BYU-Idaho Preschool Lesson Plan

PHASE #2
Lesson Plan #5
Meagan Nelson
Baking
Date:
2/10/16
Supervisor:
Ciara Barker
Lead Teacher: Meagan Nelson
Children and Learning/Development Goals:
1. Aida- Aida needs to be challenged with math and science goals. This lesson will allow her to
do more advanced math through measuring and even adding using measuring cups and
ingredients.
2. Lorien- Lorien needs help with zipping up her coat and other fine motor skills. Small focus
groups will focus on spreading frosting and using fine motor skills to decorate cupcakes.
3. Hannah- Hannah has a hard time with transitions. The transition to small focus groups will
give her a cupcake and immediately something to do so that the transition is smooth and
she can focus on the upcoming activity.
4. Reagan- Reagan struggles with fine motor skills. Small focus groups will help Reagan use his
fine motor skills to spread frosting and decorate cupcakes.
5. Rebeca- Rebeca struggles following directions or meeting expectations. Gathering time and
closing circle has activities that require involvement. Rebeca will be engaged and therefore
will not run around during group time.
6. Sully- Sully struggles being engaged with the other children. There are various books in the
book area for Sully to read if he needs time away from other children. Teachers will look for
opportunities to give him one on one time.
Preassessment and Findings: I set out food and baking supplies during class. I played
with the children, asked questions and observed what they did. At one point, Ally said that
she was going to make muffins using a toaster. I asked her what went into the muffins and
she said peppers, salt and sugar. I observed Lorien playing with a small baker figurine. The
baker had a bowl of batter that he was mixing and Lorien said he was mixing pizza dough.
While playing with a plastic loaf of bread, Aila said that the bread comes from the store.
When I asked Reagan where to bake bread, he said I dont know and then guessed in the
toaster? I then observed Sully, Annabelle, Lehi, Hannah and Tucker play with the plastic
food and baking sheets. All of them were very interested in making food. Most of them
knew what the blender and toaster was, but were unsure how to use the baking sheets.
Ideas to be Emphasized:
1. Dough is a mixture that makes cookies and bread.
2. Batter is a mixture that we can pour into pans or baking sheets.
3. In baking, we use the oven to heat food and cook it.
Preschool Concepts or Skills:
1. Measurements
2. Hot and Cold
3. Ability to participate in group activities

participate in Gathering Time while sitting on
the tape with little assistance or reminders.
Most of the time, complies with group rules,
like sitting on the tape. (IELG D3 G31 CI9)
We are going to make some cupcakes. Who
likes cupcakes? Cupcakes are made from
batter. Batter is a mixture that we pour into
pans or baking sheets. I need your help to
make this batter. I have here the ingredients
for cupcake batter (Have premeasured
ingredients ready). Read the recipe out loud
and follow directions. Have the children
pretend to pour the ingredients in their pretend
bowls. While we pour, chant the words pour
pour pour the flour in, pour pour pour the oil in
etc.
Mix the batter. Everyone mix their cupcake
batter too. Now, we are going to pour our
batter into a baking sheet. I put these papers
in the sheet to protect the batter from sticking
to the pan. I am going to pour a little bit of

3. Heat

batter into each tin. Everyone count the tins

with me. (Pour batter into the individual tins).
Batter and Dough need to go into the oven to
bake. The oven gets very hot. The Cupcake
batter will rise, meaning it will get bigger. I am
going to put the cupcakes in this magic oven.
Lets set the temperature in the oven to 350
degrees. We have to wait for it to heat up.
(Count to 5 with children). Now the oven is all
heated up, lets put the batter in. (Put batter
into pretend oven) Lets count as high as we
can while we wait (Count aloud with children.
Remove prebaked cupcakes). Wow! These
cupcakes looks delicious! But they need some
decorations!

*Story: Floppy
Cake

The other day, I was invited to a friends house. They asked

me to bring a cake so that we could all share it. I decided to
make a pineapple cake. First, I got the eggs and sugar and I
mixed it all together. Everyone mix your batter in your bowls
too. (Pretend mix). Then I added the flour and the pineapple.
Mix again. The recipe said add 1 tsp of baking soda. How
much is a teaspoon? It is so little. I forgot to add the baking
soda. I put the cake in the oven (everyone put the cake in the
oven). I waited 30 minutes. What do you think happened to
my cake? Well, I put it in the oven and it got really big and
then shrunk again. I learned that the baking soda is very
important. That is why we follow recipes! If I would have
made the batter right, my cake would have been so yummy.
Objective: Children will be able to listen to and participate in
a story about me baking a cake. Listens and participates in
stories (IELG D5 G48 CI5)

Pictures

*Game: Baker
Baker

A teacher plays the part of the Baker. She sits in a chair with
their back to the class. A plastic cake or picture of a cake is
put under the chair. While the baker was turned around with
his or her eyes closed, a support teacher will pick someone to
tap on the shoulder and that child will sneak up and steal the
cake and hide it somewhere on his person. Then everyone
would sing the Baker Baker Chant. Then the Baker has three
chances to guess who took it. Sometimes it was left under his
or her chair. If the baker guesses right then they get to do it
again. If they guessed wrong than the person who had the
cake get a turn as the baker.

Whats in the
Box?

I will have a small box and place some pictures in it with pairs
of familiar words that rhyme (like box/socks, cat/hat, or
chair/bear. I will hold the box and choose a picture. If the
picture shows a cat, say In my box, theres a cat. Then I will
ask the class, whats in your box? They will respond with
something that rhymes In my box, theres a hat (or some
other rhyming word).

Mistake Song

Description: This activity has students practice a familiar

song. Sing any familiar song. The teacher then models
singing the song but changes the beginning sound of each
word. For example, small and brown would be gall and
mrown. The teacher then invites the students to practice
altogether. Switch words around each time you sing the song
and have children point out what mistake we made.

WORDS TO SONGS & FINGERPLAYS:

Baker Baker Chant
Baker, Baker, Where's your cake?
Somebody stole it, from your plate,
In three guesses you will see,
Find your cake as quick as can be!
There was an old Lady
There was an old Lady who swallowed some flour
That must have been sour, to swallow some flour
There was an old lady who swallowed some chocolate
Some chips and some chunks, delicious I bet!
There was an old lady who swallowed some butter
Thats a lot of clutter, to add the butter
There was an old lady who swallowed some sugar
To add to the stir, some sweet white sugar
There was an old lady who swallowed an egg
And some nutmeg, along with the egg
There was an old lady who could take no more
She churned and she stirred, and she stirred some more
She let out a burp and began to quake
Til out popped some, COOKIE DOUGH ready to bake!
Who Stole the Cookies?
Who stole the cookies from the cookie jar?
Who, me? Yes, you!
Couldn't be! Then who?
(child's name) stole the cookies from the cookie jar.
Who, me? Yes, you!
Couldn't be! Then who?
Pat-a-Cake
Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, bakers man,
Bake me a cake as fast as you can.
Pat it and roll it and mark it with a B,
And put it in the oven for baby and me.
