This document provides instructions for adjusting the camshaft timing on BMW N42 and N46 engines using special tools. It outlines the necessary tools, preliminary tasks, adjustment procedure which includes loosening and tightening screws, aligning sensor gears, and pretensioning the timing chain. It also describes checking the timing adjustment by cranking the engine and ensuring the special tools rest against the cylinder head within specified gaps.

Slacken screws of exhaust and inlet adjustment unit and
then reinstall without play.
Place special tool119292 on inlet camshaft and align inlet
camshaft so that special tool119292 rests without a gap on cylinder head.
Fit special tool119291 on exhaust camshaft.
Turn back special tool119293. Hold inlet camshaft with special tool119291 so that it rests without a gap on cylinder head.
Insert screws and tighten down special tool119291 on
cylinder head.
Tighten down special tool119293 by hand until it is
supported on special tool119292. Insert screw and tighten down special tool119292 on cylinder head.
Remove chain tensioning piston.
Insert special tool119340 in cylinder head and bring
adjusting screw by hand on clamping rail into contact but do not pretension timing chain yet.
Note:
Replace screws of inlet and exhaust adjustment unit.
Install new screws of inlet and exhaust adjustment unit and tighten without play.
Fit special tool119350 as illustrated.
Align locating bores of sensor gears to alignment pins on special tool119350.
Secure sensor gears with special tool119350.
Screw special tool119350 to cylinder head.
Slacken screw(1) of exhaust adjustment unit by a half turn.
Slacken screw(2) of inlet adjustment unit by a half turn. Fit socket on screws(1and2) and tighten by hand without play.
Pretension clamping rail by turning adjusting screw with
special tool009250 or commercially available torque wrench to 0.6Nm.
Tighten down screw(1) of exhaust adjustment unit.
Tightening torque 113616AZ.
Tighten down screw(2) of inlet adjustment unit.
Tightening torque 113616AZ.
Remove special tool119350.
Unfasten and remove special tool119340.
Note:
For the timing check described below, the original chain
tensioner must be installed.
Install chain tensioning piston.
Remove special tools119291 and 119292 from
camshafts.
Remove all special tools.
Crank engine at central bolt twice in direction of rotation until engine returns to firing TDC position of 1stcylinder. Resecure flywheel. Fit special tool119292 on inlet camshaft and check timing adjustment.
Note:
The timing is correctly adjusted when the special
tool119292 rests without any gap on the cylinder head or is raised up to 0.5mm to inlet side.
Turn back special tool119293.
Fit special tool119291 on exhaust camshaft and check timing adjustment.
Note:
The timing is correctly adjusted when the special
tool119291 rests without any gap on the cylinder head or is raised up to 1.0mm to inlet side.
