Title: Using Supplementary Video in Multimedia Instruction as a Teaching Tool to Increase

Efficiency of Learning and Quality of Experience
Author(s): Milos Ljubojevic, Srecko Stankovic, Vojkan Vaskovic and Jelena Vaskovic
Summary- The purpose of this research was to determine if the use of supplementary videos in
multimedia teaching was efficient. The main focus of the group of researchers was to prove that
using apps familiar with students would increase their engagement. The research was conducted
on college students with low-level prior knowledge. The results of the research showed that
using videos may help to improve effective teaching and learning as well as lecture organization.
Analysis of the Method- The experimental method was used to conduct the research. There
were 46 students used for the research. Students were given questionnaires to complete, which
showed their prior knowledge of the topics covered. Students willingly participated under the
condition that they would receive extra credit for their participation. Videos were displayed at the
beginning, in the middle and at the end of the educational material. Students were given
assessment questions to answer. The method was very simple, practical and easy to follow.
Summary of the Results- The results proved the group of researchers right. Using
supplementary videos proved to be efficient in the classroom. The results were based off of test
questions and results. Showing the video in the middle of lecturing proved to be more effective.
The students were more motivated which resulted in their learning increasing.
Critique and Reflection- This article and its results were very interesting and informing. I use a
lot of supplementary video with my young students. It keeps then actively engaged and I find
that sometimes the video conveys the message better than me or an activity I may use to teach a
lesson. We live in an age where children watch a lot of TV and interactive content on tablets,
computers, etc so it makes sense to use it in the classroom.
What I found most interesting was the fact of the timing of when to show videos. I normally use
videos at the beginning of the lesson to introduce a topic and then I will follow up with my
teaching. The research yielded that showing the video in the middle of the lesson proved to be
more efficient in keeping the students engaged. When I reflect on how this may be effective in
my class, I think I can agree. I could open up the lesson with an engaging hook then use the
video in the middle to keep students attention.

Title: Multimedia Teaching with Video Clips: TVs, Movies, Youtube, and mtvU in the College
Classroom
Author(s): Ronald A. Berk
Summary- This article was centered around research conducted on using videos and movie clips
in college courses. The use of videos in the classroom has increased and this research gives
supporting claims as to why. Berk found that videos can have an effect on the way students learn
and how their brains process information.
Analysis of the Method- Because using videos in the classroom is not a new concept, Berk
instead created best practices for teachers to use. With the use of surveys and observations, he
was able to create different methods of how to use videos to optimize teaching and learning. I
think the article does a great job of expanding on particular topics and then suggesting a video
that can be used in correlation.
Summary of the Results- Using videos in the classroom is not a new concept. Berks review
helped to find define guidelines for using technology in teaching as well as choosing the right
video clips to support teaching and learning. There were 12 techniques to help achieve a positive
outcome of using technology in the classroom. He also wrote about when, how and why you
should use certain video clips as well as using students ideas and suggestions to help them
become an active part of their learning.
Critique and Reflection- I think this article was very helpful. I like how it was practical and
gave video suggestions to be used. One thing that I think all teachers can appreciate is not having
to reinvent the wheel and being able to use other resources suggested by others. Suggesting
videos and how to find and use video clips appropriately could be found very helpful to others.
Although the video suggestions cannot be used in my classroom, I will definitely share with the
others how to find video clips and how to use them appropriately. I typically use a lot of clips in
my class to teach background history since our curriculum does not focus on certain types of
history in pre-k. I also like to use them to teach science.
I can also use this for my personal development when needing to find videos and resources for
my college courses.

Title: Framing Quality: Annotated Video-Based Portfolios of Classroom Practice by Pre-Service

Teachers
Author(s): Gail E. Joseph and Carolyn Brenner
Summary- This research was done to show
Analysis of the Method- This study was based on the use of using annotated video to help early
childhood educators to improve their interaction with students. The study used 44 students that
were part of an undergraduate early childhood and family studies majors. Students were placed
in community based Early Childhood programs such as Head Start and state Pre-K Programs.
The teaching framework of knowing, seeing, doing, reflect and improve was used. The students
were trained in CLASS which they has to use for indicators and behavioral markers. Students
were given many activities to do, which included using the camera, editing and using Voice
Thread. Students own comments were used to help provide evidence on the impact of using the
videos.
Summary of the Results- The results discussed unforeseen circumstances such as students not
being comfortable using the technology or using outdated film for comments. There were also
glitches with the Voice Thread website. But this process did help to give students to reflect on
their own learning and practice. It also provided an opportunity to use distance learning for those
not able to access higher education training. This assignment also helped students to critique
each other without feeling threatened and to see how they can improve on their interactions in
the classroom.
Critique and Reflection- When I was going through my Teacher Education Program I
remember having to complete an assignment like this. A lot of my classmates did not like the
assignment but I think if having read an article like this one, it may have helped them to better
understand the purpose and know that this was to help them and wasnt a gotcha moment. I
actually enjoyed the assignment because the way you teach can something be different from the
way you feel you teach.
Assignments like this are ongoing. I had to complete an assignment like this my first year of
teaching and now, in my fourth year, use video recordings of myself teaching as evidence of
learning.

Overall Reflection
This assignment helped me to find research-based information as to WHY videos are
used in the classroom. For my age group, I just know that they are entertained by color, sound
and movement and are drawn to watching televisions at home. By researching this topic, I think
now I will better understand the effect of using videos in the classroom as well as how to find the
appropriate videos and how to effectively and appropriately use them in the classroom. Our aim
as educators is to be intentional with our teaching, always having a why. This assignment will
help me to provide just that.
