/N,
Lirqun. The number of students is around 485 approx. This institution was built in
2000 to give educational opportunities to the students who live around Lirqun and
Penco. The grades covered by the institution are: (?), kindergarten education,
elementary education, and high school education; giving them the opportunity to
acquire a technical degree in accounting, or business administration specialized in
a foreign language (English).
The educational community in Rios de Chile is characterised by a particular
socioeconomic profile which is: middle social class, and people with low incomes; in
fact, the 85% of the educational community in the institution come from families
with low-incomes.
Besides, even though the institution receives students who live around the
commune, there are some students who are from another country;in fact, they are
immigrants (unknown country)
The amount of teachers who are working in this institution are 43 teachers as a
total.
The mission of the institution is to keep on working for the improvement of the
community.

The vision of the institution is to create competent learners with a high level or
sense of belonging; learners who can work with good values and with the
commitment to his/her learning and self-fulfilment.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons: Explain specific

ways that these factors may impact your lesson topics, teaching
strategies, assessment techniques, etc.
Considering all these aspects about Rios deChile high school, it is important
to focus the attention of the class on learners background knowledge. This
will impact my lesson with no doubt at the moment of planning the class. I
will have to be conscious about the level of english of the students for
making them learn but not affecting their capacities. In addition, I will have
to promote strategies that can help students to achieve the purpose of the
lesson and to get the level of english they have to get.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications: Below, describe

how two student characteristics you observed in your student (e.g., gender,
race/ethnicity, interests, student skill levels) might impact the way you instruct
those students. For example, your planning, motivation, management, or
assessment. For each example of the student characteristic, give a specific
instructional implication that will influence how you plan and implement your
instruction.
2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
The learner observed in class is a male that tends to be distracted by
everything. Moreover, the learner is always paying attention to his cell
phone; even though, the learner is a little bit concerned with the subject;
actually, he claims that he would like to learn English, but he thinks that he
will never be able to succeed, because when he tries to learn, he always fail.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

Students characteristics may impact my lesson in the sense of making him
feel confident and comfortable with his performance. As a student of
English, I have experienced how uncomfortable is to talk in a language you
do not know in deep. Nonetheless, it is not impossible to get a good
performance. I strongly believe that being successful in English, and in
other courses, is a matter of practicing and not feeling afraid or ashamed of
making mistakes. In addition, I will have to use different ways of
motivating the student, and as Krashen (1982) establishes the theory of

affective filter, I will have to reduce that filter to the lowest level in order to
make student succeed and feel successful.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:

The learner observed is a male of 17 years old. He is always sat at the back
of the classroom in the column next to the door. He is very talkative so do
their classmates. . Even though the learner can not be concentrated all the
class, he is interested in learning English. During the lesson he asks for help,
feedback and corrections. (observation. 05/02)

2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:

The learners characteristics will impact my lesson in the way I assess the
student. For instance, I have to monitor him and provide him immediate
feedback in order to make the student being immersed in content and in the
class. I also will have to plan using interesting topics that make him
interested and participating in the class.

3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:

Below, describe how two physical aspects of the classroom you observed (e.g.,
posters, room arrangement, technology) might impact the way you instruct
students, for example, planning, motivation, management, or assessment. For each
example, give a specific instructional implication that will influence how you plan
and implement your instruction.
3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
Classroom arrangement: Learners are sat in pairs, in fact, there are 2 chairs out of
1 long table. The are around 6 pairs of students in each column. Besides, there are
3 columns inside the classroom. (observation 04/25)
3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
The impact of this kind of classroom arrangement will impact my lesson in
the sense of working in pair or groups. In addition, student are familiarized
with this type of work that allows them to share information and to perform
an efficient collaborative work. If I would like to perform an individual
activity, I would have to monitor and help them individually.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:

Technological resources: Inside the classroom, there is not a computer available;

however, there is a project installed on the roof of the classroom. Students use an
individual table to stack books in order to make the projector works properly.
3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
This aspect described will impact my lesson when I have to use that technological
resources. For instance, teachers use digital presentations all the time. These
materials are essentials for encouraging the class, moreover, students pay special
attention to new tools presented in the class. I will have to be extremely prepared
in case the projector or the computer does not work. In fact, if there is not a
possibility to use the resources inside the classroom, I will have to book the library
or any other laboratory or room where I can perform the class.

3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the

context to provide quality teaching

There is a huge importance of knowing the students I am going to teach to.

Consequently, if I do not know them, I will not know what to expect from them.
There are around 36 students inside the class, there is no hesitations when thinking
they all are different. Every single student wants to achieve a different goal from
his/her classmate, in fact, no one is the same as their classmates. Knowing every
student separately, would give the teacher a complete perspective of his/her
students and he/she will know how to help them in case they need. It also has to
deal with how I will plan the lesson, for instance, I will have to focus on students
different strengths and weaknesses in order to reinforce them in all aspects.
