INTRODUCTION
This Documentation is addressed to qualified technical personnel who have experience with Selca
S4000 series numeric controls and Windows based operating systems.
The objective is to ensure the connection and configuration of S4000 NC on Microsoft networks (typically
WINDOWS NT, WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS 2000, WINDOWS 9x or Unix systems configured as
Microsoft network servers).
The Microsoft network connection option for S4000 series system is called SELNETWIN4000.
Only the numeric controls for which this option has been purchased can be used for network
configuration and connection.
The procedures herein described are independent from the NC software version used and only employ
dialogues and menus of the operative system which

IN CASE OF INTERVENTION OR TAMPERING ON Windows NT BY NON-AUTHORIZED PEOPLE,

SELCA WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR POSSIBLE PROBLEMS OR WRONG BEHAVIORS OF
THE NUMERICAL CONTROL.

The Numerical Controls S4000, Export Version E excluded, are subject to export controls according to Appendix I of the
EU-Dual Use regulation.

1. S4000 Network Connections

1. S4000 NETWORK CONNECTIONS

1.1 CONNECTIONS
The currently used CAD/CAM milling system generates increasingly large files. This can cause
problems when transferring the files from one system to another if a communications network is not
available. For this reason, many users are asking to connect their machines to an Ethernet network.
Very often they realize this need only after purchasing the machine tool.
All S4000 systems are equipped with an integrated fast Ethernet network board which supports 10Mb/s
and 100Mb/s connections.
The SELNETWIN4000 option is necessary to connect the CNC to a network.
WARNING! If the optional module is not installed, the CNC can be configured to access the network
but will be disconnected when the CNC logs off. The configuration will be reset each time.
Connection to the network must be made using a double twisted shielded wire, (preferable S-FTP
shielded foiled twisted pair) class 5, minimum conductors 24AWG and RJ-45 connectors (8 wires 4 pairs) shielded.
The connection to the NC network board is made by inserting the connector in the system RJ-45
socket on the lower side of the metal cover on the back of the NC video unit.
The maximum length of the NC wire to the concentrator (HUB) must not exceed 100 m.
For correct operation, arrange the wire as far as possible from sources of electromagnetic noise (at
least 30 cm). Use network components providing adequate immunity. The NC and the other
network devices must be connected to an equipotential earth circuit to avoid the passage of
undesired currents through the wire shielding. Data transmission may be slowed down and even
blocked in extreme cases in the absence of this precautions.

The manufacturer will arrange the machine to be connected to the user's network or provide for laying
the wires at a later time.

1.2 MACHINE TOOL PRESETTING FOR ETHERNET

NETWORK CONNECTION
Very often, users realize that they need a network connection after purchasing the machine tool. This
is not a problem if the manufacturer has set the machine up to be connected to the user's network or at
least has provided space for installing wires. If this space has not been provided, the communications
network installer will be unable to reach the video unit CPU by means of wiring inside the machine and
forced to use ugly, unreliable temporary connections.
Note the route of the cable: from the factory system hub, a Cat 5 shield cable (preferably S-FTP
shielded foiled twisted pair) must lead into an electrical cabinet through a dedicated hole or socket
(separate from the power wires) and reach the operator panel where the numeric control PC socket is
located.
We stress that shielded wires and connectors must exclusively be used to make the wiring aboard the
machine tool in order to minimise interference with surrounding electromagnetic fields.
To provide a radical solution to this problem, SELCA offers a special type of cable studied to satisfy the
most demanding conditions of use in workshops: oil-resistant, anti-friction, certified flexibility sheath for
mobile laying, also in cable trays, and a complete range of accessories for making the connections.
Commercial codes and descriptions are provided below.
CV-RETE:

ETHERNET CAT 5 cable for connecting control panel

and electrical cabinet with oil-resistant, anti-friction
shield for mobile laying. Required length available.

CON-RETE:

CONNECTION TYPE
Regardless of the type of wire used, the wiring section inside the machine must be pin-to-pin, i.e. the
connectors on both ends of the wire must follow the same arrangement of the wires. See figure below.
There are two possible cases:

The CNC connected to a pre-existing network hub: in this case, the CNC wire from the hub
must not be crossed, i.e. the wire arrangement must be respected on both ends, possibly following
the standard color arrangement (see table above - T568B wire).

The CNC connected directly to only one computer (point-to-point network):

in this second case, the interconnection must be crossed. In other words, the signals of the TX+
and TX- pair on CNC end must cross the RX+ and RX- signals on PC end. Connect the other
wires with the same wire arrangement on both ends.

with
the
SELNETWIN4000 option, consists of a board
(SE315) on which there is a component marked
NW and a management chip in a fixed position as
shown in the picture.
SE315

The SE315 key board must be inserted in the upper part of

the central unit rack, more precisely in the second slot from
left to right as shown in the picture.

If the SE315 board is already present on the CNC, it

is necessary to mount the NW key on it.
In order to verify the presence and the correct

2. CNC Configuration with Windows 2000

Firstly, specify an IP address and a subnet mask which univocally identifies the NC on the network; this
data must be supplied by the administrator of the network to which you are connecting.
In the case of small networks not connected to the Internet, the IP address can be in range from
192.168.10.1 to 192.168.10.254 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Typically, the first three numbers of
the address will be the same and the fourth number will be used for univocal identification.
When a DHCP server is present in the network, you can select the "Obtain an IP address via DHCP"
option to obtain the connection address directly from the server.
The Gateway typically has to be configured only in large networks.
These procedures require specific technical knowledge and are not included in this manual.
WARNING: Do not delete or edit any other protocols which may be present in addition to
TCP/IP.
Press OK" to confirm selections.
You will be prompted to reboot the system. If the CNC software does not boot up correctly, shut the
system down again and switch the machine tool off by operating the master switch. The problem will
be solved at the next boot up.
Having ended the procedure, the CNC (with user privileges) can access the network server resources
and share the part program folder with other PCs (after setting up file share). See the following
paragraphs for details.

2.3 FOLDER SHARING AND DISK MAPPING

There are essentially two ways to exchange data between CNC and PC:
Load CNC programs into the "Part program" folder from the PC connected to the network: you will
need to share the D:\S4000\Partprog directory in this case.
Access shared programs from a PC connected to the network and transfer files to the CNC from the
latter: in this case you will need to map a network disk.

2.3.1 SHARING PROGRAM FOLDER

Use Windows Explorer to share the "Programs" folder. Press Windows logo + <E> to start Windows
Explorer.

Point to the D:\S4000\PartProg directory, either right-click the mouse or press Application key (on the
keyboard between the left Windows logo key and the CTRL key). Select Sharing.. in the pop-up
that appears. (See figure below)

4. NETWORK ACCESS AUTHORIZATIONS

"User" level authorizations are required to access the resources of various servers in Microsoft
networks.
Some of the most common cases which typically occur when exploring the CNC SELCA S4000
network are illustrated below.

4.1

SERVER WITH WINDOWS 95 / 98 / WINDOWS ME

These operating systems do not have particular security levels. No user recognition is used to access
the system and the folders are immediately accessible.

4.2 SERVER WITH WINDOWS NT / 2000 / WINDOWS XP

Network access security is more stringent in these operating systems. This means that authorizations
are required to access shared resources of these systems by the SELCA CNC. Users must be
recognized (i.e. they must have an "account").
The following window will appear when a user attempting to connect is not automatically recognized:
The SELCA CNC network user account is:

User Name:

UtenteFinale

Password:

Selca

Specifically, you will need to create a new user corresponding to the SELCA CNC on the server to map
a network disk on a server in these operating systems. THESE ACTIVITIES MUST BE CARRIED OUT
BY THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR.
WARNING:

The password and user name are case-sensitive. Remember to note upper and lower

FUNCTIONAL CONNECTION TESTS
The TCP/IP protocol must be correctly configured to test connections regardless of authorizations on
user level. Use the Ping diagnostic command to call a server IP address.
You can check if the connection and protocol are correctly configured and running according to the
reply.
To run the Ping command: open MS-DOS Prompt on the CNC (Start, Programs, Command
prompt) and enter the Ping command followed by the server IP address.
Example:
C:\>ping 172.18.6.67 and press Enter to confirm.

Example of correct connection:

If the reply to the Ping command is similar to that shown below, the called computer is replying
correctly and the connection is up and running:
