10/100 Mbps Switched Ethernet

Full duplex, high speed communications between Switches

All interfaces, links and switches are redundant
All stations are directly connected
Flexible topology ( presently bus topology)

maxNET Communications Network

maxNET, the maxDNA dual Ethernet

Network,
interconnects
all
maxSTATIONs and DPUs allowing access
to all plant data.

maxNET
Network
provides
a
10/100mbps
full-duplex
redundant
communication network backbone with
10/100 Mbps interface to each station.
Should a network fail for any reason,
communications will be maintained
over the alternate network. Any cable
failure will cause a system alarm.

maxDNA system also supports printers

located on the maxNET Network that
can be used by the maxSTATIONs. Each
printer is connected to one network
using a network print server (built in OR
through Parallel port) to receive print
information over the Ethernet. One
Printer is connected to only one of the
two Ethernet networks. If redundancy is
required, then a second print

server/printer is connected to the other

network.

Why Use a Ethernet Switch

Increase network bandwidth
Permits simultaneous connections
Connect 10Mbps to 100Mbps networks - speed buffering
Increase physical size of 100Mbps network

(An overall idea about plant

network.)
Communication Media (UTP, Fibre)
This is a one part of networking of plant DCS system apart from
Ethernet switch.

UTP- untwisted pair cable which is used for connection of

OPSTN, Printer, DPU to Ethernet switch as shown in bellow
picture. In other word all maxDNA HMI & DCS Systems,
Ethernet cables (UTP) cables are used to interconnect the
workstations / DPUs through Switches.
Fiber Optic cable is the only medium that is completely immune to crosstalk and EMI
since it uses light to transfer data instead of electrical current .

All Ethernet cabling is redundant (Line A and Line B). Line A cables and Line B
cables should be laid in different trays and should follow different paths. ALSO,
POWER CABLES AND ETHERNET CABLES SHOULD NOT BE LAID IN THE SAME TRAY.
The maximum cable length for a DCS system is to be 100m generally.

OFC are also used for communication purpose in max DNA DCS.
Ethernet multimode optical cable runs must not be longer than 2 KM .

After connection of all UTP cable we must check the following .

1. Does not show communications error .
2. Check that you can see the share folders Custom and MCS in every
maxSTATION
3. Check that all your MAXStations are listed and Networks A & B shows yellow
blinking
4. DPUs in your system should show in health log of all stations.

The network LED for the A & B network have the

following meanings:
Black - Not used while DPU is running (Would indicate an LED failure)
Red - No SBP Messages received on this network for minimum time of several
seconds
Yellow - Heard From Some Station in same domain that fails to report this
station as being heard (And we talked to it before)
Green - Not one of the above (This could include that some stations are not
heard from, e.g. dead) .

RJ45 connectors are used for UTP cable connection.
