Bearing Presses & Pullers

RAIL PRODUCTS
Replacing worn and damaged bearings is an essential part of maintaining rail fleets and no
maintenance workshop is complete without the means to remove and fit these parts.
Atlas Rails automated bearing puller includes bearing clamp hydraulic rams for the removal of the
bearings and a bearing unloader, it will position the wheelset, remove the bearing and place the
bearing on a automatic unloader.
Designed to complement the bearing puller, the automatic bearing press is suitable for the
automated pressing of AP bearings sizes E to GG for wheels 700 - 1100mm with a pressing capacity
of 65 Ton.
The system is able to accommodate locomotive wheelsets with suspension tubes where required.
Bearings are loaded into the bearing press automatically from the feed tray and the press is able to
press both bearings at the same time, or individually.
The bearing press incorporates an automatic wheelset stop and eject unit.
Both machines are fully automated for cost reduction and to improve workshop efficiency.

RAIL PRODUCTS
Atlas Rail Drop Tables

The Atlas Rail Single Axle Drop Table is used to remove and replace wheelsets/bogies and traction
motors from most rail vehicles. The table is hydraulically driven and controlled by the operator via a
hand-held remote.
This simple and compact design allows for easy installation and operation while remaining robust
enough to handle some of the heaviest locomotives currently in service.
With the entire hydraulic system located on the table, including the power unit, and with the ability to
eliminate the control panel this helps keep the work area free of unnecessary obstacles.
Fully interlocked safety pins are incorporated into the design supporting the table in the home
position when powered down. This allows other rolling stock to utilise the line when the drop table is
not in use, and helps maintain a safe working environment.

RAIL PRODUCTS
Wheel Qualification Machine

RAIL PRODUCTS

The Wheel Qualification Machine (WQM) is regarded as an integral part of a rail maintenance
workshop and is invaluable in determining the processing required for wheels.
The machine will automatically load the wheelset, spin it at the correct speed, measure the wheel
diameter, apply the UT probes for the test and unload the wheel when finished.
The WQM tests the wheels using two EPOCH 4 ultrasonic flaw detectors, which detect the ultrasonic
signal and also measure for distance.
The system will analyse the echoes, those expected such as the Back Wall Echo or echoes from
discontinuities such as shelling or cracking.
Discontinuities are then classified as acceptable or unacceptable (defects) depending on their length,
their location in the rim, and their location in relation to other discontinuities.
Each wheel is then given a "Severity Level", with an associated Corrective Action".

RAIL PRODUCTS
Automatic Bearing Clearance Test Machine

RAIL PRODUCTS

The Atlas Rail Automatic Bearing Clearance Test Machine is a versatile piece of workshop
equipment, which is used to automatically test the bearing clearance of double row taper roller
bearings.
Originally developed in conjunction with Timken, the unit accurately measures the bearing clearance
and indicates a pass/fail, which is determined by preset high and low limits.
If the bearing fails, the machine will lower the cone allowing the operator to fit an new spacer and
retest the bearing.
During the measuring cycle the bearing cup is subject to a load in both directions. The cone is
rotated which the cup is held, with the clearance measured using a precision Mitotoyo Linear Gauge
Unit. Rotation speed and loading is adjustable.
Features include:

Fast cycle times

High repeatability

No manual handling

Tooling available for full range of AP bearings

Option available for filtered oil flushing incorporated in the test unit to flush the bearing for
improved accuracy.

distributed across all four wheels.
Installed in a pit beneath the rails, the machine allows for direct loading and unloading of bogies and
it can also be configured to allow trains to pass through when not in use.
Load cells beneath each wheel calculate the loading and should adjustment be necessary, hydraulic
rams can lift the bogie to facilitate shimming.
The Atlas Rail Bogie Spring Tester has been designed to either work with the Bogie Test Machine or
as an independent machine. It can be used to handle multiple types of spring. When used in
conjunction with the Test Bench the same services can be utilised for both machines.

RAIL PRODUCTS
Capstan & Bollard System

RAIL PRODUCTS
The vehicles to be profiled are progressed through the underfloor lathe using a capstan and bollard
arrangement.
The system will typically consist of:

Capstan complete with drive motor and reduction gearbox

Satellite bollards one located at each end of the carshed and one near the capstan

Two heavy ropes to drive the vehicle in either direction

Variable speed drive to allow for creeping of the drive unit when the vehicle is close to the
under floor lathe.

Using the capstan and bollard system, ropes are attached to the vehicle using an "eye-splice" and
chain arrangement.
Each rope is run around the bollard system and coiled next to the capstan. Depending on the
direction of travel, one rope is wrapped around the capstan.
An operator stands near the capstan operating the motor while applying pressure to the rope.
Another operator in the pit adjusts the shunting speed via a dial on the console. The machine driving
heads have four optical switches that feedback to lights on the console.
When the wheelset is close to central then an amber light illuminates. Once the wheelset is in the
correct position a green light illuninates.

RAIL PRODUCTS
Bogie & Wheelset Turntables

The turntable is an essential piece of equipment in any rail workshop and enables the easy
movement of both wheelsets and bogies between different rails which feed the various machine tools
such as wheel presses and lathes.
The turntable is designed to be mounted in a concrete pit, with the rails at floor level for direct
loading and unloading of bogies from one track to another within a workshop.
The turntable has 360 rotational capability, and is rotated automatically or manually using
pneumatics.
As the wheelset is rolled on to the turntable a proximity switch will raise a dampened pin in the track
to stop the unit in the centre, and another pin then rises behind it to hold the unit in place while being
rotated.
Once aligned in the required direction, the lugs will drop back into the turntable and the rail will lift
slightly at one end to eject the wheelset/bogie.
