Dear ASLRT Friends and Colleagues:
Welcome to beautiful (and perhaps wet at this time of year) Vancouver, Washington!
We are excited to host this years ASL Round Table: A Legacy of Language and
Literature. Washington School for the Deaf (WSD) is home of the Terriers. You may
know this dog as a small breed, but it is also tough! We pride ourselves in taking a
strong stand in the world of Deaf Education. WSD has been engaged in school-wide
discussions about the importance of teaching ASL in addition to the traditional content
areas for the last several years. We know that studying ASL, a language that is rich in
heritage and beauty, leads to strong bilingual individuals that have a positive self-image.
Understanding how the study of ASL fits into a bilingual educational environment is
critical to the success of schools like ours. The annual ASLRT provides a unique
opportunity to discuss and discover common successes and challenges, and to benefit
from excellent speakers and presentations. The ASLRT conference planning committee
has enjoyed planning and preparing for this years conference for you. It is our hope
that you leave with a burning desire to try something different or tackle a new project
when you return to your school. Enjoy the conference and the beauty of the Pacific
Northwest!
Sincerely,

Superintendent
