Serviee Learning #1 Date: January 22, 2014 Child 310 ‘Your Name: Marisa Dawson Service Learning Site: Kennedy Elementary School ‘Supervisor: Brother Rane Service learning experience summary: We started in the gym for snack time and each class sat at their own table interacting with one another. After that we went to a classroom that had small desks and chairs, a place to hang coats and backpacks, books, and cabinets with activities and snacks in them. ‘There ‘was plenty of space for the children and teachers to move around and do activities, There were seven adults and nine children. | was asked to sit next to a child and help them with their homework when needed. The children had a schedule where they changed doing things in a certain amount of time. Homework was the first thing they worked on. The children where able to play outside and we were allowed to interact with them and play with them. We could read them books. They were positive in responding to new people and weren't afraid to talk to you as if they had known you for a long time. 1 helped one little git] with homework and just asked her questions as she asked me questions (such as, ‘what are your three favorite colors?) Developmental description/assessment 1: I am focusing on the cognitive domain, Sarah is five years of age. She was able to focus well on her task and responded with ease to my questions, which is typical (p. 409), She loved learning from her main teacher and listened to her teacher explain what she did wrong and have her correct it. Sarah would understand the directions received and correct it. She remembered what was asked of her, and completed her task. Her language was atypical (6-7 years), and she showed her love of solving problems demonstrated through her homework (p. 526). Developmental description/assessment 2: Focusing on the physical domain, Sarah seemed the normal hheight for her age but was very small otherwise. She used an adult pencil grip, which is typical (p. 409, Berk) and loved to write her name and numbers. She also galloped out ofthe room, which is typical (p. 309). She functioned as a normal child physically. Developmental description/assessment 3: Focusing on the social/emotional domain, Sarah seemed to keep to herself but loved to talk to adults. She didn’t immediately go out to play, but wanted to work on her own, or with her teacher, on her homework. She asked me questions that showed she was able to receive knowledge about other people, this is typical (p. 409), She saw herself as capable but seemed insecure when playing with other children, especially when they had music and dancing time this seemed ‘more atypical because she demonstrated milestones in 6-7 years of age (p. 526). She sat away from ‘everyone else but slowly moved her chair closer to others. Personal assessment: | feel that my strengths in interacting with Sarah were I was able to make her feel comfortable and safe so that she could be herself. 1 was able to ask her questions that were fun and that related to her. [ feel I could improve on js'not being afraid to be involved. Sometimes I would just stand there and wait until I was directed to know what to do,
