INTRODUCTION
Early Christian concepts of cosmology were based
upon the universal scheme formulated by Claudius Ptol
emy, an Egyptian astronomer who flourished in the
second century A.O. He was probably indebted to
Persian astrotheology, Pythagorean mathematical philo
sophy, and Jewish metaphysics for the system which he
developed. He placed the earth in the center of the solar
system because so far as humanity is concerned all
cosmic forces converge upon the globe inhabited by man
kind .
The geocentric or Ptolemaic concept dominated astr o
nomy to the times of Galileo , Copernicus, Brahe, and
Kepler. The researches of these astronomer-mathemati
cians resulted in the establishment of heliocentric as
tronomy. Even though they discovered that the planets
including the earth-revolved around the sun, these
savants also practiced astrology and cast their horoscopes
according to the old geocentric system. Most modern as5
are moved.
The two circles outside the zodiac are referred to in
Genesis as the regions above the firmament. These con
stitute the imperium, and from these descend the heavens
of the fixed stars, most especially the zodiacal constella
tions which enclose the orbits of the seven sacred planets
known to the ancients. Below and within these are the
regions '.'Of the material elements-fire, air, water, and
earth.
To the viewer's left the nine hierarchies are listed in
descending order. At the corners are representations of
the four winds. The complete picture symbolizes the
regions of spirit or the zodiacal hierarchy, regions of the
soul or the planetary system, and the regions of body
