Flipped
Classroom

Students play a
game in the form of
a QR hunt to
practice subtraction.
Student are
awarded points
for each question
they answer
correctly.

At home: Students
download and play
Peter Pigs Money
Coin Counter to
learn about
counting and sorting
different values of
money in the U.S.
currency system.
In class: Students
work on activity
work sheets that ask
questions about
how much different
types of U.S.
currency are worth.

Mathematics
1. Number Sense,
Properties, and
Operations

2. Patterns, Functions,
and Algebraic
Structures

Teacher creates a
QR hunt for
students to use
that helps them
practice
subtraction with
decimal numbers.
Standards 1 and
2

Students go around
the school on a QR
hunt for arithmetic
and geometric
sequences.
Students work in
teams of three for
the competition and
the team that
finishes first with all
the correct answers
and work wins a
prize.
Standards 1,5,
and 6

Evaluate Students
evaluate each
problem about
geometric and
arithmetic sequences
to solve the problems.

Students collaborate
with one another in
teams as they go on the
QR hunt. The QR hunt
itself is an alternative
assessment for
checking students
understanding about
geometric and
arithmetic sequences.

3. Analysis, Statistics,
and Probability
4. Shape, Dimension,
and Geometric
Relationships
Reading, Writing, and Communicating
1. Oral Expression and
Listening
2. Reading for All

Purposes
3. Writing and
Composition

Teacher notices
that students are
using fun-on
sentences
frequently. The
teacher gives a
lesson on how to
shorten run-on
sentences and
shows students
how to use
Hemingway an
app that helps
students know
when to shorten
sentences and
check for
grammar errors.
Standards 1 and
3

Students are given

points instead of
grades on an
assignment for
creative writing in
which the
Hemingway app is
implemented to
check for run-on
sentences. Students
are then given a
different size of
sticker on their
assignment once it
has been graded
based on how many
points they
received.

4. Research and
Reasoning

Students work in
groups to write a
research paper
about the
Mayflower and the
Plymouth Rock.
Google Drive is
utilized for students
to share their work
and so that all the
students in each
group are able to
work on the project
at the same time.
Standards 1,2, 6,
and 7.

1. History

Students take a poll

on Cel.ly to collect
what prior
knowledge students
have about
Plymouth Rock and
the Mayflower.
Teacher then gives a
small lesson on
information that
students do not
know. Students
discuss in groups
what they learned

Analyze and Create

Students analyze
the information they
find on Plymouth Rock
and the Mayflower to
check to see if it is
relevant to what they
are writing their
research paper about
and check to see if the
information is
credible. The students
then create a
research paper.

Students exhibit what

they learned about the
Mayflower and Plymouth
Rock by creating the
research paper.
Students also reflect on
their learning by sharing
their research paper to
the class and by
listening to the feedback
given on it.

Social Studies
Analyze and Create
Again, students
analyze the data they
find on their research
paper and use that
data to create the
research paper.

By having students take

the poll, the teacher is
checking for students
prior knowledge about
the Mayflower and
Plymouth Rock. The
teacher is using the
information collected
from the poll as the
starting point for their
lesson.

At home: Students
take Cel.ly poll and
watch a short video
about Plymouth
Rock.
In class: Students
work in groups on
their research
paper.

and chose a topic

from Plymouth Rock
and the Mayflower
to write a group
research paper on
it.
Standards 2, 5,
and 6

2. Geography

Teacher uses the

Atlas app to teach
European
geography and
has students click
on the different
countries within
the app to learn
fun facts about
the country.
Standards 1 and
3

Students get to
choose what
country they do a
small presentation
on using the app.
This way students
are given a voice
by choosing what
they do their
presentation on and
their homework
assignment is
slightly gamified.
At home: Students
download the
Savings Spree app
and set goals for a
wish list and a
budget for spending
on the app.
In class: Students
discuss their
budgets, goals, and
wish lists.

3. Economics

4. Civics
Science
1. Physical Science
2. Life Science

Students use the

app DNA Play to
learn about how
genes and
phenotypes affect
appearance. After
learning a bit about
DNA, students apply
what they learned
by creating
monsters on the
app that the teacher
can then print out
and hang around
the classroom
Standards 1, 3,
and 4

Apply and Create Students apply what

they learned about
genetics to create
their own monsters.

Students learn about

genetics through
observations made
using DNA Play.
Students then exhibit
what they learned about
genetics by using
genetics to create their
own monsters.

Students are
literally using an
educational video
game to learn
about DNA and play
a game to show
what they learned.

3. Earth Systems
Science

The teacher is
giving a listen
about the solar
system and
planets. NASA
Visualization
Explorer is used to
give students a
visual image of
the solar system.
The teacher also
shows the
students how to
use the app so
that the students
can download it
with their parents
permission and
use it on their
own.
Standards 1 and
3

At home: Students
play around more
on NASA
Visualization
Explorer and
complete a web
search using the
app.
In class: Students
discuss the asteroid
belt as a class and
the difference
between planets in
front of and behind
the asteroid belt.

Differentiation
Teacher aids
students in taking
poll on Cel.ly for
students with
dyslexia or other
learning disabilities.
Students with
reading disabilities
also work on
creating a 5 slide
presentation with
PowerPoint to
discuss daily life for
children living at
Plymouth Rock
during the 1600s.
Teacher assists
students with any
questions they may
have.
Standards: 1,3,
and 5

Learning Disabilities EEOs

Physical Disabilities

Teacher uses
Hemingway to
teach students
with hearing
impairments
about run-on
sentences and
proper sentence

Apply and Create

Students apply what
they learned about
the Mayflower and
Plymouth Rock to
create a presentation
on the daily life for
children at Plymouth
Rock.

Alternative
Assessment Instead
of taking a quiz or test
to check for student
understanding, students
are creating a
presentation to show
what they learned.

Cel.ly is an
educational
technology texting
service that allows
students to see
responses of poll
questions. Since
students took the
poll, they can also
track the progress
of the poll questions
and see where they
line up in their
knowledge about
Plymouth Rock with
other students.

structure, since
the interactive
website explains
sentence
structure through
words and
highlighted
sections.
Standards 1,2,
and 3

Gifted/ Talented

At Home; Students
play around with the
NASA Visualization
Explorer to learn
about distance
between the planets
in the solar system.
In Class: Students
share what they
learned with other
students, helps the
teacher
demonstrate how to
use NASA
Visualization
Explorer, and writes
a short reflection
about what they
learned about
distance between
the planets.

Other
Reflection:
Learning about QR codes and other types of mobile learning devices helped me to expand my technology area of TPACK. I also
learned another way to correlate my technology and content knowledge area of TPACK together. I found the lesson on QR codes
to be very useful and see myself potentially implementing QR hunts into my future classroom. I say this because, I believe that
QR hunts are a fun interactive way of alternative assessment that students can complete to check for students understanding of
a certain lesson. I also think QR hunts are an easy way to implement gamification into the classroom. Overall, I really enjoyed the
lesson on QR codes and mobile learning and have a better understanding of what different types of mobile learning are out there
because of those lessons.
