CALIBRATION OF VERNIER CALIPER

Experiment No: 1
Date:
Aim:
To calibrate the given vernier caliper using slip gauge and
draw the calibration graph and error graph.

Principle:
The principle of vernier is that when two scales or divisions
slightly different in size are used, the difference between them
can be utilized to enhance the accuracy of measurement.

1. Outside jaws: used to measure external diameter or width of an object

2. Inside jaws: used to measure internal diameter of an object
3. Depth probe: used to measure depths of an object or a hole
4. Main scale: scale marked every mm
5. Main scale: scale marked in inches and fractions
6. Vernier scale gives interpolated measurements to 0.1 mm or better

7. Vernier scale gives interpolated measurements in fractions of an inch

8. Retainer: used to block movable part to allow the easy transferring of a measurement

Procedure:
1. The slip gauge, vernier caliper are cleaned using

acetone

and lint free cloth.

2. The zero error of the given vernier is checked (if there is
any error, zero correction must be accounted while
measuring)
3. The least count of the vernier caliper is calculated.
4. Slip gauges are held between the vernier caliper jaws.
5. Main scale reading (MSR) and the vernier scale reading
(VSR) are noted. The value measured is MSR+ (VSR*LC)
6. The above procedure is repeated for various standard
sizes.
7. The error is found out by comparing the standard value
(Slip gauge value)and vernier caliper reading.
8. The calibration graph is drawn with the standard reading
on X-axis and indicated reading on Y-axis
9. Error graph is drawn by taking indicated reading along Xaxis and the error value along Y-axis.
