RJs Stable offers horse-drawn

rides for Christmas time

SAUK RAPIDS After

a cold, grueling trip from the
northern highlands of Galilee, along the flatlands of the
Jordan River, and through
the Judean desert, a promised couple expecting a child
found themselves in Bethlehem. Due to the crowded
inns, Joseph and Mary had
no choice but to stay in a
primitive stable surrounded
by donkeys, sheep and other
animals.
The stable found on the
outskirts of Sauk Rapids on
Fifth Ave. NE may not have
a link to the birth of Christ,
but for the last five years,
the sleigh rides provided by
Becky Molitor and Daryl
Sheetz and their draft horses
have easily been associated
with Christmas.
RJs Stables is a boarding facility which houses
just under 40 horses. The
stable began in 1990 when
Molitor remodeled her previous chicken barn into 21
horse-housing stalls. The first
year, Molitor boarded at least
15 horses. Now, the business
has grown to the point where
they have a waiting list.
In addition to caring for
animals, Molitor and Sheetz
are heavily involved with the
Minnesota State 4-H program and are both Minnesota
4-H Western Heritage horse
directors. Molitor has been

competing in horse shows

since she was 13 years old.
The two also offer horse and
roping lessons.
I got my first pony
when I was 5 years old. I
had to beg, Molitor said. A
neighbor had the pony for
sale, and I had to convince
my parents to buy the horse.
It even came with the saddle
and bridle. He was a Shetland
Welsh cross named Rusty. I
kept my first pony until he
passed away. Rusty was well
into his 30s. My children
were able to start learning to
ride on him as well.

After purchasing their
first pair of draft horses in
2010, the stable began offering sleigh and wagon rides to
the community. Draft horses
are bred to be working horses; oftentimes pulling heavy
loads, carts or plows. They
usually stand 16-plus hands
(a horse-specific measurement, one hand equates to
four inches) and weigh more
than 1,400 pounds.
RJs Stables currently owns three pairs of draft
horses, purchasing their most
recent set two weeks ago.
Two of their pairs are Percherons, but their most familiar
pair are two Belgium-Paints
by the names of Jake and
Jim who weigh about 1,800
pounds each.
Although draft horses are mellower and quieter than other horses, each
horse has its own personality.

Sheetz said draft horses are

bred to be hard workers.
Theres instinct in
there. A draft horse has basically the same working
instinct as a working dog.
Those three-year-olds, they
want a job. Standing around
is not for them; they want
something to do, Sheetz
said of their youngest pair of
Percheron draft horses.
Before the Christmas
holiday, people can find
Molitor, Sheetz and their
horses offering rides various
times at Hinkemeyers Tree
Farm, Molitors Quarry Bar
and Grill and other places
scattered throughout central
Minnesota. They offer rides
on their own property, as
well, for family, friends or
employee parties and will
travel to neighborhoods for
caroling festivities or holi-

Horse-drawn rides offer
a therapeutic outing where
people can enjoy the quiet,
and the sleigh bells bring
thoughts of days of old.
Its quiet and relaxing. When the snow is deep
enough and we can use our
sled, the sleigh bells are

peaceful, Molitor said. A

few years back, we had a
family who came with relatives from California. We
rode across a blanket of snow
that covered a hay field.
There were no signs of stubble or grass anywhere; they
thought it was a lake.
But if dashing through

the snow is what youre hoping for, you may be disappointed.

Jake and Jim are not a
lets go, high energy team,
Sheetz said of the near
20-year-old horses. If we are
going for a short ride its one
thing, but if the two are going
to be pulling for four hours,
they are going to take their
time.
Molitor and Sheetz said
they bought their new Percheron team Sydney and
Otis, which are larger and
about half as old as Jake and
Jim to allow their trusty
pair to ease into retirement.
The new team will have a
little more giddy-yup in their
step.
Its going to be interesting to hook them up for the
first time. They are going to
have a lot of action in their
legs, particularly because
they are bred more for show
than for work, Sheetz said
of Sydney and Otis. Jake
and Jim are more farmhands, which were trained
by the Amish. They are laid
back and were trained to drop
their heads and move along.
They arent in any hurry, but
will pull all day long. These
guys [referring to Sydney and
Otis] will have a lot of knee
action and will be more of a
showy, look-at-us horse.
Whether you are looking
for a peaceful ride along the
Minnesota countryside, or
a quicker, more living time
down the streets of town, RJs
Stables will have the draft
horses to allow for a merry
time this Christmas season.

Sausage Cranberry
Stuffing
Serves:12

8 cups lightly packed inch cubes of french

bread
1 pound spicy pork sausage
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
tsp. dried sage leaves
cup dried cranberries
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup milk
2 eggs, beaten
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Spray 9- by 13-inch
glass baking dish with cooking spray. Place
bread cubes in baking dish. In skillet, cook
sausage, celery and onion over medium heat,
stirring occasionally, until sausage reaches an
internal temperature of 160 degrees. Drain.
Add sausage mixture, sage and cranberries to
baking dish; mix lightly with bread cubes. In
medium bowl, beat broth, milk and eggs with
fork until well mixed; pour over bread and stir
gently to soak all bread cubes in milk mixture.
Cover and refrigerate at least 8 hours but no
longer than 12 hours. Bake uncovered 35 to
40 minutes and until golden brown.
