Grade: 4/5
Teaching Instructional Strategies:

Outcomes:
Grade 4: N4.4

multiplication (2- or 3-digit by 1-digit) by:
Solving problems

Indicators:
c. Create and solve a multiplication problem
that is limited to a 2- or 3-digit number
times a 1-digit number.

Grade 5: N5.2
Analyze models of, develop strategies
for, and carry out multiplication of whole
numbers.
Prerequisite Learning:
-

Addition/Subtraction

Multiplication/ Division

Adaptive Dimension:
If the mental math worksheet is to difficult:
- Work in pairs
- Use scrap paper to find the answer

a. Describe mental mathematics strategies

used to determine multiplication facts to 81

Materials Needed/Preparation
- Post it notes
- White board and markers
- Mental Math worksheet

Presentation:
Set: (5 minutes)
As the students walk in to the class, they will notice instructions on the board.
Post

3.

it Challenge!
Complete word problem on post it note on desk
Post it on the board when you have solved the problem
Sit quietly until peers are done

Because this lesson will be in the last period, the students are often more active and
talkative. This Post-it Challenge will focus them from recess to math class.
When all of the post-its are on the white board and the students are quite, I will read
the word problem out loud and choose a few post-it notes to read. I will then go over
the correct answer and draw it out on the board.
Word problem: Sarah was going to change the light bulbs in her house. She counted
that she had 3 lamps in each room. If her house had 6 rooms total, how many lamps
does she have in her whole house?
Development:
Instructions: (10 minutes)
I will ask the class, What is mental math?
- It is math you can do in your head without a piece of paper or pen
Before I give the hand out I will explain the instructions:
- Go through the steps of this handout on your own and in your head. Write the
answer in the cloud.
- If you are absolutely stuck on the question, move on to the next one.
- After you have tried them all mentally, go back and try the ones you are stuck on
again. Use scrap paper if you have too. This is only if you have tried it at least
twice in your head.
- If you finish early, check your answers with a calculator and then on the back,
make up your own questions!
We will do a practice question as a class. I will write each step to the question on as we
go:
*Raise your hand if you know the answer
Start with the number 9
Multiply by the number of legs on a spider (9x8=72)
Add the digits (7+2=9)
Divide by 3 (9/3=3)
Show your answer = 3
Activity: (25 minutes)
I will then hand out the worksheet, to be completed on own.

Teaching Notes:
Closure: (20 mins)
Back 2 Back mental math game as a whole class
- Game instructions attached

Extension:
- If students finish the mental math worksheet early, they can create their own mental
math equations on the back of the worksheet. Share them with a partner.
