Case Study
I. Subject
I observed E.Z is a male in the preschool at St. Louis the King Catholic School. I selected
E.Z because I wanted to see a child that is very active and I wanted a child that will interact with
others that are not as active or busy like himself. I chose E.Z. as well because this is his second
year in pre-k and I wanted to see the difference from last year and this year. By being in pre-k for
two years, it benefited E.Z because he grew academically and socially. E.Z is 4 years old and
. E.Z. is half Native American and half Polish/ Caucasian. His mother is Native American and
his father is Polish/Caucasian.
II. Information Source
By gathering all the information about E.Z, I observed him by using the developmental
checklist for 4 to 5 years. The checklist was very useful to understand his development because
there are no red flags for E.Z. I also interviewed the father to get information and asked him
questions about E.Z. By observing him, I could see different areas of E.Z. personality. By
knowing him for two years, Ive seen the growth he did over the year. He came a long way and
the help the teachers and parents are putting in with him is helping.
III. Background Information
The family background of E.Z is that his father is the vice principal at St. Louis the King. He
received his Masters degree in December of 2014. His mother has a high school diploma but
only needs 20 more credits to get her philosophy degree. By interviewing his father, he said they
are middle class in socioeconomic level. E.Z. mother manages a restaurant at the Biltmore. E.Z.
is 3ft and 9inches tall. His parents work with him at home with his homework and try to teach
him more so he can be advanced. His height is average compared to the other students in is
class. E.Z. has brown hair and brown eyes. He is a healthy and has no food allergies. He is active
and always wanted to be up and about. E.Z has perfect attendance and has no tardy. E.Z dad
needs to be here at school early because he is the vice principal so the kids get here on time every
day. E.Z is typically developing because he is on track and not too low nor too high. Hs average.

IV. Developmental Performance

The learning strengths I noticed that E.Z. has it that he holds a pencil or any writing
utensils appropriately. He writings with his right hand. He can also use scissors correctly and his
fine motor skills are developmental appropriate for his act. He can also tie his shoes, I observed
him the way he does it and he knows all the steps. Another of his learning strength is when
teacher starts to give directions about the topic and E.Z follows the 3 step directions in the order
they were given. His physical ability is also another strength because he can balance, skip, hop,
swing and can stand on one foot for 10 seconds or more. An area that E.Z is interested in is the
block area or the art center. By creating art, he shows his express in the color he uses. Ive
noticed when hes mad or something is up with him, he used red and black. But he is usually a
happy kid and uses all different bright colors. A learning limitation for E.Z. is discipline because
he needs to learn how to pay attentions and the teacher needs to redirect him often. E.Z. was in
pre-k for two years and last year he was three years old and he needed improvements with
academically, socially and behavior. He matured this year so much in the areas he needed to
grow. By seeing the difference from last year and this year he became more independent and
understands how to follow directions. When I asked his father what area is his limitation he said
speech. I agree because at times it is hard to understand him. E.Z overall his on track for his age
and shows interest in learning. He is willing to participate and be active with his classmates.

V. Conclusion and Recommendations

By gathering and observing E.Z, I have noticed that he is on track with his developmental
learning. The developmental checklist that I used was beneficial because I could see what he can
or cant do. He is interested in learning and socializing with his classmates and teacher. He does
not have separation anxiety when leaving his parents. By seeing his growth from last year to this
year, he matured and can listen to the teacher and his attention span increased. E.Z is doing fine
in the class because he is advanced a year compared to the other students because hes a secondyear pre-kindergartener. He needs reminders to listen and keep his hands to himself. At times, he
gets too rough with his classmates. A recommendation for E.Z is to figure out a plan about his
speech issue. Parents can ask the doctor on their next visit to see if that is normal or is he needs
speech therapy. I know the family is active with E.Z and all I can say is too keep it up because
that is the way he is growing as a person.
