SONGS TO SING AND PLAY

HIYA HIYA

(I have not been able to find a translation for these lyrics.)

To sing it as written, call attention to the melody in measure 3, how one note is higher than the
similar note in measure. A simpler version would be to make measure 3 identical to measure 1.
The whole song could be sung as a call and response, except the last phrase, where everyone
sings together.

For younger students, this song is great for steady beat. Put a gathering drum in the center of a
group of students, each with one mallet. They play on the quarter note beat throughout the

song. Adding wrist bells on the half notes and maracas on the eighth notes makes it more
challenging. Here is a simple Orff arrangement.

BLACK SNAKE

Game: One child hides. All other students march past the "snake's" hiding place until the
snake runs out and tags someone who becomes the new snake.
With the visuals below, I have included two versions of Where are you hiding. One reflects
the melody, but if you chant the lyrics, you could use the visual without eighth notes. For the
same reason, there are two visuals of Dont you bite.

RIDING IN THE BUGGY

Grades 3-5
This one is good for rhythm: sixteenth notes and syncopation. Use the simplified rhythm visuals
on page 17 if you want to isolate those rhythms and add instrument ostinati. For instance, have
students play riding in the buggy with alternating hands on drums and Mary Jane with
woodblocks while singing the whole song. Or, you could play those only during Section A, then
add guiros on the syncopated part Who moan for me every time they sing those lyrics on
Section B.

FALL
FIVE LITTLE PUMPKINS
Chant:
Five little pumpkins Sitting on a gate
The first one said, Oh my, its getting late!
The second one said, Lets dance, lets prance,
The third one said, Now is our chance!
The fourth one said, Lets run, run run!
The fifth one said, Lets have some fun!
When ooooooh went the wind
And out went the light
And the five little pumpkins
Rolled out of sight.
PreK-2nd
Learn the chant over several days. One of the days, pass out laminated pumpkins (see visuals
below) to five children. When you say the first one, that person holds up his/her pumpkin.
Continue through all pumpkins, and at the end, the five pumpkins can slowly twirl around in
place one or twice as they roll out of sight.
Another day, add instruments:
After learning the chant well, have students sit in a circle and put one of the pumpkins on the
floor in front of 5 students. Hand out unpitched percussion instruments (see suggestions
below).

First one: play hand drum (on the beat) while saying oh my its getting late
Second one: play woodblock on lets dance lets prance
Third one: play tambourine on now is our chance
Fourth one: play maracas on lets run run run
Fifth one: play guiro on lets have some fun
ooooh: play triangle or wind chime
out: Have a student turn off the light.
Last 2 lines, students put their instruments down on the pumpkin cards and pass them
to the next 5 students in a circle.

Idea: print the pumpkins on orange construction paper or decorative scrapbook paper.
Children could also color the pumpkins.

DANCING AND WHIRLING

Basic chords:

This one is also good for teaching rhythm: syncopation and dotted quarter notes.

More interesting chords:

Dancing and Whirling Dance Steps

One formation: Students in a circle
Verse
Repeat this pattern four times

Variations on the clap:

clap over head, to the right or left
wave a scarf instead of clap
bethsnotes.com 27

Other formation: students scattered around the room, girls on side of the room, boys on
another, all facing front.

First time: take two steps toward the right until students are facing the side wall.

Second time: take two steps toward the right until students are facing the back wall.

Third time: take two steps toward the right until students are facing the other side wall.

Fourth time: take two steps toward the right until students are facing the front again.
(Over the four times that pattern is repeated, the students will have turned around 360 degrees
until facing the front again.)
Variation:
Sing the verse twice. The first time, the girls do the steps while the boys wait. The
second time the boys do the steps.
Sing the verse once, but girls go first with larger steps. They do two steps and end up
facing the back, then two more steps until they face front again. Boys do the same.
Refrain
Sing the refrain twice.
If students are in a circle, do a right hand star the first time, then a left hand star on the repeat.
If students are holding scarves, they can hold their scarves in the middle of the star.
Variation: Circle right, then left. If students are holding scarves, they can grab each others
scarves instead of hold hands.
If students are in the boy / girl scattered formation, the boys do a right hand star / circle, and
the girls do a separate star / circle.
