Holding the Holy Grail

By Jessica Howard

Primary School students
have shared in the Bulldogs premiership
success.
The 2016 AFL Premiership Cup visited
the local primary school on Friday
(October 21) with representatives from
the Footscray club.
Principal Allan Peach said the school

was involved with the Western Bulldogs

schools program and was in partnership
with Victoria University.
As a partner school of Vic Uni, we have
players sent out to us. Half way through
the year we had Jake Stringer down here
and now theyve sent us the premiership
cup, he said.
Its all about teaching the kids that
anything is possible and to follow their

dreams. We talk about teamwork and

the importance of diet and routine. A lot
of the kids out here barrack for Western
Bulldogs, with about ten students
actually attended the grand final, which
is just amazing.
Mr Peach said the program was a great
way for the students to take part in the
celebrations.

They see the premiership cup on the

TV, but being able to actually hold it in
their arms and take photos with it is
really great. This type of thing teaches
them about working both in a team and
as an individual to achieve something.
The Western Bulldogs claimed the
premiership cup on October 1 after they
beat the Sydney Swans by 22 points,
ending a 62-year drought.

Farming the culture

By Kate Taylor
As Kate Sharkey puts it,
Farming Moorabool is putting the culture back into
agriculture.
And theyre bringing out
the big guns to make it happen - the groups networking night, held at the Wallace Hotel in early October
and attracted more than
100 guests, featured guest
speaker Catriona Rowntree.
Not only is the media personality and travel presenter
an entertaining speaker
but she is married to a
farmer, and is a neighbour
of the Sharkey family from
Balliang.
Farmers the lifestyle

you have is the envy of the

world, let me assure you, the
lifestyle you live each, and
every day. And I hope you
celebrate that, you are proud
of that and you accept city
chicks like me, who come in
and sing your praises, Ms
Rowntree told the audience.
What you do every day, is
to be celebrated - you have
the power to come together
and do that. I am in awe of
what you do.
Ms Sharkey, who organised
the event, said the night exceeded all expectations with
over 100 producers attending the evening to network
with others, share ideas and
realise the potential farmers
have in the region if they
work together.

It was a great turn out with

a wide cross section. From
producers whose families
have been farming sustainably in the region for over 100
years to producers whove
only joined the industry
more recently, Ms Sharkey
said.
Since the event, Ms Sharkey
has received phone calls and
emails from people offering
to help and be involved.
Central to the aim of Farming Moorabool is to act as a
platform for producers to
network across commodity
sectors to discuss the issues
and seek out opportunities for the future. Farming
Moorabool aims to help
farmers with direct marketing ideas and advocate

more strongly for the issues

affecting long term viability
of farm businesses such as
municipal rates.
Farming Moorabool also
wants to provide consumers the opportunity to get to
know and understand their
food producers better. Farm
tours, community events
and school educational programs are some of the ideas
the group are working on.
For more information go to
www.farmingmoorabool.
com.au.
The evening was sponsored
by the Ballan Community
Bank, Bacchus Marsh Community Bank and Rural
Bank.

Two spots left on wall

By Jessica Howard
Time is running out for Bungaree residents
who wish to honour their ancestors.
The Bungaree Historical Societys heritage
wall has just two vacant spaces that are
available to fill with a dedicated plaque.
Bungaree Historical Society president Dennis
Spielvogel said the completed project would
incorporate a total of 54 commemorations.
We first unveiled the wall in 2009, which
at the time had just 12 plaques. Over the past
eight years weve got the rest together and we
will officially unveil the completed wall on
Australia Day.
The plaques only allow for eight lines of text,
so on the day descendants of families will
have the opportunity to unveil the plaque and
provide a full account of their family history,
which we will keep in the Historical Society
for future generations.
The information provides an insight into
where each family came from and their
journey to the district.
Mr Spielvogel said the special event, to be
held on January 26 of next year, would also
provide an opportunity for attendees to have
fun and socialise.
Its more than just an unveiling ceremony.
Anyone and everyone is invited to what will
be a great day of games, activities and the
eighth annual Bungaree spud peel off, he
said.
It really will be a great day because this has
been a terrific project that the whole society
and a lot of the community has been involved
in.
For more information, or to dedicate a plaque,
contact Dennis Spielvogel on 5334 0246 or
Heather Trigg on 5334 0226.

New faces on council

By Kate Taylor
Theres been a changing
of the guard at the Bacchus
Marsh Arts Council Inc.
Local prize-winning ceramic sculptor Ri Van Veen has
been appointed as President
of BMACI for the 2016/2017
year.
Ris nomination for President was confirmed unopposed at the AGM in early
October.
Arts & Design teacher Kylie Burton was appointed as
Vice-President and retiring
East Moorabool Councillor
John Spain was appointed as
Secretary and continues in
the role as Treasurer.
Long-serving BMACI member David Leach has stepped
back from the Secretarys
role but has promised to remain an active member of
BMACI.
In accepting her appoint-

ment, Ri thanked previous

office holders and committee members for their commitment and hard work over
the previous year.
Special thanks is due to
our supporters in the community who donated a total
of $1230 to enable the set- up
of our BMAC Gallery, and to
the Village Bacchus Marsh
shopping centre for generously providing an excellent
space for the Gallery, Ri
said.
We have achieved an enormous success in opening the
BMAC Gallery in the Village
shopping centre. Our immediate focus now shifts to
preparing for our Makers
Market that will be part of
the Bacchus Marsh Strawberry & Cherry weekend in
November this year.
Applications for stalls in the
Makers Market, where high
quality Arts and Crafts will
be exhibited and sold at the

Bacchus Marsh Hall, has

outstripped the number of
available places.
BMACI has started a selection process to determine
which applications will be
confirmed.
Ri Van Veen said that BMACIs long-term flagship activity, the Placemaking Project,
continues to develop in the
background.
The project, that will see a
significant artwork installed
in main Street Bacchus
Marsh, has reached the stage
of requiring serious funding
to proceed.
Theres a lot on our plate,
Ri said. But with our increasing membership and
the aid of supporters and
volunteers to develop our
projects we look forward to
achieving big things for artists and the Bacchus Marsh
community over the next
year.

CWA returns under the

cover of darkness

By Kate Taylor

A night branch of the Country Womens Association is

starting in Ballan.
After some time away from
the town, the CWA is returning with the new night
branch set to draw women
who are busy during the
day.
This time it will be a night

branch so that students and

working women can also
join in. We already have one
high school student signed
up, said member Gail
Fiander.

Ms Fiander explained that

the resurgence came following the District Arts and
Craft Expo held earlier this
year

All are welcome to the

launch of the first-ever night
branch of the CWA in Ballan, on Thursday 27 October
from 7.30pm at the Ballan
Golf Club.

CWA used to operate out

of the Ballan Mechanics
Institute Hall doing catering
for all events and groups, including debutante balls.

Eyesore in limbo
By Kate Taylor
A retrospective permit for a Grant
St office block will not be supported
by Moorabool Shire Council.
The October 6 council meeting
heard that, although already built
and including ten offices, a permit
for the two-storey building will not
be supported by council, with the
matter sitting before the Victorian
civil and Administrative Tribunal.

By Kate Taylor

VCAT granted the initial permit

in 2007, after council missed a 28day deadline to issue a notice of
decision.

A council officer told the meeting

that the deadline was missed because it was a complex application,
and that now, the building would
have also required a greater street
frontage setback.
The VCAT permit has since expired, with the building being
completed after the expiration,
hence the retrospective permit
application.

The site provides 11 car parking

spaces, including one dedicated
disabled parking space, however
the requirement is for 27 spaces to
be provided meaning the site, as
it is, falls 16 car spaces short of the
requirement.
Council requested that the applicant engage a traffic engineer for an
assessment of how many spaces are
required to meet the demand.

The applicant has not considered

parking spaces surrounding the
site that will be under more pres-

sure if the site is occupied by tenants that will attract more visitors
to the area, read a report tabled at
the meeting.

The applicant has not provided

any car parking data or analysis
and based on limited information
within their written submission,
the applicant has not demonstrated
adequate justification for a reduction to the standard car parking
rate. Without any adequate justification that includes a proper car
parking analysis, the application
cannot be supported on car parking

grounds.
Concerns were also raised in the
report about works undertaken
internally, which are not in line
with the endorsed plans including kitchen and bathroom facilities which could see the site used
as residential dwellings instead
of offices; the report notes that an
enforcement order would prevent
any future owners using the site as
dwellings without first obtaining a
separate permit.
Councillors passed a motion that
council advise VCAT that it does

not support the application, based

on the reduced car parking as well
as conflicts with current planning
policies.

East Ward Councillor John Spain

seconded the motion, with changes
to include mention of the lack of
set-back.

The commercial development

is not set back from the property
line I have no doubt VCAT will
approve this and the people of Bacthe Mill Cottage : restaurant & cafe

Students at Balliang East Primary School are a shady bunch.

But not in a bad way the kids
will now have extra shade when
they are out and about in the
schoolyard.
Sunshades will be put up at the
school thanks to a $23,000 grant
under the second round of the
School Shade Grants Program.
Member for Buninyong Geoff
Howard announced the funding, saying it will give the kids
extra protection from the sun.
Overexposure to UV during
childhood and adolescence is
known to be a major contributor
to developing skin cancers later
in life, Mr Howard said.
With warmer weather not
too far away Victorias average
UV levels increase the risk for
those without adequate sun
protection.
We want all children to learn
to be sun smart by maintaining a healthy balance of UV
exposure when theyre playing
outdoors.
The Schools Shade Grant Program is complemented by the
Community Shade Grant Program that provides grants for
shade in community settings
such as parks, sports clubs and
playgrounds.
Those interested in future
grant rounds can register their
interest by emailing shade.

Murder in Marsh

By Jessica Howard

A Bacchus Marsh man has been fatally shot in the

driveway of his Labilliere Street home, in broad
daylight.
Emergency services were called to the property just
before 8:20am on Tuesday (May 24) after the victim,
who was sitting in his vehicle, sustained a gunshot
wound to the head.
The man, identified by police as 48-year-old Paul
Hogan, died at the scene.
His alleged girlfriend, 26-year-old Yu Tung Lo, was
arrested by Homicide Squad detectives on Wednesday
night alongside a 33-year-old Thornbury resident
Daniel Duhovic.

It is also alleged Duhovic shot the victim at pointblank range at the request of Yu Lo. The pair appeared
in Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday, each
charged with one count of murder.
A Maddingley resident who ran past the Labilliere
Street property just moments before the incident,
said he saw a female of Asian appearance and a man
standing outside the house at around 8am.
I was jogging past and I saw an Asian lady standing
outside with another guy, I think he might have been
[the victims] flat mate, not the shooter. They had a
whole heap of boxes and bags, I thought she might have
been going overseas or something.
The resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said
the two were standing and talking quietly.

They werent arguing. When I later heard there had

been a shooting on that street, I remembered that I had
seen them standing outside the house.
The area was cordoned off for over eight hours.
In the days following Mr Hogans death, tributes
flowed into Bacchus Marsh Noodle Lovers, where he
was employed as a delivery driver.
Members of the community also took to social media
to pay their respects.
What a tragic and sad case of affairs. No one wins
here; a family have lost a dad and another family will
be grieving over the choice their loved one made.
Breaks my heart, a post read.
Daniel Duhovic and Yu Tung Lo will reappear in court
on October 20.

Letters to the Editor

Email: news@themooraboolnews.com.au

Dear Editor,
Adequate health care is a vital foundation for a thriving
country community.
But under Daniel Andrews our country hospitals are
struggling.
Annual reports just released in parliament indicate 21
Victorian hospitals are currently operating in deficit 19 of
these are located in rural and regional areas.
Daniel Andrews promised to fix our hospitals, but it is clear
things are getting worse not better.
Why is it that more often than not, when we hear of a
hospital service facing cuts or struggling to retain doctors, it
is in a regional area?
If Daniel Andrews is serious about creating jobs and
investment in country areas, he needs to make sure we have
access to reliable and well-supported health care.
After the windfall $9.7 billion sale of the Port of Melbourne
lease there really is no excuse for Daniel Andrews to continue
neglecting the health of country people.

Message from the Premier

This summer is forecast to be a
dangerous fire season. Fire Action
Week is the time for all Victorians
to begin preparing.
Many communities throughout
Victoria have been battling with
persistent rain and rising flood
waters. This rainfall has provided
the stimulus for increased growth
of vegetation in forested, bush and
grass fire areas across the state. As
summer intensifies, these regions
will dry out quickly, increasing
the risk of uncontrollable fires, especially over the Christmas and
summer holiday period.
Emergency services are working
with communities, businesses,
local councils and government to
reduce the risk in your area, while

ensuring resources are in place to

respond to all emergencies. However, it is up to you to understand
the risk in your area, monitor conditions and take responsibility for
your own safety and the safety of
your household.
Taking steps to get prepared before summer means you know
what to do when a fire starts.
Talk to your family and friends
about how youll know when to
leave and where to go to stay safe.
Leaving early means leaving
before a fire starts not when you
can see flames or smell smoke.
Leaving early means avoiding
panic, being trapped and making

Strong start

selling

Ph: 5368 1455 OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK

128 INGLIS STREET, BALLAN

Regional Victoria has experienced one of the strongest

starts to the spring selling
season in recent years, with
homes selling 10 days faster
in September in a median of
56 days.
With the majority of Victorian homes sold by private
sale, the median number of
days a home takes to sell is a
key market indicator for this
type of sale. Any decline in
the median number of days
on market indicates increasing buyer interest in a suburb, town or region.
The latest REIV data shows
Hepburn Springs, northeast
of Ballarat, recorded one of
the states largest improvements in September with
homes selling in a median of
71 days 17 days faster than
in August.
Homes also sold faster in
the Ballarat suburb of Newington with the number of
days on market falling 16
days over the month to a
median of just 30 days on
market.
Significant declines in median days on market were
also recorded in Gippsland,
with homes in the holiday

town of Paynesville selling

14 days faster in a median of
88 days.
Buyer interest was evident
in the commuter town of
Trentham, where homes
sold 12.5 days faster in the
first month of spring in a
median of 74.5 days.
Similar improvements were
experienced in Nagambie
and Redan, both falling 12
days to a median of 58 days
on market.
Other towns experiencing
improvements in days on
market include Lake Wendouree, down 11 days to 45
days; Echuca, down 10 days
to 48 days; St Leonards,
down 8.5 days to 86 days; the
Ballarat suburb of Golden
Point, down eight days to 39
days; and Seymour, down
eight days to a median of 60
days on market.
Homes in Drouin, Miners
Rest and Stratford all sold
seven days faster in September with median days on
market of 49, 51 and 73 days
respectively.
Meanwhile, there were
several regional towns that
topped the list for days on
market in country Victoria.
In September, Herne Hill
was one of Victorias top
private sale markets with
homes selling in a median of
29 days.
This was followed by the
Geelong suburb of Bell Post
Hill which recorded a median days on market of just
30 days.

Results - Round 3
With the McIntyre team starting the
season with a narrow loss (Round 1) at
home to last years premiers Gisborne and a
loss away (Round 2) at Romsey, this weeks
clash atMaddingley Parkv Rupertswood
was a must win. With all other games in
McIntyre around the district washed out,
the 6 points up for grabs was a must for the
Bulls. A better batting display this week
saw the Bulls post a competitive score of
8/194 off 40 overs.
Batting - A. Porter 71, M. Sepala 32,
T.McColl 30.
In cold and blustery conditions the Bulls
bowling attack combined well to keep the
Rupertswood batsmen struggling for runs.
All bowlers played their part and were
complimented by some outstanding
fielding and catching with the Bulls
bowling out the opposition for 150.

Bowling - C. McKinley 4/31, M. Ekanayaka

2/ 11, R. Watson 2/30.
The 2nd XI side played Ashfield at Masons
1 with an unusual tie.
Result Bacchus Marsh 8/187 and
Ashfield 3/187.
Batting - D.Closter 45, S. Taylor 41, J. Taylor
34.
Young pace bowler B. Croxford took 2/33.
The 5th XI played Woodend and had a
convincing win at Masons 2, bowling out
Woodend for 118 and claiming victory
with 3/154.
Bowling - D.Maurer 2/9, B. Watson 2/19,
J. Dean 2/28.
Batting - C. Dunn 50 and B.Cracknell a
solid 34.
A special mention to Bruce Thomas as he
celebrated his 300th game at Maddingley
Park on Sunday.

Bacchus Marsh Bowling Club

By Tyler Maher

Results - Round 3 v Trentham

Division 1
Saturday produced a miserable day for bowls, but Bacchus
Marsh werent complaining. At the end of the day they had
ground out a tough victory in the trying conditions.
The 112-82, 16-2 win over Trentham sees them draw within
two points of second place on the ladder after the top of the
table clash between Gisborne and Lancefield was washed
out.
With a clash against Gisborne on the horizon next week, this
gives the Marsh an opportunity to leapfrog their opponents
with a win into a crucial top two position.
This made the victory over Trentham ever more important,
and from the outset the home side were in comfortable
control, and stayed that way for most of the match.
Justin Webster continued his crushing home form with a 2917 win; Craig Norris completed the biggest win of the day
with a 34-17 drubbing and Lenny Kean kept up his brilliant
start in Bacchus Marsh colours with another victory, this
time 27-24.
Phil Minniti was the only losing rink, falling short by just
two shots, 22-24.
Division 2 and Division 3 were both washed out for the
round and sit fourth and seventh on the ladder respectively.
