Annual Report

Board Greetings
Thank you to all of our generous donors and friends
who supported our mission this year. We are grateful
for your belief in our mission, and look forward to many
years ahead serving the children of Baltimore City. If you
havent had the time to visit the school, I encourage you
to call and set a date to see this amazing place. Meet the
children your generosity supports, the dedicated faculty
and staff, and experience the school setting, including the
recent Prayer Garden, which is all lovingly maintained
to promote the best possible learning environment for
the children. In her annual letter our President, Sr. Peggy
Juskelis, SSND, describes the events throughout the year
that have served to enrich the lives of our students, their
families, and also the local community.
This upcoming year, the Board is focusing on providing
support to our school community as they transition to a
new principal and appreciate the benefits of the newlyacquired AIMS (Association of Independent Maryland
& DC Schools) status. Work is also being done to assess
areas for growth and expansion, be they inside the school
building or outside. Please continue your prayerful
support as we identify possible areas to maximize
the effectiveness of our current program and provide
additional services and resources to our students.

Each time I visit the school, I am warmly welcomed, and

greeted by each student I meet. The students are engaged
in their work, and are learning skills that will carry them
through high school and beyond. Their gratitude for their
Mother Seton Academy education is quite evident. I am
very proud to be a part of this school community that
works so diligently to fulfill its mission of challenging its
students to realize their God given talents.
We thank you for the support you have given to Mother
Seton Academy over the past year. Your support of our
mission truly makes a difference in the lives of those
students who are fortunate to realize the benefits of a
Mother Seton Academy education.
Sincerely,

Patrick Mutch
Board Chair

Presidents Message
In my office hangs a sign with
only one word, Gratitude. This past
year has brought many blessings
to Mother Seton Academy which
I would like to bring to your
attention. Your support has made
great things possible.
During the year, Mother
Seton Academy received full
accreditation from the Association
of Independent Maryland and D.C.
Schools (AIMS). The process took place over several years
and involved critical reflection on our life and mission as
a school. Through dialog with school staff, board, families
and friends, we evaluated our work to date, opened our
doors to other professionals and strengthened our strategic
planning for our future.
Joining our staff as Principal is Mr. Tom Malone who
brings with him vast experience as a leader in Catholic
schools. I am grateful to all of our staff who worked hard
to assure the successful completion of our mission during
a time of transition. The positive sense of community
among our staff and students is growing stronger daily.

In this report, you will be able to read an update on our

graduates. Students who were 8th graders when I began
my work here are now high school seniors. During this
time, I have developed a greater appreciation for how
well our students are prepared for future study and how
important graduate support is to their further success.
Featured too in this report is an article on our annual
Wine Harvest. At this event, friends of the school gather
to share the good news of Mother Seton Academy and
to raise funds to meet the academic, social and spiritual
needs of our students. Many people work hard preparing
for this celebratory event.
All of this is possible because you support the mission
of Mother Seton Academy. Because you believe in our
students and generously provide the resources they need
to develop their abilities, they believe in themselves.
Thank you for making that possible. May God bless you
and those you love.
Sincerely,

Sr. Peggy Juskelis, SSND

President

9th Annual Wine Harvest & Auction

On Saturday, November 7, more than 200 friends

of Mother Seton Academy filled Loyola Universitys
McGuire Hall for the 9th Annual Wine Harvest & Auction.
Guests enjoyed delicious wines and an array of tasty
hors doeuvres, while bidding on fabulous auction items
including Ravens Club Level seats, wine tastings, and
more. An exciting raffle featuring a Wheelbarrow of
Cheer filled with wines and spirits was also featured.
Guests also granted more than 10 school Wish List
items including musical instruments, books for the school
library, lacrosse sticks, and microscopes. Featured guest
speaker Diego Martinez, MSA graduate, spoke about
how the school provided a solid foundation for him to
advance to LaSalle University, where he received a degree
in Finance. Monsignor Richard Woy, Rector, Cathedral

of Mary our Queen Parish, was presented with a plaque

in appreciation for the long standing partnership between
the two schools. Almost $35,000 was raised to support the
students of Mother Seton Academy. We are grateful for
the support of our event sponsors: Ariosa & Company,
LLC, Asbestos Specialists, Inc., Baltimore Coffee & Tea,
Bay City Pest Management Company, Catholic Daughters
of the Americas Court of St. Joseph 2300, Center
for Community Service & Justice-Loyola University,
Coastal Exteriors, LLC, Ellin & Tucker, F. Paul Galeone
Photographers, Inc., Grand Cru, Martin Hauf, Maryland
Wineries Association, MECU, Parfections, The Estate of
Mary Heckwolf Staylor, Vend-Lease Company, Inc., and
Whiting-Turner.

Highlights from the Year

In September, we held our first Science Night, which
featured experts from the Maryland Science Center.
Through various stations set up around the room, students
received hands on science experience which was tailored to
complement classroom learning.

Our Extended Day Program offered a total of 7 Club

experiences over the course of the year, in a variety of
disciplines. Students learned how to work collaboratively
with each other, identify possible career paths while having
fun and learning new skills.

In November we joined with our friends at Loyola

Universitys Center for Community Service and Justice to
host the 9th Annual Wine Harvest & Auction. This popular
event raises much needed funds for student scholarships
each year. Diego Martinez, a former MSA student with a
degree in Finance from LaSalle University, shared how MSA
helped prepare him to pursue a career in finance.

Thanks to the hard work of the faculty, staff, and board

of Mother Seton Academy, in early 2016 our school earned
accreditation through AIMS, the Association of Independent
Maryland and DC Schools. The process began several years
ago, and involved numerous meetings and work sessions
throughout the year. We are grateful to our board, faculty,

and staff without whose hard work we would not have been
able to achieve this distinction.

The 22nd Annual Cardinal Cup 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun

Walk, a joint effort with our sister school, The School of
the Cathedral of Mary our Queen raised more than $20,000
thanks to the hard work of the event committee and support
from our generous donors and friends. We are very grateful
for this longstanding partnership with Cathedral and look
forward to many years of working together to provide our
students with the educational services they deserve.

Our 8th grade class performed their individual speeches to

the theme of Wake Up the World. These speeches are the
culminating activity for the public speaking class that each
student must take in order to graduate. Students spent many
hours rehearsing their speeches, and then presented them to
an audience of family, friends, and invited guests.

The Class of 2016 was warmly welcomed by many of the

areas top high schools. Students who graduated in June are
currently attending Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, DeMatha
Catholic High School, Institute of Notre Dame, Mount
Saint Joseph High School, Notre Dame Preparatory School,
Our Lady of Mount Carmel High School Severn School, St.
Frances Academy, and Western High School.

Graduate Highlights
We are delighted to share that in Spring 2016, 22 former
MSA students graduated from high school, with a 100%
acceptance rate into colleges. Twenty-one of these recent
graduates are currently enrolled and one will begin during
the Spring semester. We are especially proud of the college
destinations which include Dickinson College, Frostburg
State University, Hampton College, Salisbury University,
Towson University, University of Baltimore, Wesley College
and Wheeling Jesuit University.
In addition, we are also excited to share that the MSA
Class of 2011 had a 100% high school graduation rate. Our
graduates continue to make us proud in many other ways:
Priscilla Chapman, 05, graduated from Maryvale
Preparatory School in 2009 and went on to earn her B.S. in
Political Science from Mount Holyoke College (pictured with
mother at graduation) after which she worked for one year in
Los Angeles through the Episcopal Service Corps. Priscilla is
now in her second year at Loyola University Chicago School
of Law. In December, she will be traveling to London to study
Londons legal history and traditions.
Brandon Smith-Saxon 09, graduated from Mount Saint
Joseph High School in 2013. After high school he worked
full-time while attending community college part time before
deciding to join the Baltimore Police Academy. He will soon
be completing his training and intends to remain with the
Baltimore City Police Department.

Andrew Britt 12, a recent graduate of Paul L. Dunbar High

School and freshman at Salisbury University, was named
Scholar of the Week by the CollegeBound Foundation
and was honored on Fox45 News and at the 28th Annual
Scholars Luncheon in July 2016.
Armoni Gaddy, 13, who is currently a senior at Cristo
Rey Jesuit High School was selected to participate in an
all-expenses paid British Studies Program for two weeks in
London this past summer.
Genesis Cisneros 14, currently a sophomore at Cristo Rey
Jesuit High School, was accepted into the extremely selective
MERIT (Medical Education Resources Initiative for Teens)
Program affiliated with Johns Hopkins.
Jesus Martinez 12 graduating from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
Priscilla Chapman 05 graduating from Mount Holyoke College
Bryan Jones 12 graduating from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School
