Red Cross seeks
volunteers
The American Red Cross
Volunteers at Van Wert
County Hospital are currently
seeking new volunteers.
The hospital volunteers are
trained to assist in 17 differ-
ent areas of the hospital and
medical center. Volunteers
are also cross-trained so
that the volunteer has the
knowledge and skills to
assist in other job positions.
American Red Cross vol-
unteers also assist annually
at the Health Aware Fair.
As a group, the volun-
teers donate between 6,500
and 9,000 hours annually.

DELPHOS — Since April
20, people from all over have
been scrambling to help clean
up the oil spill in the Gulf
of Mexico as the pollution
threatens not only aquatic life
but life on land as well, not to
mention the environment.
There are many ways to
help out and Sherry Subler of
The Animal House Boarding
Kennel has found a way that
suits her.
“Dog hair naturally soaks
up oil, so they’re collecting
as much as they can to help
clean up the oil in the water,”
she said. “I run a dog groom-
ing service here, so I’m in a
position to help.”
When June 16 rolls
around, Subler will pack
up the hair and send it in
to Matter of Trust’s Excess
Access Program, a program
that uses materials that are in

up oil. Simply tossing thou-
sands of pounds of hair into
the gulf would be counter-
productive.
“They pack the dog hair
inside the pantyhose and put
that in the water to soak up
the oil. It doesn’t matter if the
pantyhose have been worn,
or have holes or snags; they
just have to be clean,” Subler
said.
Subler says she found out
about the program when she
came across the information
on the Internet.
“I saw they were col-
lecting dog hair and
became interested in help-
ing because every year we
go to Marco Island, Fla.,”
she explained. “I was con-
cerned about the oil coming
up onto the beach there and
back into the gift shop and
say, ‘Do you remember me?’
“We do. I like that.”
Customers like them
will make it difficult for the
Tiemans to close the park at
the end of the season. After
three years of consideration,
the couple decided to close
this fall so Len, 63, can
retire.
“I’ve got a few years left,
and my wife and I want to do
some traveling,” Len said.
The Tiemans plan to pack
the park’s two dozen or so
dinosaurs into storage and
close up Mystery Hill cabin,
a shack that defies gravity
atop a hill in the park.

“This is going to be our
first shipment,” she con-
tinued. “They have limited
space in their storehouses
down there. They said they
would e-mail me when they
have the space for it. I’ll have
to ship it out (Wednesday) no
matter what, though, because
that’s the deadline they gave
me.”

“If any other groomers in
the area want to get involved
that would be great,” Subler
added.
“We’re not interested in
selling it at the moment,”
Len said.
Instead, the couple plans
to enjoy the woods, which
are filled with wildflowers,
a variety of trees and birds,
and spend some more time
with their children and 14
grandchildren, three of whom
are working at the park this
summer.
Their decision, which they
announced through advertise-
ments by marketing this year
as the park’s last season, has
been hard for regular visitors
and locals to accept.

increased activity as residents
enjoy the outdoors. Children
play, the city pool fills up
with residents of all ages and
families go on picnics.
Because of increased
insect activity, bug repellent
is part of many such activities.
However, warmer months are
often viewed as opportune for
home maintenance projects,
drawing a certain segment of
the population “out of the
woodwork.”
Residents are warned to
beware of con artists who
prey on homeowners dur-
ing the summer. Van Wert
County Sheriff Stan Owens
says they usually go door-
to-door and make offers that
are indeed “too good to be
true.”
“We get transient painters
come through and want to
paint barns, barn roofs, grain
bins and that sort of thing.
They offer to blacktop drive-
ways and make offers that are
too good to be true. One guy
offered to do a driveway for
$85, then presented the cus-
tomer with a bill for $385 and
claimed he never told him
$85. They especially like to
pull these kinds of things with
the elderly and people just
really need to be cautious,”
he said.
Owens said another tactic
is to ask for a portion of a bid
up front and not show up to
complete the job.
“Sometimes, someone will
promise to do a job but need
a certain amount up front.
They get the money, then
they never show up again. It
happens in the summer and
people need to be careful with
who they deal with,” he said.
Customers should never
pay with cash and feel free
to check with the Better
Business Bureau if hav-
ing doubts about a contrac-
tor. The sheriff recommends
checking with several well-
respected businesses when
kids in before it closes,” Len
said. “It’s the memories. I’d
say 30 percent of my busi-
ness is people who come
back every year.”
He declined to release how
many people visit the park
each year. Business is still
good, but not as good as in
past decades before children
became enthralled with video
games and TV, he said.

Ottawa River
watershed
Memorial Day marked the
official beginning of summer
for Ohio’s recreational boat-
ers and anglers. It also kicked
off the watershed study season
for Ohio EPA’s water quality
teams.
This summer, Ohio EPA
staff will be collecting water
and sediment samples, sur-
veying fish and aquatic insect
species and evaluating habitat
in the Ottawa River water-
shed, primarily in Allen,
Hardin and Putnam counties.
The information they gather
will reveal details about the
health of the watershed. The
field work is the first step in a
federally required study called
a Total Maximum Daily Load
(TMDL). A TMDL is the
maximum amount of pollut-
ants a water body can receive
on a daily basis without vio-
lating water quality standards.
In addition to the Ottawa
River, staff will study tribu-
tary streams including Hog
Creek, Sugar Creek and Plum
Creek. Communities in the
watershed include Lima,
Elida, Kalida, Ada, Lafayette,
Cridersville and Columbus
Grove. The Ottawa River is a
public drinking water source
for Lima.
The survey will collect
key physical, biological and
chemical data to determine
the sources of problems in the
watershed and develop options
for improving stream quality
in degraded areas. For more

gram and Ottawa River study,

During the TMDL pro-
cess, Ohio EPA will work
with local governments and
citizens groups. A number of
public meetings will be held
during the two- to three-year
process to discuss findings of
the study and gather public
comments on potential solu-
tions to water quality issues.
Samples will be collected
from many sites, some more
than once. Ohio EPA employ-
ees carry a photo ID and will
request permission from pri-
vate landowners if access to
their property is needed. For

AKRON (AP) — A jury
has recommended the death
sentence for the killer of an
Ohio police officer shot dur-
ing a routine traffic stop.
The same jury in Akron that
convicted 25-year-old Ashford
Thompson of Twinsburg last
week recommended today that
he face the death penalty.
Judge Elinore Stormer will
sentence Thompson on June
23 in the slaying of 33-year-
old Twinsburg officer Joshua
Miktarian in 2008. The judge
could reduce the sentence to
life.
Prosecutor Sherri Bevan
Walsh says she agrees with
the jury’s recommendation,
calling Thompson a cold-
blooded killer of an officer
who was doing his duty.
Regulators
dispute claim
over egg safety
COLUMBUS (AP) —
Ohio regulators are disputing
a claim by the Human Society
of the United States, which
alleged that farms in the state
are producing 350,000 eggs
a year that are contaminated
with salmonella.
The Ohio Department of
Agriculture says data indicate
that Ohio farms produce about
35,000 bad eggs annually, a
tiny percentage of the 7 bil-
lion eggs produced here each
year.
State lab director Dr.
Beverly Byrum credits the
agency’s quality testing pro-
gram. Although the program
is voluntary, about 95 percent
of egg producers participate.

September 11th — that’s when the world
changed.
At least that’s what I’ve been told. It seems
everyone forgot what the world was like
before that day. There were still wars fought
over petty things. People in Africa were still
dying. People lived beyond their means. People
were still materialistic. People in Middle
America believed this country was founded on
Christianity and not religious freedom. Before
September 11th Iran, Iraq and the Middle East
existed even if people in this country couldn’t
point them out on a map or had heard of them.
Democrats and Republicans still meant people
who argue a lot without really accomplishing
a thing. Politician’s even then used God’s
name to become elected and line their pockets.
Corporations were still more interested in their
numbers then the damage they cause to nature
and people. People still believed warriors for
Christ wasn’t an oxymoron. Radical Islam
still used Nazi propaganda from World War
II to stir up anti-Semitism. The education and
judicial system still limped along at a catatonic
rate. There was still racism. There was still
crime. People really thought that Leave it to
Beaver was how America was in the 1950s.
And the French were still the French.
Now it’s 2010 and I stand on the verge of
graduation feeling completely unhopeful. The
economy is terrible and our country shows no
signs of improving. The only thing that has
changed since 9/11 is that I don’t have to wait
for a future job to drain me of my idealism
and naivety: our country, our leaders and our
cultures inability to learn from the past have
done it for me.
People in this country can tell you who
won American Idol or what happened on Lost
(even I’m guilty of this) but not who won
the Nobel Peace prize. People obsessed with
celebrities and athletes who in the over all
grand scheme of things do not matter. Where
logic and science is mocked but religion elects
or rejects leaders. Where face value trumps
moral character and the world becomes all
about who you know not what you can do.
A country where public schools drop teach-
ers and programs associated with the arts but
never high school sports.

or air. Many fishermen from
our area consider this their

— Stranger than South
Carolina’s politics is the
nearly nativist pride many
take in its nastiness.
Not the good folks of the
Palmetto State, but rather
the politicos who work dili-
gently to manipulate the sort
of voters who, for example,
would elect Alvin M. Greene
to the U.S. Senate.
Who? Good question.
The Democratic mystery
man who was nominated
to run against Republican
Sen. Jim DeMint seemingly
materialized out of nowhere,
without any evidence of hav-
ing had a campaign. Greene,
an unemployed veteran dis-
charged from two branches
of the armed services — and
under investigation for alleg-
edly showing lewd images
to a University of South
Carolina student (a charge
he denies) — reportedly paid
the $10,400 filing fee out of
his own pocket.
So strange is the emer-
gence of Greene, whose
numerous post-election
interviews have gone viral
on the Internet, that fel-
low South Carolinian and
House Majority Whip James
Clyburn has requested an
investigation into his politi-
cal rise.
“Something was going on
in South Carolina that was
untoward. ... I couldn’t quite
put my finger on it,” said
Clyburn.
Truer words.
South Carolina
Republicans, meanwhile,
called for the resignation of
state Sen. Jake Knotts for
calling gubernatorial can-
didate Nikki Haley a “rag-
head” a few days before the
primary. The race was either
the nadir or the zenith of
high jinks politics, depend-
ing on one’s point of view.
Let’s just say that the ques-
tion “How low can you
go?” isn’t strictly rhetorical
around here.

the slur was a joke. More
likely it was a strategic move
to broach the religion issue
and implant the idea in vot-
ers’ minds that Haley might
be a Muslim. It was a cal-
culated risk that in another
political cycle might have
served him well.
Not this time. Racial
and ethnic slurs today are
political suicide in South
Carolina.
Haley shot to the top of
the ticket, in spite of two
men’s claims that they each
had a romantic interlude
with the candidate, a mar-
ried mother of two.
While the rest of the
nation reeled in indignation
-- or guffawed at the Comedy
Central punch line that
South Carolina has become
— natives shrugged. Thus it
has always been. But why is
that, exactly? When does it
stop? More to the point, does
anyone really want it to?
Many invoke the
famously dirty-dealing Lee
Atwater, who apologized to
some of his targets as he
was dying of brain cancer.
But Katon Dawson, the for-
mer state Republican chair-
man who was defeated by
Michael Steele for national
party head, theorizes that
the state’s dirty politics can
be traced to the American
Revolution:
“General Francis Marion,
aka the ‘Swamp Fox,’
started it with untraditional
warfare against the British
by attacking, inflicting mas-
sive damage to the enemy,
and then retreating into the
swamps and backwoods of
South Carolina. This is a
part of our heritage that still
goes on in modern political
campaigns. ... We all have a
little of the Fox in us — and
proud of it.”
Be that as it may, some-
thing shifted in South
Carolina this time that has
gone largely unnoticed. The
big story, says Dawson, isn’t
the alleged affairs, the ethnic
slur or the mystery candi-
date. It is that voters rejected
dirty politics-as-usual and
the old boys’ club.
Haley defeated a list of
veteran politicians, includ-
ing Attorney General Henry
McMaster (who deserves
an award for gentlemanly
behavior).
And down here in the
Lowcountry, where the
Civil War began, Tim
Scott, an African-American
Republican, outperformed
two of the most power-
ful names in the state’s
political history for the 1st
Congressional District seat
— Carroll Campbell III,
son of the late Gov. Carroll
Campbell Jr., and Paul
Thurmond, son of the late
Sen. Strom Thurmond.
Scott and Thurmond will
square off in a June 22 run-
off.
Though Haley fell slightly
short of the 51 percent need-
ed to win the nomination, and
faces Rep. Gresham Barrett
in a runoff, she trounced her
competitors in part because
voters rejected the nastiness
that motivated the attacks
against her.
For her own part, Haley
told me that her biggest con-
cern was that her attackers
made her state look bad.
“I want the country to
know we’re not a bunch
of ignorant rednecks down
here. And the vast majority
of South Carolinians do not
think that way.”
If this kind of thinking
prevails, Jon Stewart may
not have South Carolina to
kick around for much lon-
ger.

WBL stars soar past NWO Texas holds the

end of the 11th annual Van
Wert County Hospital All-
Star Football Clash between
Northwest Ohio (Midwest
Athletic Conference and
Northwest Conference teams
combined) versus Western
Buckeye League Friday night
— after a 2-hour, 50-minute
marathon, the teams had com-
bined for a record-
setting 708 yards
passing and 50-of-96
passing.
The teams were
headed by two of the
area’s most pass-hap-
py coaching staffs:
Kenton for the WBL
and Ada for the small schools;
employing no-huddle shotgun
spread offenses.
The WBL All-Stars also
won their fourth game
in the installment, rip-
ping the NWO 40-25
behind 22-of-46 pass-
ing from Shawnee’s
Dillon Risser (just
a yard shy of the all-
time personal mark
of 352 set by Crestview’s
Matt Perkins). However, his
six touchdown tosses set the
mark and he connected with
nine different receivers on the
night, led by Kenton’s Daniel
Lombardo with five
grabs for 75 yards.
Jefferson’s Jordan
Jettinghoff threw 44
times and completed
24 for 338 yards,
with three scores and three
picks. However, he was also
sacked eight times for minus-
47 yards as the NWO was
held to minus-7 yards rush-
ing. He found Lima Central
Catholic’s Desi Kirman 12
times for 184 yards.
The big schools got it
going on the third possession
of the game. The NWO Aaron
Swaney (Allen East) stopped
a WBL drive deep in NWO
space (the 3) but a pick by
Defiance’s Alex Nofziger set
the hosts up at the 16. From
there, Risser faked a double
reverse and found Aaron
Swanson on a drag from the
left side to the right and hit
him in stride, taking him to
the sideline and the pylon.
The 2-point run failed for a
6-0 WBL lead at 6:50 of the
first period.
The NWO took three plays
to travel 65 yards in retali-
ation. At the 41, Jettinghoff
threw a screen to Kirkman
coming from the 4right side.
He kept going, battled threw
several tacklers for the next
20 yards and finally escaped,
finishing with a 50-yard jet to
the end zone. Swaney
made it 7-6
with 5:56 on
the clock.
The rest, as
they say, was
WBL history.
The NWO
did have a goal- line
stand later in the first as St.
John’s Mitchell MacLennan,
playing strong safety, chased
down Shawnee’s Josh Tuck
(3 grabs, 89 yards)
at the 3 to keep him
from complet-
ing an 80-yard
TD catch and
run. They forced
a fourth-down
incompletion at
the 7 to take possession.
However, the WBL drove
75 yards in five plays on
their next possession. The
clincher came on a 46-yard
Risser pass to a wide-open

Elida’s Dakota Bechdolt
recovered a muff on the kick-
off ,setting the WBL up at the
Now 39. Six plays later at the
10, Risser threw a perfect slant
pass to Nofziger (3 grabs, 60
yards) in the end zone. Risser
found Lombardo for the 2 and
a 20-7 advantage with 10:41
showing in the half.
The NWO turned the ball
over on downs at their 38,
leading to a quick 2-play tally.
At that spot, Risser rolled right
and connected with Lombardo
down the right side for the six.
Elida’s Derek Cunningham
ran for the 2-pointer and a
28-7 spread with 9:36 show-
ing in the half.
The NWO replied with a
14-play, 65-yard sojourn —
overcoming an early personal
foul — that ate up 3:34 and
closed the scoring for the half.
Jettinghoff went 6-of-12 pass-
ing (75 yards) and finished
it with a 20-yard TD toss
to Kirkman, a jump ball he
caught in the right side of the
end zone. However, Swaney
missed the conversion to leave
the score 28-13 with 6:02 left
in the half.

JJ Yeley hoping to make a splash back on Cup scene

Yeley thought he’d be back
before now.
When Yeley was
replaced at Joe Gibbs
Racing by Kyle Busch
following the 2007
NASCAR season, the easy-
going driver from Arizona
thought he’d have little trouble
finding a team clamoring for
his services.
Young driver. Good looks.
Engaging personality. Solid
results. What’s not to like?
He landed on his feet —
sort of — at Hall of Fame
Racing in 2008 but found him-
self out of a job barely halfway
through the season.
And just like that, the phone
stopped ringing.
Part of that was by choice.
Yeley figures he could have
found a ride or two with a
team just hoping to qualify
for a race and then pull off the
track at the first opportunity.
They’re known as “start-and-
parks” in the industry, field
fillers mostly. It wasn’t a pal-
atable option after spending
two years driving full-time for
one of NASCAR’s top teams.
“I had a lot of people say
‘Stay away from certain cars
because then you get tagged’,”
Yeley said.
So Yeley tried to wait it
out, figuring eventually the
economy would turn around.
A year passed. He hung out at
home with his young daugh-
ter and grabbed a handful of
Truck Series starts as a favor
to a friend.
Yeley’s perspective
changed after he crashed while
Kansas. He barrel-rolled at
least eight times by his count
and was knocked out for a few
moments.
When he came to he felt a
pain in his neck. He thought it
was nothing. He was wrong.
X-rays revealed a fracture
in his C-4 and C-5 vertebrae.
The doctors gave him two
options. He could wear a brace
for six months and let it heal
naturally or he could have sur-
gery and cut his rehabilitation
time in half.
Guess which he chose.
After wearing the brace for
a couple weeks, he had surgery
and was back ready to race by
the fall.
Suddenly, the idea of driv-
ing for a fledgling operation
didn’t seem so bad. Panic had
a little bit to do with it. The
injury combined with his time
away from the garage made
him feel invisible.
“People tell you if you’re
not there, you’ll be forgotten,
but until you actually experi-
ence it like I did, I would have
never realized that it happened
that quick,” he explained.
So instead of staying home
and waiting for the phone to
not ring, he started showing
up at the track. And instead
of waiting for some team to
approach him with a deal, he
approached sponsors in hopes
of selling himself as a package
deal to any interested owners.
It’s a long way from his
days at JGR, where all he had
to do was shake hands and hop
in the car. Not anymore. He’s
OK with that.

Too bad. Yeley can spin a
yarn with the best of him. His
Twitter account is an entertain-
ing unfiltered glimpse into the
mind of a competitor who feels
he can still get out there and
race with the best of them.
And it occasionally breaks
news, too. Yeley inadvertent-
ly spilled the beans when he
wished Brian Vickers a speedy
recovery after the Red Bull
Racing driver was hospitalized
with blood clots.
He’s busy meeting with
potential sponsors and try-
ing to jell with the crew at
Whitney Motorsports.
Yeley replaced Terry Cook
for Dusty Whitney’s first-
year operation in Darlington.
Yeley’s now 4 for 4 in making
the Cup field since his debut.
His next goal? Getting the
No. 46 Dodge — bought from
Ray Evernham — competi-
tive.
Yeley has finished just one
of his four starts. And yes, he
admits there’s an irony that the
guy who didn’t want to drive
for a “start-and-park” is now
doing just that. Yeley ran 40
laps during last week’s race at
Pocono before heading to the
garage.
He tweeted that he was
“like a baby” when he left the

this weekend at Michigan.

If so, Yeley better get
ready. He discovered how out
of shape he was during the

running the entire race after

The points deductions knocked

32nd to 36th in the standings and

Team co-owner Bob Jenkins
took responsibility for the “uninten-
tional” mistake and plans to appeal
the penalty. The violation was dis-
covered following a rain delay in
Sunday’s race. Kvapil’s rear tires
were almost flat and NASCAR dis-
covered that the valve stem caps
on the tires had been altered to
allow air to gradually leak out — an
act that would help the car with its
speed during a long run.

voice never stopping, the jokes
and stories flowing almost stream-
of-consciousnessly.
Force went out to the masses at
least a half-dozen times, squeez-
ing in face time between checking
up on his Top Fuel funny car,
his daughter Ashley’s, son-in-law
Robert Hight’s, youngest daughter

and the day-to-day machinations
of his massive race team.
Force had work to do — there’s
always work to do — but he couldn’t
break free from the fans, always
circling back, leaving him with pre-

BP’s Gulf failure made worse by PR woes

HOUSTON — BP is already fighting an
oil gusher it can’t contain and watching its
mighty market value wither away. Its own
bumbling public-relations efforts are making
a big mess worse.
Not only has it made a series of gaffes —
none greater than the CEO’s complaint that
“I’d like my life back” — the company hasn’t
even followed its own internal guidelines for
damage control after a spill.
Executives have quibbled about the exis-
tence of undersea plumes of oil, downplayed
the potential damage early in the crisis and
made far-too-optimistic predictions for when
the spill could be stopped. BP’s steadiest
public presence has been the ever-present
live TV shot of the untamed gusher.
What BP has lacked, crisis management
experts say, has been much of a show of
human compassion.
“All crises are personal,” said Richard
Levick, who runs a public relations firm,
Levick Strategic Communications, that
advises companies. “Action and sacrifice is
absolutely critical.”
The best move for BP’s image, of course,
would be to stop the leak. That has proved
difficult enough, with one fix after another
failing and estimates of the severity of the
spill growing by the week.
Failing a solution, Daniel Keeney, presi-
dent of a Dallas-based PR firm, suggested
putting CEO Tony Hayward in a hard hat and
life vest, helping crews contain and clean up
the spill.
“You want to get him right in the thick of
things, even if he looks somewhat uncom-
fortable doing it,” Keeney said.
Levick suggested BP could have cut gas
prices at its stations along the Gulf Coast — a
show of financial solidarity.
BP has taken a stab at soothing angry
Americans, airing a slick, multimillion-dollar
national TV spot this week in which Hayward
pledges: “We will make this right.” Hayward
also promised BP would clean up every drop
of oil and “restore the shoreline to its origi-
nal state.” President Barack Obama said the
money spent on the ads should have gone to
cleanup and compensating devastated fisher-
man and small business owners.
And even those efforts violate the compa-
ny’s own prescription for damage control. Its
own spill plan, filed last year with the federal
government, says of public relations: “No
statement shall be made containing any of the
following: promises that property, ecology or
anything else will be restored to normal.”
On top of everything else, BP can’t figure
out what to say about its dividend. Lawmakers
in the U.S. insist the company must look after
the devastated people of the Gulf before pay-
ing its shareholders. But in Britain, legions of
retirees count on the steady payouts.
And earlier this week when Wall Street
freaked out over the prospect of billions of
dollars in BP liabilities and sent its stock
to its lowest point since the mid-1990s, the
company response was positively tone-deaf.
“The company is not aware of any reason
which justifies this share price movement,”
the company said early Thursday, after its
stock was hammered on New York and
European exchanges.
Almost from the beginning, BP has been
as unable to control its public message as it
has the spill itself.
Hayward was ridiculed for telling report-
ers “I’d like my life back” earlier in the crisis,
remarks the families of some of the 11 men
killed in the explosion of the Deepwater
Horizon rig felt were insensitive. He also
suggested that the environmental impact of
the spill would be “very, very modest.”
Former Shell chairman John Hofmeister
said it might have been more appropriate for
senior U.S. executives of the company to
take the heat. Hayward is an Englishman, and
BP is based in Britain.
“I think it was a mistake for Tony Hayward
to come and put his physical presence in the
U.S.,” Hofmeister said. “The U.S. has its own
culture and traditions. Foreign companies can
come and do business there, but they are not
necessarily welcomed.”
BP’s chief operating officer, Doug Suttles,
an American, was rolled out for interviews,
but his aides grumbled Hayward was stealing
the spotlight. Hayward’s decision to present
a video explaining BP’s “top kill” attempt
took the company’s Louisiana command by
surprise.
As for Suttles himself, he insisted this
week that there were no massive underwater
oil plumes in “large concentrations” from
the spill. To NBC, he offered that it “may
be down to how you define what a plume is
here.”
The government had said three tests con-
firmed oil as far as three-fifths of a mile below
the surface of the Gulf, at least 40 miles away
from the site of the gushing well.
Suttles also predicted the spill would be
reduced to a “relative trickle” by early next
week. BP later sought to walk the comments
back, saying the company was optimistic but
that getting the spill to a trickle would take
more time.
By late this week, the government had
reported that the spill was spewing the equiv-
alent of the Exxon Valdez disaster into the
Gulf every two weeks or less, with the catas-
trophe nearing the end of its second month.
Since the April 20 explosion, BP has
parachuted its own staff, plus staff from at
least two independent public-relations firms,
to deal with the deluge of round-the-clock
media inquiries.
Early on in the crisis, BP and government
officials held daily in-person briefings with
media, allowing questions. In recent days
and weeks, officials have increasingly
resorted to teleconferences with reporters
and have limited the ability to ask questions
and the number of questions that could

The Tiemans began paint-
ing and refurbishing the dino-
saurs — all of which were gray
— and building new ones.
Tieman shapes Styrofoam into
the dinosaurs’ bodies, cov-
ers them with fiberglass and
paints them.
His life-sized creations
include the plesiosaur — a sea
monster like the fabled Lake
Erie Bessie that will soon sit in
the water by the volcano at the
front of the park — an orange
dinosaur that stands upright
and has short arms and a long,
thin neck, and Irene and the
babies, a mother green dino-
saur and several little ones
around her.
“We did this for the kids,
mainly,” Len said. “I like to
watch the kids laugh and gig-
gle and see them happy.”
Mystery Hill is a favorite
of older children and teens,
Denise said. The cabin is built
on an angle, and staffers dem-
onstrate on tours how water
runs up hill.
She remembers walking
through the cabin with a realtor
before buying the park. Afterward,
she felt dizzy and sick.
“I said, we have to tear that
down,” she said.
But when the couple’s
teenage boys and their friends
checked it out and gave it
glowing reviews, she changed
her mind.
“I said, we’ll see if any-
body else likes it,” she said.
“It’s been really popular.”
Prehistoric Forest also has
been a favorite with movie
buffs. It garnered fame in the
1995 movie “Tommy Boy,”
which was set in Sandusky
and partially filmed in
Marblehead.
In one scene, Chris Farley
and David Spade see a
Prehistoric Forest park with a
dinosaur by the sign.
The film helped boost busi-
ness somewhat because the park
often has customers who ask if
it is the same one that appeared
in the movie, Len said.
“I can’t say for sure,” he
said. “A lot of folks come in
and want to get their picture
by the gate because of the
movie. It’s a riot.”
Port Clinton native Chuck
Grindstaff remembers being
one of the kids who found the
Mystery Hill fascinating. He
went to the park at least once
a summer.
“I remember the strange
force you felt,” he said.
Now 53, Grindstaff is sad
to see the attraction close.
“It’s always been there my
whole life,” he said. “It was a
big part of my life.”
The park’s closure is
a big loss for people who
enjoy roadside attractions,
said Doug Kirby, publisher
of RoadsideAmerica.com, a
web site that offers informa-
tion about unusual attractions
across the country.
“We think of that one as one
of the classic dinosaur attrac-
tions,” he said. “It’s a double
loss with Mystery Hill.”
Kirby remembers when his
organization visited Prehistoric
Forest in the late 1980s. At the
time, visitors rode around the
park on a tram and fired toy
rifles at the dinosaurs, he said.
“That was very popular,”
he said.
Although those who seek
unique attractions will be dis-
appointed the park is closing,
Prehistoric Forest isn’t the last
roadside attraction, he said. In
fact, new ones are popping up
around the country, he said.
“There are a lot of dino-
saur parks around,” he said.
“Dinosaurs have been popular
since the ’90s after ’Jurassic
Park’ came out. They kind of
had a nice resurgence.”
Still, Kirby hopes
Prehistoric Forest opens again
someday.
The Tiemans’ monster
creations will continue, Len
said. He plans to keep build-
ing dinosaurs in his workshop
at the park.
“There is a market for
these,” he said. “I’ve had peo-
ple ask me to make some for
their yards so they can put
them in their gardens.”
One woman asked him to
make wall-mounted dinosaur
heads, like the one found in
the park’s gift shop, so she
could add them to her chil-
dren’s study.
“I’m going to be doing dif-
ferent things,” he said. “It’ll
be hardest next year when the
park would have opened.”

Prosecutors said the
Dutchman, who was taken to
a segregated block of an east-
ern Lima prison, acted with
“ferocity and great cruelty” in
killing 21-year-old business
student Stephany Flores in
his hotel room after they met
playing poker.
Van der Sloot remains the
lone suspect in the 2005 disap-
pearance of U.S. teen Natalee
Holloway on the Caribbean
resort island of Aruba, and
Peru’s criminal police chief
says the defendant told inter-
rogators he knows where her
body is.
Aruba’s attorney gen-
eral, Taco Stein, told The
Associated Press on Friday
he is skeptical Van der Sloot
was telling the truth about
Holloway’s body. He said
Aruban officials will decide
whether to sent investigators
to Peru to question him once
they learn exactly what he is
offering.
Lima Superior Court
Judge Juan Buendia issued a
detention order before dawn
for Van der Sloot on the
murder charge. He was first
taken with other prisoners in
an armored truck to Lima’s
judicial palace, then alone to
the maximum-security Castro
Castro prison.
Police manhandled Van
der Sloot as they ushered him
to the judicial palace, a scarf
around his neck and his hands
cuffed behind him.
The more virulent catcalls
and bile — the sensational
case has dominated Peru’s
news for a week — came
from onlookers as he was
taken from the prosecutor’s
office where he had been held
since Thursday. One onlook-
er threw spoiled lettuce.
Police say Van der Sloot
brutally murdered Flores
three days after meeting her
at a casino. He broke her
nose, strangled her, threw
her to the floor then emptied
her wallet and drove away
in her SUV, said Gen. Cesar
Guardia, chief of the criminal
police.
The 6-foot-3 (190-cen-
timeter-tall) Van der Sloot
took about $300 worth of
Peruvian currency, two credit
cards and Flores’ national
ID card, Guardia said. He
said the suspect abandoned
her car in a lower-class Lima
neighborhood before fleeing
south to Chile by bus.
If convicted on the murder
and robbery charges, Van der
Sloot would be sentenced to
between 15 and 35 years in
prison, court spokesman Luis
Gallardo told the AP.
“The aggravating factors
are having acted with feroc-
ity and great cruelty,” said
a news release issued by the
court that announced the
charges.
At Castro Castro prison,
Van der Sloot was fed the
Peruvian chicken dish “seco
de pollo,” prisons director
Ruben Rodriguez said.
The Dutchman will have
his own cell in a small block
near the director’s office.
Rodriguez said Van der Sloot
asked to be put in a cell
by himself because he fears
other inmates will kill him.
The only other two prison-
ers on the block are a reputed
Colombian hit man charged

trained to protect citizens in
the most dangerous situations.
As a former Marine, he was
credited with saving lives in
Iraq.
But in the months before
he robbed a suburban bank —
capping what authorities say
was a three-week stretch of
smaller holdups — the father
of two was so overwhelmed
by financial problems, a sick
daughter, anxiety, and night-
mares that he “just wanted to
die,” according to a document
filed Friday in federal court.
Federal defender Andrea
George is asking U.S. District
Judge Patrick Schiltz to give
Carson the minimum seven
years in prison, and five years
supervised release, for his
guilty plea on counts stem-
ming from the bank robbery,
saying he needs psychologi-
cal treatment, not a lengthy
prison sentence.
Prosecutors are seeking at
least 9 1/2 years in prison,
according to a March plea
agreement.
Carson’s family mem-
bers, including his wife, have
declined to be interviewed. A
spokesman said in a Friday
e-mail that the family was
reviewing the document.
Carson’s January arrest left
many wondering how a once-
respected officer could turn
his gun on the public he swore

indicates he was a tormented
