Gerunds

Gerunds are verb plus ing and which serves as a naoun. In other words gerund is
a verb that on the right things/converted into nouns by adding-ing.
In English sentences, gerunds possessed the following roles:
Gerunds as subject
Gerunds as object
Gerunds as subjective complement
Gerunds as object of preposition
Gerunds after word NO
Gerunds after possessive adjective
Gerunds after certain verbs
Gerunds as appositive
1. Gerunds as subject
If Gerund as Subject, then Gerund may stand alone or form a phrase. (Apabila
Gerund sebagai Subject, maka Gerund dapat berdiri sendiri atau berbentuk
sebagai frase.)
The following are examples of gerunds function as subject:
Reading is not my hobby.
Swimming is better than running.
Hiking can be very strenuous.

Eating people is wrong.

Hunting tigers is dangerous.

Flying makes me nervous.

Reading newspapers is not her habit.

Fishing is fun.

Smoking costs a lot of money.

Drinking too much coffee gives him a headache.

Sleeping is necassary to life.- Your singing is very beautiful.


Studying needs time and patience.
Playing game is fun.
Smoking is not good for our health

2. Gerunds as object

There are two possibilities if Gerund used as an Object, the Object of Preposition (Word
Front Object) and Object of Verb (Object Verb).

Ada dua kemungkinan jika Gerund digunakan sebagai Object, yakni Object of
Preposition (Object Kata Depan) dan Object of Verb (Object Kata Kerja).
I like reading.
She goes swimming every morning.
Their favorite sport is running.

He doesnt like writing.

She likes painting.

Susilo needs to be sleeping.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

- I enjoy studying English.

- She likes traveling.


- Thank you for your coming.
- I hate swimming.

3. Gerunds as Subjective Complement


Gerund phrase as subject complement usually always preceded tobe located
between subject and subjective complement, for example:
Her favorite sport is swimming.

One of his duties is attending meetings.

The hardest thing about learning English is understanding the gerund.

One of life's pleasures is having breakfast in bed

- My chief delight is dancing.


- My favorite activity is reading.
- My hobby is cooking.

His hobby is writing novel.

Her problem is not having money.

My favourite occupation is reading.

His problem is not coming to class on time.

4. Gerunds as object of preposition


Gerund as the object of a preposition after a preposition, for example: of, on, no,
with, without, at for, after, before, because of, to, like, about, for, by, in.

The difference with the present continuous tense, the subject of the gerund as a supplement
containing pronouns (his, him, my, etc.). To be more clear, see example below:

His hobby is writing novel. (gerund)

He is writing novel. (Present continuous tense)

Example:
I will wash the dishes after eating.
- He is tired of gambling.- He insisted on seeing her.
- I have no objection to hearing your story.
- You will not be clever without studying.
- Tuty is clever at teaching English.
- In sleeping I met you in the park.

Can you sneeze without opening your mouth?

She is good at painting.

They're keen on windsurfing.

She avoided him by walking on the opposite side of the road.

We arrived in Madrid after driving all night.

My father decided against postponing his trip to Hungary.

You cannot be rich man without working.

We talk about going to Bali for our vacation.


She is not interesting in looking for a new job.
Thank you for helping me carry the bag.
You Should take advantage of living here.
The rain prevented us from completing the work.
We will be happy by listening the music.

Billy is not used to wearing a suit and tie everyday.


Im used to sleeping with the window open.
Im accustomed to sleeping with the window open.
I look forward to going home next month.

5. Gerunds after NO
In the words of prohibition we often use the word NO and is usually placed after the verb-ing
gerunds, for example:
No Smoking!
No parking in this area!
6. Gerunds after possessive adjective
Gerunds are aslo frequently encountered after a possessive adjective, for example:
Thanks for your coming.
7. Gerunds after certain verbs
In English, there are certain verbs that if we want to insert a verb after the verb, the verb
should be shaped after verb + ing or gerund. Here is a list of verb-the verb along with an
example sentence:

postpone (put off)

suggest
avoid
Contoh:
I go shopping with my friends.
I enjoy playing tennis.
Brian quit smoking.
Brian give up smoking.
I appreciated her helping me.
She stopped working at 5 o'clock.
He delayed doing his taxes.
He finished doing his homework.
They suggested staying at the hotel.
He mentioned going to that college.
He avoided talking to her
She kept interrupting me.
We discussed working at the company.
She considered moving to New York.

consider (think about)


discuss (talk about)
keep (keep on)

8. Gerunds as appositive
Appositive usually placed after the noun described, but may be put before
(Appositive biasanya diletakkan setelah noun yang dideskripsikannya, namun
mungkin bisa juga diletakkan sebelumnya)
Gerund as apposition or affirming the sentence, for example:
His method, shooting and killing, eventually came to an end.
She has a bad habit, gambling.
Her favorite exercise, swimming in the pool, makes her body strong.
That difficult work, sawing hard woo, makes him exhausted

Praise be to Allah who has given taufik, guidance, and inayah so


we all could still business as usual as well as writers so that we can
complete the task of English. This paper contains a 'gerund'.
The paper is organized so that readers can add insight or expand
existing knowledge about the 'Gerund' that we present in this paper an
arrangement of a concise, easy to read and easy to understand.
The authors also wish to express many thanks to his teammates
and the mother of teachers who have guided the author in order to make
authors of scientific papers in accordance with the provisions in force so
that it becomes a scientific paper is good and right.
