News from
Welcome to Africa Connected, a
newsletter designed to keep you and
fellow stakeholders up-to-date with
the latest developments at WIOCC.
My hope is that you will find this
bulletin interesting and useful.
African telecommunications is
changing faster and more
dramatically than anywhere else in
the world. In an industry as dynamic
as ours, I believe it is vital that each
of us find ways to connect more
effectively, allowing us to keep up
with the pace of change around us.
Service providers throughout Africa
share many concerns. At this moment, a
key issue is how to create differentiation
in progressively competitive markets.
With this in mind, the more innovative
are already starting to invest in
delivering quality as the way forward
offering reliable, high-performance
services to a discerning customer base.
Our first article outlines how WIOCC is
helping service providers deliver highquality, international connectivity to
their customers.
We also bring you news of the latest
terrestrial fibre-optic rollouts, which are
taking connectivity and route diversity
to a growing number of inland
locations and landlocked countries
throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
These developments, together with the
rapid adoption of smart-phones and
expansion in internet use, are driving a
huge rise in demand for international
bandwidth. One result is an upgrade to
EASSy, ahead of schedule and to a
much greater extent than initially
envisaged, reinforcing its position as
the system of choice for telcos and ISPs
looking for international connectivity
into and out of Africa.
Feedback on this
first issue would be
welcome, so please

Other WIOCC shareholders are also extending the reach of their terrestrial fibre
networks. Telecommunication de Mozambiques network now reaches the borders with
Malawi and Zimbabwe, and TelOne in Zimbabwe has deployed optical fibre to the
borders with Mozambique and Zambia. Carriers and ISPs in Malawi and Zambia, all
landlocked countries, are now taking advantage of international connectivity via EASSy.
TelOne is using its improved connectivity to market its broadband service offerings, and
ISPs in Zambia and Malawi are starting to exploit their lower-cost, higher-performance
internet connectivity to improve their service. As a result, businesses and consumers are
already starting to reap the benefits of better connection with the rest of Africa and a
direct route to the internet in Europe.

WIOCC has interconnected the EASSy cable with shareholders and partners
terrestrial networks across eastern and southern Africa. This enables it to deliver
seamless, end-to-end services as a one-stop-shop connectivity solution throughout
much of sub-Saharan Africa. The WIOCC network includes over 50,000km of
optical fibre, linking more than 400 towns and cities in 20 African countries.
As these networks grow rapidly with the increasing demand for capacity and
reliability, protected rings are progressively being deployed.
