What is Counselling?
Counselling is a one-to-one relationship, an interaction between two persons, with a view to
fostering change and growth where needed. If a counsellor is to be helpful to clients, she/he
must function at a higher level of personal effectiveness than the person who has come for
help, or both will flounder.
It's not a case of one person feeling or acting superior and thinking she/he has the ability to
solve other people's problems.
Counselling is NOT problem-solving or giving advice or telling people what they should do. It
is listening with an understanding heart to a troubled fellow human, empathizing,
responding, discussing the issues raised by the client, helping him/her to see what options
he/she has and to set his /her own goals; the ultimate goal of the counsellor being to
enable the client to decide how best he /she can handle his/her own situation.
"Effective counselling, then, is an enabling (i.e., freeing) and helping relationship, in which
the counsellor's personal qualities and skills encourage positive growth in the client".
