The use of GIS and GPS technologies in assisting municipal

waste management
Alam Flora has been used GIS and GPS technology since August 2008
in order to ensure their activities are in schedule. How the technology
works? It works by using the method of Automated Vehicle Locating
System (AVLS), which has the same function with vehicle tracking
where this system remotely monitor and pinpoint the location of all
vehicles that utilises Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to
located and determine the geographical location of a vehicle and
transmit the information.
This technology is useful not only for the client but also for the
employee because they can easily monitor whether the vehicles driver
is doing according to their schedule. Long time ago, we realize that
there are too much complain from client that complained the truck
waste management usually didnt come on time and always delayed in
dong their collection of waste.
There are other useful data that can be ascertained which is driving
speed, driving hours, vehicle travelling distance, and direction. Which it
can be calculated easily using GIS function. These digital data are
important to reduce unnecessary idling time that means they want to
reduce fuel consumption, faster collection rate, and identify vehicles
that are due for maintenance.
The vehicles are equipped with geo-fencing capabilities whereby an
alert will be generated if any vehicle were to go over a pre-determined
area.

2. The use of GIS in implementing EIA

GIS is used in EIA process to improve different features, mainly related
to the data storage and access, to the analytical capabilities, and to the
communicability of the results. The development of such a system will
allow a more realistic approach to the environmental descriptors and
better understanding of their interrelationships.
GIS usually required in 5 of 10 stages in EIA, start with baseline
studies, alternatives, impact prediction, impact assessment, and
mitigation. As I mentioned before, GIS is needed when it related to data
storage and also analysis. All of these stages are related to the data for
the project that required EIA.

Project example: the EIA for dam construction on the Man River, Gujarat,
India.
This project has been performed EIA using GIS and remote sensing. In
this project a study attempts to assess the present problems of the
area and provide suggestive measures for the watershed improvement
of the Man River after the construction of the dam. Various information
layers were integrated through the GIS software Arc/Info using overlay
methods. Suitable site selection for different types of treatments, using
the criteria rules of Arc/Info has also been performed.
The study is carried out by combining the features of satellite imagery,
topographic sheets and secondary maps data to produce the
necessary information layers of natural resources. The input data are
translated into the thematic maps by the methods of interpretation,
classification, manipulation, integration, editing and analysis.
The GIS and Remote Sensing is used to generate thematic maps of
various natural resources, integrate the thematic maps and define the
plan of implementation

From the analysis of GIS, they can forecast that an area of 17.55
sq.km is going to under submerge due to the construction of the dam
on the Man River and they also have successfully completed the study
suggesting the treatments along with some preventive measures for
reducing soil erosion in the catchment.
From this example we can conclude that GIS is very usable and
needed in EIA because it can assist the process of EIA in fast and easy
way as well as we can gain better understanding towards environment.
