updates

Exams:

The exams will be closed-book. Exam schedule may be found on the detailed syllabus.

Missed Exam Policy:

Missed mid-term exam without advance notation of valid excuse, or illness without Doctors note
will be substituted with the lowest grade of the other midterm. Students with valid excuse will
either be given an oral exam or written exam via the discretion of their professor. Final exam
cannot be substituted.
Lectures:

You are expected to come to lectures on time and prepared by reading assigned text before
lecture. Attendance is expected and will help your progress.

Homework:

Weekly homework assignments will be due on Thursday by 5 pm in the collection box inside the
ECE laboratory in PHO 105. Late homework will not be accepted.
Homework submissions must be neat and organized. Each solution should clearly indicate the
technique used and assumptions made. The right answer by itself will earn no credit. Badly
organized, illegible, or unclear work will cause loss of credit. Final answers should be
highlighted (boxed, circled, underlined, etc.). Start each problem on a new page
To ensure prompt grading and safe return of your work, a cover page (provided on Blackboard)
must be stapled on each homework set. The cover page should contain only your name, BU ID
number, section, date and HW#.

Homework and Lab Collaboration Policy:

Learning takes place in many ways and is different for all students. Thus, in this class, you are
permitted to collaborate as much as you wish with your classmates on homework assignments
and labs. We have only one rule: The homework assignment that you turn in must be in your own
handwriting.
Discussion:

Discussion classes start second week of classes.

I and W grades:
An I (Incomplete) grade will be given only in extreme circumstances in which most of
the coursework has been completed and enforceable and uncontrollable circumstances
prevent a student from completing the remaining requirements. A W (Withdrawal) grade
will be given according to the University rules.

Laboratory Information
Laboratory:

Labs will meet weekly in PHO 105, starting in week two. Laboratory materials are available on
the course management site.

Required Purchases for Lab:

Buy a quadrille-ruled, bound lab notebook. A spiral notebook or three-ring binder is not
acceptable; loose paper should never be used on the lab. You must also purchase an EK307
laboratory kit available counter in PHO105 (cost $40 cash or check). Used kits from prior EK307
students are acceptable. Also: For the first lab, bring one 1.5 V battery (AAA, AA, C, or D). For
later labs, you will need a pair of headphones or earbuds. Any type will do, but do not bring
your expensive $100 set. Buy cheap headphones if you need them.
Lab Notebooks:
We will be designing and building things and recording the results in our notebooks. Upon the
completion of each assignment level, your notebook should be signed by your lab TA.
Formal lab reports are not a part of this class. Your lab notebook is a working document whose
purpose is to help you remember what you did in the lab. The level of detail should be such that
another engineer of comparable skill (e.g, a fellow student) can understand and reproduce your
experiment.
Lab preparation:
Read the lab assignment and related lecture material. Most of the design work for the labs should
be done prior to arriving in your lab session.
