Introduction

SPIT designs and manufactures bedding resins at its Bourg-LsValence plant in France's Drme region.
As an industrial player, Spit has always been proactive in terms of
both quality (ISO 9002 approval since 1987 and ISO 9001:2000
since 2002), and safety (continuous improvement for our staff
and customers).
Its environmental approach won the company ISO 14001
certification in 2008.
Within this concept of applied standards, the SPIT research
centre has developed two resins for rebar bedding applications.
In accordance with section 5 of the ETAG 001 guidelines
and technical report TR 023 concerning post-installed rebar
connections, all bedding resins must have European Technical
Approval (ETA) as of August 1st 2008.
As with all construction products, this ETA entitles the holder to
display the CE marking on the bedding resins concerned.
Design calculation for rebar connections must now comply with
Eurocode 2 and technical report TR 023 concerning post-installed
rebar connections.
This document is complementary to standing rules for non prestressed concrete. Structures loading capacities are determined
within calculation engineers' design studies.

2.5 - RESISTANCE TO CHEMICAL AGENTS

Chemical resistance was determined by exposing resin samples to various chemicals. The samples resistance was determined by visual
observation and classified in three categories: rsistant (+) , sensible (o) . non-resistant (-).

Resistant (+): The samples in contact with the chemical did not show any visible damage, such as cracks, damaged surfaces, broken
angles, or significant swelling.
Sensible (o): to be used with precaution depending on exposure and usage field. The samples in contact with the chemical are slightly attacked.
Non resistant (-): usage not recommended. The samples in contact with the substance were damaged.

2.6 - DURABILITY TESTS

Durability tests were performed on SPIT EPCON C8 and EPOBAR/EPOMAX in different environments in accordance with ETA guidelines,
Section 5"Bonded anchors" (March 2001 edition), in order to check the influence of these environments on bond strength. The environments
tested are the following:
Immersion in a highly alkaline solution (pH=13.2) during 2000 hours.
Sulfurous atmosphere for 80 cycles alternating 8 hours in a sulfur dioxide atmosphere and 16 days in a laboratory atmosphere. The sulfur
dioxide atmosphere corresponds to the introduction of 0.67% of SO2 in an room at 40C, 100 RH (relative humidity); sulfuric acid is
therefore created in contact with resin.
The obtained results for these tests provide a guarantee that the bond strength of the resins is not affected by any of these conditions.

3.4 - SPIT EXPERT CALCULATION SOFTWARE

A new version of the SPIT EXPERT calculation software, in accordance with Eurocode 2 and ETAs rules, can be
used to calculate and print a design calculation note for EPCON C8 and EPOBAR/EPOMAX resins, to join
to your engineering documentation (download on www.spit.fr).

3.5 - CALCULATION EXAMPLES

Determination of the anchoring length for a bar diameter 12and an ultimate load to be supported
of 35kN per fixing.

Assumptions :
Concrete C25/30
Diamond drilling/coring

80 mm

SPIT EPCON C8 resin

100 mm

rebars layout:

80 mm
Ultimate bond strength to be taken into account for concrete C25/30 and for installation with diamond
coring fbd = 2.7 N/mm .

Calculation of reference anchoring length Lb,rqd:
35 000 = 343 mm
12 2.7

Calculation of 2 coefficient dependinf on the cover influence:

Cd = min(a/2 ; c1 ; c)
Cd = min(100/2 ; 80 ; 80) = 50

2 = 1 0,15(Cd ) /

2 = 0,525 therefore we take minimum value of 0,7
Calculation of design anchoring length Lbd: Lbd = 2 5 Lb,rqd
Lbd = 0,7 343= 240 mm

 dhesion design calculation
4.1 - FIELD OF APPLICATION
With SPIT EPCON C8 and EPOBAR/EPOMAX resins, the adhesion calculations can be used to determine the anchoring
lengths in the case of application without influence of edge or center distances.
Traction tests are generally performed onsite to validate the minimum anchoring lengths shown in the table below.

4.2 - DESIGN CALCULATION METHOD

Characteristic bond strength

Rk : 17,85 N/mm2 resulting from confirmed tests and the calculation using the rebar diameter (available for rebar
diameter 8 to 40mm) [trk = Ru,m x 0,75].

report n 26007642
FIRE RESISTANCE FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT WALL / SLAB
The present table is aimed at supplying data for
the design of the injection anchoring system when
exposed to fire. This study does not deal with the
mechanical design at ambient temperature, neither
does it deal with the design according to other
accidental sollicitations, these shall be done in addition.
The table below gives performances subjected to fire
exposure in wall to slab connection with concrete
reinforcing bar, using SPIT EPOBAR/EPOMAX resin, in
C20/25 concrete.
The values in white character indicate the
proof of requirements to fire is satisfied with
fi= 0,7 in a C20/25 concrete (see method
below).

Design method for resistance to fire according to Eurocode 2: fire proof using design resistance = Rd,fi Ed,fi
Rd,fi Design resistance in the fire situation.
Ed,fi Design effect of actions in the fire situation This value could be calculated from the calculation at ambient
temperature: Ed,fi = fi x FRdu.
FRdu Design ultimate limit load at normal temperature for one rebar sealing at the anchorage depth Ls (mm).
fi Reduction factor for design load level in the fire situation. fi equals to 0,7.

SPIT EPCON C8 injection systems in wall to slab

connection with concrete reinforcing bar and
subjected to fire exposure according to the CSTB test
report n 26007642 (Not included in DTA )
FIRE RESISTANCE FOR STEEL REINFORCEMENT WALL / SLAB
The present table is aimed at supplying data for
the design of the injection anchoring system when
exposed to fire. This study does not deal with
the mechanical design at ambient temperature,
neither does it deal with the design according to
other accidental sollicitations, these shall be done in
addition.
The table below gives performances subjected to fire
exposure in wall to slab connection with concrete
reinforcing bar, using SPIT EPCON C8 resin, in
C20/25 concrete.
The values in white character indicate the
proof of requirements to fire is satisfied with
fi= 0,7 in a C20/25 concrete (see method

Environment
Eco designs are central to SPIT'S design for innovation

Research
Manufacturing
Products
Our development focus on
designing products that use
raw materials which have less
impact on the environment,
reduce waste and ensure all
our cartridges can be recycled.

Thanks to its rigid black cartidge, EPCON C8,

EPOBAR and EPOMAX cartridges are shocks
resistant and protected against climate issues
(UV, humidity...).
The cartridge design has a special plunger
which reduces resin waste and limits the
quantity of dangerous waste. This is not the
case for the supple pouch system*

Our patented resins are designed

and manufactured in our factories
located in France.
They follow ISO 9001 Quality
standards and ISO 14001
Environmental standards.

*According to independant laboratory test report.

SPIT EPOBAR/EPOMAX and SPIT EPCON C8 resins are packed in black cartridges.

This rigid packaging has the following benefits :

Maximum reduction of the quantity of resin disposed of after use: 3 times less remaining resin after use
than in other types of packaging (supple pouch cartridge) .
CARTRIDGE
RESIN

HARDENER

PISTON

Prevention of cartridge damage during transportation.

Protection of resin from UV exposure.
Easier re-use after partial use.
Prevention from leakage.

DISPOSAL OF USED CARTRIDGES ON SITE

Like all resins of the market, SPIT EPOBAR/EPOMAX and SPIT EPCON C8 resins cartridges (classification 08 04 09*- Waste of
adhesives and sealant containing organic solvents or other dangerous substances) must be disposed of as special
industrial waste (with any hardened product disposed of as ordinary non dangerous industrial waste).

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (MSDS)

Material safety datasheets (MSFDS) for EPOBAR/EPOMAX and EPCON C8 resins are available on www.spit.fr.
