Clothes: They wont be found in

retail stores. The hoodies and
vests were designed by
Mrozek and a Toronto
clothing manufacturer.

When you talk to Barb Mrozek, you can

sense her excitement about the presents
in this years Santa Fund boxes. Her voice
drops to a whisper when she mentions
a particularly exciting toy and she
smacks her lips when she talks
about the candy.
As director of Toronto Star
Charities and Philanthropy, Mrozek
oversees every single item that goes into
those brightly coloured boxes, which
contain holiday presents for kids 12 and
under.
The packages 45,000 of them
annually are delivered to children in
the GTA whose names have been given
to the Stars Santa Claus Fund by various
social service agencies.
For the first time, Mrozek worked with
manufacturers to create special clothing
that cant be found anywhere else. She
reads every book to make sure they are
age appropriate and she throws the toys
around to test their durability.
Basically, its a little comfort and joy
for the kids, Mrozek says about the
boxes. The items may seem basic to
some but if a family is struggling
financially, barely able to put food on the
table...for these families (the items)
could be very difficult to replace.

Hats and mitts: Mrozek

wanted to offer more colour,
vibrancy and variety this year. She
chose funky designs for older kids
and hats with ear-flaps and chin
straps for younger children.
Mitts: Made of a nylon fabric with
Thinsulate, the mitts are warm and
have a longer cuff so they can be
tucked inside.
Gloves: Older children receive
gloves; Mrozek tried to co-ordinate
them with the hats.
Candy: The candy is peanut free.
Even boxes for babies contain
some candy. Its for mom or dad
because they deserve a treat too,
says Mrozek.
Books: Board books, paperbacks
and hardcovers were all purchased
from Scholastic. Popular titles
include Clifford books, The Subway
Mouse and Ms. Frizzles Adventures In
Imperial China.
Socks: Pastel socks with traction
strips for children aged 1-3; sports
and thermal socks for older kids.
Toothpaste: Two types one with
Superman on the packaging and
another thats bubblegum
flavoured.
