1. INTRODUCTION
Preposition is a word used before noun or pronoun which links it with other
parts of sentence. Generally, preposition is put before noun or pronoun. The
following word such as noun, pronoun, clause, etc. is called object of preposition.
A preposition is used to show direction, location, time or to introduce a subject.
There are several types of preposition, such as:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Preposition of Time (on, at, in, until, etc.)

Preposition of Place (under, between, beside, next to, etc.)
Preposition of Direction (toward, through, to, etc.)
Preposition of Agent (by, with, without)

There are 2 major rules when it comes to the use of prepositions.

1. The first major rule deals with preposition choice. Certain prepositions
must follow certain words, and the correct preposition must be used to
make relationships between words in the sentences clear.
2. The second major rule deals with the prepositions place in the sentence.
Prepositions must be followed by nouns, and prepositions can only go on
the end of the sentence in certain situations.
Because prepositions must be followed by a noun and have an object, they
usually shouldn't be used at the end of a sentence. However, there are certain
circumstances where it is acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition. These
exceptions exist where the preposition is not extraneous. In other words, the
preposition needs to be there, and if it wasn't, the meaning of the sentence would
change.
2. EXAMPLES
Below is a story consisting of a few prepositions (in bold).
I woke up this morning, after my alarm went off and suck me back to my
reality. Yes, my natural alarm - my mom - always do that in the morning exactly at

6, just 5 minutes after I turn my real alarm into snooze mode. I wake up half-tired
(and half-dead) after pulling an all-nighter playing public match (DotA 2). My
sleeping time literally dies in vain because I played two freaking long matches (1
hour 45 minutes and 2 hours) just to end up giving away my MMR rank to the
winning team (big thanks to my so-called pro teammate). After collecting all my soul
back, I shower quickly, eating my breakfast and go to school at 7.20.
Erika Kim my name is. I was born in South Korea (Jeonju province). My
parents and I moved to London when I was just 11 days old due to my fathers duty.
My father is a British and my mom is a Korean so practically Im a mixed breed. Ive
lived in London almost 19-years (my current age too), and only visit my grandparents
in Jeonju during New Year, Lunar New Year and Chuseok holiday (Mid-Autumn
Festival).
I have many nicknames (mostly made by my friends) such as rika, erika,
kimmy, and others. Well, thats what they used to call me when they first met me.
Then, everything changed (not because of the Fire Nation certainly) after weve
known each other for 4-5 months. They started calling me shorty because of my
petite stature. I dont really like it at first but somehow I come to like it after they
convince me how my mini size feature is really cute, huggable and how lucky my
(future) boyfriend will be if hes dating with me. Speaking about dating, Im the only
one in my squad whos still single and purely innocent (have zero dating
experience). My friends often tease me about how Im still single until now. And
every time they tease me like that, I always counter them with my still cant find the
right guy answer.
Its 7.30 when I arrive at school and the moment I step into the class (only
one step), I can hear them shouting shorty so excitedly from across the room as if
theyre children who are welcoming their parents after a tiring day of working. Yeah,
theyre my so-called-squad Ive been together with since 1st year of junior high
school. My squad consists of Susan, Mary, Jennie, Elizabeth and of course, me. As

usual, theyre talking about K-pop things (the world which I drag them into) and
Im just sitting there comfortably while wearing my headphone.
At 7.50, our homeroom teacher suddenly comes into the class. I wonder what
on earth happens since the class starts at 8 and it should be Mr. James teaching. Then
I notice that our Bryan-sensei (thats his nickname made by us since hes a
Japanese-American) is not alone, but hes with someone.
A tall figure accompanies our teacher as he follows him to class. When he
turns his seemingly-well-build-body to face us, the first thing I notice is how green
his eyes is, something Ive never seen in my entire life (I saw it in a movie before,
but that doesnt count of course). He has such strong gaze which makes me kind of
not sure whether hes really the same age as us. I didnt notice I was identifying him
deeply until a hand appears waving in my line of sight.
Hey, what are you looking at, kimmy? Do you like him?, Susan asked
jokingly.
Nooo, of course not. What are you talking about?, as I answered in a bit
flustered way.
Really? But Ive never seen that looks in your eyes before. Someones falling
in love for the first time, she teases me with her smirk.
I forcefully turn her head to the front so she could stop teasing me.
Oh, youre so cute when you fall in love, kimmy. Susan said without facing
me while giggling softly.
The moment I turn my head to identify him again, our eyes meet. I turn my
head out of embarrassment to the white board and I can feel my cheek is burning. Oh
god, I wonder what happen to me.
Good morning class. How are you today?
Amazingly great, Sir, we answered in unison.
Glad to know that. The reason why Im here earlier today is because we have
a new family member. Hes a transferred student from Manchester. Please
introduce yourself., as he said to the greeny.
Hi, my name is Adam Walker, nice to meet you all.

Nice to meet you too, we answered in unison once again.

Thank you, Adam. You can have a sit beside Erika Kim at the back.
He walks toward me (his desk I mean) and then sit beside me without a
word. Dead silent, I said to myself.
Okay, thats all for now. Mr. James will be here shortly, he said hurriedly
while waving his hand exiting the class.

3. CONCLUSION
Prepositions act as joining words, they also add information to a sentence by
telling something about the relationship between the words. Prepositions often
occur as single words, but can be constructed in multiple words.
When preposition sticks to a noun on a sentence, it forms a structure called
the prepositional phrase. The noun stuck on the sentence is the object of the
preposition. The noun sticking to a preposition might be a true noun, a noun
phrase, or a noun clause. Words serving as prepositions can often serve as other
parts of speech as well. They can act as adverbs and subordinating conjunctions.
And they can join with a verb to form a complement verb, also called a phrasal
verb.
Prepositions have a particular ability to unite two elements in term of space
(to), time (at) and reason (for). Graham King (2000, p.147).
