School Resource Officer Procedures

The following policy supplements the School Resource Officer Agreement to guide officers in
defining best practices in dealing with situations officers are likely to encounter.

SROs should not engage and/or physically restrain students for school administrative violations. SROs should not be
involved in school discipline.
Upon being notified of an incident involving a child younger than 10 years of age or a child above the age of 10 with a
mental disability, the SRO will reque5t school staff immediately notify the students parents and request they come to
that location as soon as possible to perform their parental duty and take custody of the child.
SRQs should not intervene with students who receive special education services for administrative violations or
behavioral modification unless its to protect the safety of the child or others. The restraint must be limited to the use
of such reasonable force as is necessary to address the emergency. Restraint must he discontinued at the point where
the emergency no longer exists.
When dealing with children under the age of 10, SROs will only intervene as a last resort after all other resources have
failed including school staff and/or parent. The SROs intervention will be limited to assisting the school staff or
parent upon their request solely for the protection of the child and/or others.
If in possession of a body worn camera an SRO will activate the camera as soon as practical upon being notified of an
incident involving a student. The camera will remain activated until the situation is resolved or the officer is no longer
involved.
SROs will complete a written report (General Inquiry) to document any incident requiring an officer to restrain or
become physically engaged with a student when no criminal violation has occurred.
