I am going to walk around the room and give each of you a square of construction
paper. I will ask you what color you want. (In hands be holding a stack of colorful
construction paper and at the bottom of the stack is plain white paper. Walk around to
each student in the room. If the child is a girl, say, Oh you are just a girl, you get white.
Then if the student is a boy, say, Well, what color would you like? Oh yes, you made a
great choice. Continue this without discussion about what is going on until each child in
the room has a paper. As you pass out the paper, watch the looks on their faces and listen
to the conversations.) Does everyone now have a square?

Activity:
What are you thinking? Is this fair? What is wrong with the way I gave out the papers?
(Girls, No its not fair! Why do the boys get to pick their own color? Boys, This cool!
I like this!)
Lets talk about this. Girls, why do you think this was not fair? Boys, why did you like it?
(Using oral discussion, openly debate why it is not fair for the girls not to have a say
about the type of paper they were going to use.
Ask the boys their opinion about the situation regarding the papers. Allow the girls to
discuss their feelings.
