Pre-assessment Instruction Plan

3rd Grade
Marisa Dawson
Standard: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.4
Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division
equation relating three whole numbers.
CCSS.Math.Content.3.OA.A.1
Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 7 as the total
number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe
a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 7
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in
situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities,
e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown
number to represent the problem.
Objective: Students will be able to find the product of twelve
multiplication problems using dice and word problems with 75%
accuracy.
Materials: Product sheet, dice, game pieces, pencils, paper, math book
of choice.
Attention Getter: Get to know the children. Ask them what they like to
do. Ask them what they like about math and what is hard for them in
math. Then read a fun math book to them to create a positive learning
mind for math.
Teach: Give each child their own product sheer, dice, eight games
pieces, pencil, lined paper. Explain the following:
The game consists of finding the product of the two numbers on
the dice and then finding the product on the sheet and putting a
game piece over it.
When some one gets four in a row we start the game over.
Roll the dice and then right down the two numbers on your
paper. Model you roll a 6 and a 5 write down 6x5=30.
If you dont know the product, write down the equation and we
will come back to it after three games.
If you have time, use the game pieces and have them do a couple
story problems
Closure: The ones the children missed have them circle and then as a
group discuss what the answer is and why.

Assessment: Look for how many problems the children are missing.
Use the data to make a chart. The children who did not get 9 correct
need more practice to obtain 75% accuracy.
