PERCEPTION
We dont see things as they are, we see things as they
are.
The act or faculty of perceiving, or apprehending things
by means of the senses or of the mind & understanding.
It is the
immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation, as of
moral,
psychological, or aesthetic qualities; insight; intuition; di
scernment.
Perception can be split into two processes- Firstly
processing sensory input which transforms these lowlevel information to higher-level information (e.g.,
extracts shapes for object recognition). Secondly
processing which is connected with person's concept and
expectations (knowledge), and selective mechanisms
(attention) that influence perception.
Perception varies from person to person.

About The Case

The case is based on the movie 3 Idiots and the serious

message given in the movie relates to the issue of career
choices - should they be dictated purely by a pre-1990
mindset (that most parents still live with), or should they
reflect the reality of a modern and economically
liberalised India?
Today, almost all sections of the youth have realised
that education is the key to salvation & in this journey to
"get educated", the challenges that they face are precisely
the centre point of discussion in this movie.
The Dean used to deal with the students according to
his own set of rules and regulations but everything
changed when Rancho, a student changed the Deans
perception with his practical and logical knowledge
which was not only from the course he was learning but
mostly from the knowledge he gathered due to his
presence of mind and saved a life.

As Per The Case Study

The movie appeals to youth on its message of freedom
to choose what they want to (or are in love with,
assuming they really know what that means) and not
choose the field only with the motive of going with the
crowd.
In this case too, the perception about bookish knowledge
didnt work at the time of emergency. Everybody in the
system misses or skips the importance of knowledge and
its practical usability in life and work. What worked for
Rancho was his presence of mind and his skills at the
right moment and at the right time.

The buzz message of Chase excellence and success will

automatically chase you.
It is important for one individual to be know what is
better for him/her, because that is when the real race with
oneself begins so that we can develop skill-sets and
command in our chosen field of work.

Correlation with Theories & Effects

Attribution Theory: Attribution theory deals with how
the social perceiver uses information to arrive at causal
explanations for events. It examines what information is
gathered and how it is combined to form a causal
judgment (Fiske, & Taylor, 1991)
Attribution theory is concerned with how and why
ordinary people explain events as they do. It is explained
by the internal and external factors with the effects of
consistency, distinctiveness and consensus.
In this case, the internal factor was the Deans prescribed
set of rules and regulations and the students perspective
as well where they used to judge their Dean as a man of
Principles.
The external factor can be the behaviour and mentality of
the students in response to the Deans way of conduct.
Also, with the Deans point of view, it can be the way he
used categorise students in terms of merits, mentality and
behaviour.
Halo Effect: Halo Effect is a cognitive bias in which an
observer's overall impression of a person or entity

influences the observer's feelings and thoughts about that

entity's character or properties.
In this case, the Deans view on his students according to
their grades and merit was an effect.
Stereotyping: Stereotyping is creating an image that can
be adopted about specific types of individuals or certain
ways of doing things.
In this case, stereotyping was done by the Dean who
used to think that they should behave and work
according to the way he has prescribed to reach the level
of success, else they will be amongst the ones who will
never know what success tastes like.

Contrast Effect: When we make decisions, we tend to

do it by contrasting between the decision item and
reference items. When two things appear close to one
another, we will tend to evaluate them against one
another more than against a fixed standard.
In this case, the contrast effect was rightly shown
where the dean compared and contrasted the merits of
two students, Rancho and Chatur, based on their grades
and bookish knowledge.
