decorating station at the Tabernacle Fall Festival on Sunday, Oct. 23. For more photos, please see
page 12.

Seneca High School senior

Mackenzie Hoffman was on her
way to breaking the school girls
soccer record for most goals in a
season last year, but didnt quite
make it. She made it a point for
the 2016 soccer season to try to
break that record.
Hoffman went above and beyond that goal this year, breaking
two Seneca records. On Oct. 7,
Hoffman broke the season goals
record in the game against Bishop Eustace Prep School and, on
Oct. 18, Hoffman broke the record
for career goals against Winslow
Township.
I felt pretty happy. It was a
great accomplishment that I
worked really hard for, Hoffman
said.
Im very happy for her. She is
a very hard worker, off-season
and in-season, Ron Jensen, girls
soccer coach, said. On the field,
she really turns it on, getting intense and giving it her all. The
younger kids, they see someone
who they can play like. She isnt
the fastest or the strongest, but
she is one of the hardest-working
kids.

Hoffman
has been playing
soccer
since she was
5, and it was a
no brainer she
would continue with it into
high school.
I fell in love
with the game
HOFFMAN
at an early
age, Hoffman
said. I love that it is not that easy.
You have to have a lot of technique and compete.
Playing as a center midfielder
or forward, Hoffman, along with
two other players last year, scored
11 goals for the season, only one
away from the season record of
12, set in 2011 by Shelby Lyon.
I really wanted to get back to
that number and try to beat it,
Hoffman said.
According to Hoffman, she didnt try to do any special training
to achieve her goal. She just
played the game and tried her
best.
She has a nose for the goal.
Keeping her on the field and involved is success for her and sucplease see SENECA, page 9

Safety seat
inspections
offered
Burlington
County to provide
free review service
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield reminds residents
as they prepare for the holiday
season, and the traveling that
comes with it, free child safety
seat inspections will be set up
every Wednesday throughout October and November.
Inspections will be held at two
times, one at 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
and one at 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at
the Burlington County Administration Building at 49 Rancocas
Road in Mount Holly.
In addition to the checkpoints
we hold at the county administration building every Wednesday,
the sheriff s department will also
be holding the last on the road
checkpoint of the year, said
Stanfield. Our goal is to continue
to provide busy parents with essential services when and where
it is most convenient for them.
Our Child Passenger Safety
Seat Program conducts hands-on
training for parents and caregivers to ensure that their childrens safety seats are properly
installed, Stanfield continued.
The Sheriff s Department Child
Safety Seat Team consists of state
certified technicians who also
check all child seats for safety
concerns and recalls.

RCBC offers extensive

junior-year, '3+1' options
Community college students
can now register for junior-year
courses at Rowan College at
Burlington County and will have
even more 3+1 options next fall
as RCBC and Rowan University
continue to improve one of the
nations most affordable paths to
a bachelors degree.
RCBC is the first community
college in the region to offer junior-year courses that begin in
spring.
Students who have an associates degree, or are scheduled to
receive one in December, can now
stay at RCBC for a third year
under the 3+1 options. The program will debut in January with
three programs: criminal justice,
liberal studies (with a concentration in philosophy, and law and
justice) and biology.

With 3+1, students can pay

RCBCs lowest-in-the-state tuition
and fees through their junior year
before completing their senior
year with Rowan University,
which offers a 15 percent discount
to RCBC alumni who take courses
through the university online or
in Mt. Laurel. This path allows
students to save $75,000 compared
with most four-year colleges and
was one of Money Magazines top
tuition discount programs in the
country.
The future of affordable higher education has arrived in southern New Jersey, RCBC President
Paul Drayton said. 3+1 is so
much more than four. It offers a
real solution to the high costs of
college by providing students
more savings, more high-quality

Holiday helpers

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Its the season to help others; let us know about your fundraiser or drive
orry to say this so early, while 60degree days are still upon us,
but, alas, the holiday season is

creeping up quickly!
The good news is that means many
good-hearted people and organizations
will be gathering food, clothing, toys,
money and other items for those less
fortunate.
At The Sun, we want to help make
your event or drive as successful as
possible. But to do that, we need your
help.
Many retailers count on Black Friday to help put their business in the
black for the year. If holiday sales are
strong, they have a good overall year. If
sales are soft, they struggle to get by.
The same theory can hold true for
nonprofits and other groups that de-

The need for donations this holiday period

effort or donation drive, and well tell
everyone else.

pend on the publics generosity during

the holiday season to see them through
the rest of the year. People, naturally,
are more giving during this time of the
year. So, in the coming weeks, youll
see bell-ringers, donation drives and a
lot of other efforts to help those in
need.
We salute everyone who holds a
drive to help those in need. But we also
want to help make those efforts as
grand and successful as possible.
To do that, we need to know about

your event as soon as possible (at least

two weeks in advance is best). We need
to know what types of items you are
trying to collect, who will benefit from
the drive and, most importantly, how
people can get involved to help you.
Email is the best way to send us this
information, and youll find our news
email address to the right.
Then, after we get your information,
well take it from there. Well get it into
the paper and on our website and let
everyone in town know what it is you
are trying to accomplish and how they
can be a part of it.
Many families are still struggling
with the economy. There always are
people in need. Let us help you to help
them. Send us your event information
and lets make this a big donation year.

Tabernacle Rescue Squad buys township new AEDs

Automated external defibrillators to help aid in life-saving emergencies
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
The township will be more prepared for
life-threatening emergencies as it now has
four automated external defibrillators
available.
The Tabernacle Rescue Squad has purchased four new AEDs for the township to
use at its parks and buildings. The Tabernacle Rescue Squad gave a quick presentation on the new AEDs to the Township
Committee last week.
As the chief, I am here to say here are
your defibrillators because we think it is
important we have them, Tabernacle Rescue Squad Chief George Jackson III said.
Mayor Stephen Lee IV reached out to
Jackson about getting AEDs for Patty
Bowker Park and Pricketts Mill Park. Jackson thought it was a great idea and went to

the squad to ask for its thoughts.

The Tabernacle Rescue Squad officers
and board felt this was a project the squad
should take on. The squad discussed the
price of two, but as the AEDs in the Town
Hall and Community Center were older,
the squad decided to buy four.
It was a great idea, and our organization was able to take (Lees) idea and run
with it, Jackson said.
The AEDs cost about $1,000 apiece and
were paid for out of the rescue squads
budget, according to Jackson.
The AEDs are Defibtech brand, the same
as the ones the rescue squad and Tabernacle Fire Company use. The Defibtech AEDs
are easy to use with two buttons, one to
turn it on and off and one to shock, and
with instructions voiced out through the
AEDs.
For someone who is not trained, they

make it easy to follow the instructions,

Jackson said. Once you activate the unit,
it tells you step by step on how to (use the
AED).
The Tabernacle Rescue Squad will be responsible for maintaining the AEDs.
The two AEDs at Patty Bowker Park and
Pricketts Mill Park will be inside of the
snack stands, where Tabernacle Athletic
Association coaches will have easy access
to them. However, during off season, the
AEDs will be locked away. The other two
AEDs are replacing the older ones in the
Town Hall and Community Center.
Committeeman Joseph Barton asked the
AEDs be moved while not in sports season
so they may be available to use, as they are
a valuable asset. Jackson said he would
look into it, and the suggestion of keeping

cess for the team, Jensen said.
At the Bishop Eustace game,
Hoffman scored her 13th goal
with a penalty kick that tied the
game and sent it to overtime,
where the Golden Eagles won, 3-2.
In the game against Winslow
Township, Hoffman scored her
26th career goal, which broke the
previous Seneca girls soccer
record, and helped lead the team
to victory, 3-0.
One of the teachers announced (the broken record) at
the game. The Winslow team
stopped and clapped for me
Everyone (on the Seneca team)
came up and hugged me, Hoffman said. It was a very special
moment. I love I got to share it
with my team.
Its nice that were having a
record set. For it to be this kind of
record is terrific. It doesnt hap-

pen very often, Jensen said.

Hoffman thanked her coaches,
parents and teammates for helping her achieve these records.
As of Wednesday, Oct. 26, Hoffman has 17 goals for the season
and 28 career goals. The regular
season ended last Friday, and the
playoffs are happening. According to Hoffman, any goals scored
during the playoffs would also go
toward the records.
Hoffman would love to get back
to the finals and become champions, as well as go to the state finals. Last year, Seneca was the
surprise team of the playoffs, as it
made it all the way to the sectional finals, but had a heartbreaking
loss against Toms River South, 32.
We want to get back to the
final championships, Hoffman
said.
Hoffman is not sure where she
wants to go to college or what she
wants to major in, but she knows
she wants to continue to play soccer.

Getting into the fall spirit

BRIGIT BAUMA/The Sun

The Tabernacle Fall Festival on Oct. 23 was filled with fun for locals. Clockwise from above: Emma Rodriguez, 7, of Tabernacle shows off the pumpkin she made at the Girl Scouts of Tabernacles pumpkin decorating station. Michael and Timothy Galvin of Tabernacle checked out the Tabernacle Township school
bus, one of many vehicles available at the touch a truck section of the festival. Brielle Hale, 5, of Tabernacle holds her customized pumpkin. Ashlesha Parekh of Ashs Henna Tattoos puts glitter on Mikayla
Koblers, 12, of Shamong, henna tattoo. Fall decorations from Up Cycled Treasures were some of the
items available for purchase from vendors.

Animal shelter enters partnership with Penn Vet

Burlington County Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio has
announced the Burlington County Animal Shelter will be entering into a partnership with the
University Of Pennsylvania
School Of Veterinary Medicine
to provide medical care to shelter animals.
Through this partnership the
Penn Vet Surgical and Anesthesia Training Program will pro-

vide our shelter animals with a

complete physical examination,
heartworm testing, baseline
blood work and free spay/neuter
surgeries, Garganio said.
As part of the agreement,
transportation of animals to
Penn Veterinary Hospital will be
provided by the Friends of
Burlington County Animal Shelter.
The great part of this agree-

ment is that not only will our

shelter have access to free veterinarian care and professional
guidance, but it will also help to
increase the number of animals
finding their forever homes,
Garganio said.
I am confident that many of
the students, staff and faculty at
Penn Vet will go on to adopt
some of our amazing animals
once they meet them.

According to the National

their use can reduce fatalities for
children under 1-year-old by 71
percent and for toddlers ages 1

committed to educating parents
and caregivers on the steps they
need to take to keep their children safe while traveling on our
roadways.
