A. DEFENITION

ACTIVE VOICE AND PASSIVE VOICE

Active sentence (active voice) is a sentence in which the subject of his

doing the work, by contrast, passive (passive voice) is a sentence in which the
subject of his work by the object subject of the sentence. Active voice is more
often used in everyday life than the passive voice. However, we often find the
passive voice in newspapers, articles in magazines and scholarly writings.
Passive voice is used as the object of the active voice is information that is
more important than its subject
Active voice is when the subject of a verb performs an action the verb is said
to be in the active voice. The effect of the action may or may not fall on an
object, that is, the verb may or may not have an object.

Passive voice is When the object of a verb appears to perform an

action so that the effect of that action appears to fall on the subject the verb is
said to be in the passive voice.
B. Formula about Active voice and Passive voise
Example 1 .:
Active: We fertilize the soil every 6 month
Passive: The soil is fertilized by us every 6 months
a. Object of the active voice (the soil) became the subject of the passive
voice
b. Subject of the active voice (we) become the object of the passive voice.
Note also that there is a change of subject pronoun 'we' to object pronoun
'us'.
c. Verb1 (fertilize) the active voice becomes verb3 (fertilized) in the passive
voice
d. He added that be 'is' in front verb3. Be used is dependent on the subject of
passive voice and tenses are used.
e. He added that the word 'by' behind verb3. However, if the object of the
passive voice is not considered important or unknown, then the object is
usually not addressed and so does the word 'by'.

f.

Especially for sentences progressive (present, past, past perfect, future,

past future and past future perfect continuous, it is necessary to add 'being'
in front verb3). If it is not written "being", tensisnya will change, not
progressive / continuous again. Note the examples

Example 2:
Active: Hanbin mailed the package
passive: The package was mailed by Hanbin
The formula of Active Voice:
Subject

+ Verb + Object

Hanbin mailed the package

The formula of Passive Voice :
Subject +
The package

Be + Verb 3+ Object
was

mailed

by Hanbin

Note :
Be : am,is,are,was,were,has been,have been,will be,etc
The Past Participle : follow Be for regular verbs
C. Passive Voice Simple Present Tense & Past Tense
a. Passive Voice Simple Present Tense

b) People make books from trees.
c) We study English
whereas if the sentence is converted to the active voice passive sentences voive
then:

The formula simple present tense passive voice :

If the passive voice sentence above example we want to change it to a

sentence NEGATIVE then we simply add a "NOT" after the "TO BE" so the
result will be like this:

S + To Be + Not + V3
a)
b)
c)
d)

I am not treated like a baby by my parents .

Books are not made from trees.
English is not studied by us
Our grandmother is not visited by us every 2 months

And if we want to change the example above sentence into a sentence in the
form of questions, then we simply move the "TO BE" to the beginning of the
sentence so that the result will be like this:

To Be + S + V3
a)
b)
c)
d)

Am I treated like a baby by my parents ?

Are Books made from trees?
Is english studied by us ?
Is our grandmother visited by us every 2 months?

Unlike the case with the use of simple present tense auxiliary verb
(am'is'are '). Passive in the simple past tense by the auxiliary verb 'was' or
'were'. 'Was' is used to subject the singular (I, She, He and It), and 'were' is
always used for plural subject (You, We and they).

the first book in 2005.

1. Someone left the letter when he was away from his desk.
2. Someone stole my friends car yesterday

Subjek + was/were + Verb 3

For example:

+ was/were + V3

The first book

was
printed in 2005 by Donghyuk.
Other examples:
1. The letter was left when he was away from his desk.
2. My friends car was stolen by someone yesterday
3. Some poems were written by Deby last month
If you want to change the above examples of passive sentences into
negative sentences, then you simply add 'not' after 'was' / 'were'

Subjek + was/were + not + Verb III

1. The letter was not left when he was away from his desk.
2. My friends car was not stolen by someone yesterday
3. Some poems were not written by Deby last month
If the example of the passive voice to be changed into the form of questions,
then you just move 'was' / 'were' at the beginning of the sentence.

Was/were + subjek + Verb III + ?
