Reed City to honor Brad

Shilling, all fallen soldiers
REED CITY In a quest to
honor her brother, Brad Shilling,
Melissa Shilling plans to deliver
a statue to the Reed City Depot on
Nov. 19, on the 10-year-anniversary of his death.
Her tribute to her brother really is to all the fallen soldiers
in that war, said Reed City City
Manager Ron Howell.
The six-foot tall statue will be
placed at the Reed City Depot
until a memorial park is established.
City officials recently solicited
residents thoughts for a memorial park, such as where it should
be located and what should be
inside of it. No one responded to
the request.
Council member Dave Scharlow said the city would be proud
to have the statue.
Melissa originally reached out
to the city to help get a statue.
Yet, she opted to do fundraisers
to raise money for the statue to
honor her brother.
I think its a wonderful expression by Melissa for her brother,
Howell said. It was a real sincere effort.
The event is set for 2 p.m. at the
Reed City Depot. Everyone is invited to attend.

There will also be a costume

between 7 and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29. Al Weinberg said
the event will have more scenes
than last year and be more
elaborate.
We had a lot of community
support, Weinberg said.
The cost is $5 per person and
it is recommended for upper elementary students and older, but
they wont turn anyone away. It
takes about 30-minutes to walk
through the park. The tours are
guided.

Because of construction,
Weinberg recommends entering
the park off of 80th Avenue.
Proceeds from the event go to
the Evart Parks and Recreation
Department and to support the

Admission is $5.

Reed City youth sports gets field

Sports group volunteer
offers his property to
city for brush disposal
By Tereasa Nims
Weekly Voice

REED CITY A local sports

organization is gaining ground
this week as the Reed City
Youth Sports organization is
preparing to clear city-owned
ground for next years football
practice while paying $15,000
for the advancements.
The city council recently
approved the organizations
request to lease less than three
acres of city-owned property
that was being used for city
brush collection. The citys
property is adjacent to property the organization owns on
225th Avenue.
Reed City City Manager Ron
Howell said some council members were worried about having a place to dump the brush
and the sports board worked
to find another place. One of
their youth sports board members stepped up and donated an
acre and a half of his hunting
land for the city to disperse the
brush on.
I think you will be pleased,
said Reed City Youth Sports
member Greg Windquist,
about what the property will
look like when done. Windquist
worked with the council on a

contract.
The Reed City Youth Sports
organization owns approximately 10 acres, including a
parking lot, said Steven Wessels, Reed City Youth Sports
Board member. The group is
also using adjacent property,
which they dont own but have
permission to use for a practice field. That property is
now for sale, leaving the group
searching for an alternative
practice space.
Wessels said the goal is to

flatten the hilly land the city

owns and clear the brush from
it. The city was using the area
to store brush.
We would remove the hills
and plant grass, Wessels said.
Wessels said the organization is planning on investing
$15,000 into making the space
usable. They want to use the
practice field for Rocket football and would like to incorporate soccer use.
Howell said the area soccer
teams are looking for practice

areas. He said should the lease

be approved, maybe the two
groups could join forces and
share the financial contribution.
Wessels said he is open to
that and the board is looking
at making the space viable for
soccer, eventually.
Eventually thats what were
working to do, Wessels said,
to build a big enough space to
accommodate soccer and football. Our focus right now is on
Rocket football.

What WAS It?

As the electric cord suggests, the device in our

photograph hailed from an
earlier era. Whats more,
this piece of equipment
itself wasnt controversial
but what it contributed
to very much was.
This is a 1920s electric
curling iron used to create
those distinct waves in the
very bold and radical step
of choosing the revolutionary short hairstyle that
swept the world and ignited tremendous uproar:
the bob.
Irons like these were not
necessary to create the
deep waves they just made
it easier and waves (known
as Marcelling) were not
essential to an authentic
bob, but definitely added a
distinct 1920s dimension.
In fact ours is not the first
era in which curling irons
are cordless. However back
then instead of utilizing
fuel cells hidden in the
handle, theirs were heated

directly on the stove.

While the pictured version of an electric iron
came into play by the 1920s,
the variety requiring a
stove was still in use into
the 1950s. Prior to the bob,
hairstyles had universally
relied on longhair, upswept
and feminine.
Women were seen to be
embolden with the bobbing
of their hair.
There were reports of
debilitating medical conditions erupting in the wake
of the choice. It is said
that smelling salts accompanied many a woman to
the barber shop once shed
decided to sever her long
locks.

At court in England, many an upper crust woman

who had chosen to bob,
would add a hair extension when in the presence
of their royal majesties,
simply to avoid a radical
display of short hair.
Heard of a bobby pin?
They were invented to aide
in the fashionable bobbed
hairstyle of the 20s and
continue on the shelf as an
essential tool-of-the-trade
today.

Have you ever seen a rabbit riding a bicycle?

A two-headed lizard? A purple porcupine

bristling with quills? There colorful folk
creatures called alebrijes (al-uh-BREE-haze) are
created by artists in Mexico.
Alebrijes can be big or small, simple or
complicated. Many are familiar animals such
as bears, zebras, cats, and snakes. Others are
fantastical creatures such as dragons and
unicorns.
Alebrijes artists also carve crucifixes, tiny
pieces of furniture, and masks. They make
skeleton figures for one of Mexicos most famous
holidays, the Day of the Dead.
Artist Zeny Fuentes began carving alebrijes
when he was five years old. He recalls, My
parents and grandfather were my teachers, and
I remember that my first piece was a duck.
Today Zeny works with his own five children
and his wife to create hundreds of alebrijes
every year.
Most alebrijes are made from freshly cut wood
of the copal tree. Before he begins, Zeny studies
each piece of wood carefully. He uses his

figure will come out of the wood. Then he picks
up a large blade called a machete and begins to
carve.
After the carving is complete, the figures are
set in the shade to dry. Zeny and his family
treat the wood to protect it from insects and
from any splitting or cracks. Next they apply six
to eight layers of paint to form a base coat. Then
the final painting can begin.
Each alebrijes is painted with wonderful
designs and symbols. Some of these are just
for fun. Others have been passed down throw
Oaxacan families for generations.
Zenys wife, Reyna, decorates the alebrijes.
Zeny and his family are Zapotecs, people who
have lived in this part of Mexico for centuries.
So Renya includes many Zapotec symbols on the
alebrijes. These portray life. The value of human
beings, and Zapotec religious beliefs.
Zeny sells his familys alebrijes to collectors
all over the world. People have come to love this
unique craft that celebrates a proud culture.

with the 2018 tax levy.
Shall the currently authorized millage rate limitation of 22.1148 mills ($22.1148 on each
$1,000 of taxable valuation) on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property,
except principal residence and other property exempted by law, in Evart Public Schools,

is a renewal of millage that will expire with the 2018 tax levy)?
