How to Set Up
1. Unpack the case carefully
2, Pull out catch levers (74) on each side
of cabinet and ft off top.
3. Remove all fastenings and paper that
hold the different parts during transportation,
especially the rubber band which holds the
Feproducer weight
Get access to inside of lower case by
raising: table (upon which machine rests) at
the front, high enough to allow supporting
Tink (7§) at the inner leit hand side, to drop
into the eateh,
3. TAKE OUT THE PADDING UN-
DER SPRING BARREL (60 and while mo-
tor and gears are exposed and in full view,
apply a drop of phonograph oil to friction felts
(64) which come in contact with brass gor-
emor dise (66) to cach center of the govern~
or shaft (67) and other bearings. Be sure
that there is no excelsior between the teeth
of the gears, especially hetween the teeth of
the fine governor pinion (65) and large gear
(63) that engages the governor pinion, A
little vaseline applied to this fine gear (63)
is beneficial
6. Before closing lid of eabinet, set. the
phonograph in motion by pushing the starting
lever (71) towards the left, and observewhether the small belt tightening: pulley (61)
Which holds the belt at proper tension, is
revolving. Apply a drop of oil to each side of
the pulley, but keep belt and pulley face free
from oil. Place horn erane base into holder
‘on botiom of cabinet as far as it will go. Next
put the brace in slot in top of cabinet and then
pas upright supporting rod of hom crane
through the hole in brace and into the socket
in the crane hase. Close the lid of eabinet by
holding it up at front with right hand and
pushing supporting ink (75) off the catch pin
swith the left hand, Lower it gently
7. Clean off with soft cloth all upper parts
ff the phonograph and wipe oi back rod (13)
and top of straight edge (72): apply naw and
siccasionally afterwards a few drops of phono
‘graph oil to back rod (13) and straight edge
(72) but first always wipe off dust and gam,

Screw piviots (0), intermediate gear studs
(87) and (77). cylinder shaft pivot (82) anil

8. Raise reproducer asm (68) and push in
Tift bation (69) so that the tift button stem
ests on top of straight edge and slide repro-
ducer arm (68) to the leit as far as it will go.
Reproriucer_ arm should always be wp when
phonograph is not in operation. Push cated
levers (74) into place against sides of case,
{insert crank (62) through the thimble hole on
tight side of case and on winding shaft (73).
AS the screw end of the winding shaft enters
the sleeve of the crank, tart crank to the Fight
until serewerl up tight, and keep timing to
the right as long as it cant be turned, thereby
winding up the motor spring. To take off
winding cranks, turn crank to the Teft, when it
will unscrew and come off,
Insert chain rod of horn crane into the up-
per end of support rod as far as it will go and
hhang horn on the hook at end sf chain. Place
the suber horn connection on small end af
horn as far as it will go and over the tube of
the reproducer (76) having the outer end of
chain rod opposite the center of cylinder,
How to Operate
Place the record on tapered cylinder (23) —
(jitle end to the right), push it om as far as it
\will go with some pressure, Next stavt motor,
by pushing starting lever (7x) to the left as
fur as it will ga, slide reproduces asm (68) t0
the point where the record begins and let 2e-
producer arm down by pulling out button (69).
This engages iced nut with the thread of feud
screw, and also brings the sapphize point of
reproducer (76) in contact with surface of
record, When reproducer his traveled to the
end of record, raise up reproducer arm and
stop phonograph by pushing starting lever(17) to the right. Then stide reproducer arm
(68) to about the center of cylinder by push-
ing ic towards the right, ani take off record
with right hand. To play another secord,
repeat above operation.
Adjustment of Speed
All master records from which Edison rec-
rds are made are recorded at a speed of 160
revolutions per minute, and to reproduce these
records perfectly, it is absolutely necessary
that the phonograph should run at the same
speed (169 revolutions per minnte) ; no more,
no less,
Eyery phonograph is adjusted to run 160
revolutions per minute, but if, by accident or
through carelessness, the governor should be-
come displaced on pinion shait, or the speed
adjusting screw (70) undetneath the top plate
should be turned (whereby the speed wonld
be altered after the phonograph leaves. the
iactory), readjustment of speed can be made
by raising up table and by taking hold of
speed adjusting serew (70) between thumb and
forefinger and turning to the left to make the
cylinder rim faster, and to the right to make
the cylinder run slower. To determine the
proper speed, place a strip of paper inside of
the record and let it stick ont at the end. Start
the motor, and count the revolutions when the
record is playing.
When pniting in the reproducer, the over
hanging weight should be passed through the
‘opening first, and the cup will then enter the
seat, Extreme care should he exereised in
placing the small slot in outer rim of repro-
ducer cup over the stnall pin which will be
found in the upper edge of the seat in the
Feproducer arm, The reproducer should be
pushed down, and the knurlheaded screw
tightened,
The Standatd Model TE Phonograph is
ecuipped with a model “N” Reproducer which.
plays the Amberol (Fonr-Minute) records
aly
General Information
Sometimes the phonograph may repeat oF
tremble. This may be caused by the record
being loose on the eylinder, in which case a
slight push at the end of the record will fasten
it, or the reproducer weight may be caught.
In this case, raise the reprorucer arm (68) and
drop it gently. This also fappens when the
phonograph ip set on a table or other surface
that is not perfectly level, which allows the
reproducer weight to lean toward the lower
side, It is therefore important that the phono-
‘graph be set on a level surface, If the phono-
graph should not run steely, apply a drop of,
oil to feed screw (79), the feed screw pivots
(So), intermediate gear stud (87), change
gear stud (77), cylinder shait pivot (82) andhhole in cylinder shaft bushing serew (81).
Back rod (13) and straight edge (72) should
also be cleaned and oiled. Also look at belt
(44) as it may have run on flange of the pul-
fey, which would vetard the motion, After @
time the belt may become too long, 20 that the
reach of the idler pulley cannot keep it at
proper tension, ‘Then a new belt is required,
If gears become noisy, put a little vaseline on
the teeth. Above all, keep the phonograph
clean, as the mechanism will not work properly
unless free from grit. Always keep the eabi-
net top on the phonograph when not in opera~
tion, to prevent dust from accanttlating on the
working parts, Do not leave recortl upon
cylinder (25) of the phonograph for any
Jength of time when the phonograph is not in
mie,
With every phonograph we furnish a small
Brush for Keeping the reproducing sapphire
point clean, The sapphire point should be
eleaned about once a wel:
Handling Records
While nat necessary, itis desirable to handle
Edison records by inserting two fingers in one
‘end aiid spreading the fingers apart.
Records may be kept in the felt lined. boxes
in which they come packed, or may be kept in
oxes of cahinets made for that purpose, which
have perpendicular pegs at fixed distances, to
prevent records from coming in contact with
De a
one another, Phey should be placed over these
gs with the tite end wp.
For oiling phonograph, use phonograph oil,
which cam be purchased from sil dealers
