LAKEVIEW Demonstrating ongoing
dedication to promoting healthy lifestyles,
Spectrum Health Kelsey Hospital recently
awarded four Lakeview Middle School stu-
dents with United States Savings Bonds for
earning Presidential Fitness Awards.
Established in 1966, the Presidential Fit-
ness Award is a yearly competition which
encourages students aged 6 to 17 years to
reach robust fitness standards in each of five
events. To be eligible for this award, students
must score in the 85th percentile or higher, as
determined by a 1985 School Population Fit-
ness Survey. Measuring strength, endurance,
quickness, balance and flexibility, events in-
clude curl-ups, shuttle run, endurance run/

MCC Foundation supports

learning projects
SIDNEY The Montcalm Community College Founda-
tion is supporting a variety of learning projects at MCC.
The MCC Foundation Board of Directors recently
awarded $7,854.60 to fund six institutional grants. The
grants support teaching and learning and promote innova-
tion at the college.
The 2010 grants are helping to fund two nursing proj-
ects, including a Simulation Enhancement project, which
will obtain a touch-screen mechanism for the simulation
manikin, and the Personal Digital Assistant for Clinical
Nursing Faculty project. Additional grant funding is sup-
porting the One Book One County Montcalm, Exploring
Zoology Outside of the Classroom A Trip to the Muse-
ums of Chicago, Space Travel The Final Frontier summer
camp for youths, and Anatomy and Physiology Revealed
CD projects.
The institutional grants assist campus groups in reach-
ing and expanding their academic objectives, said MCC Di-
rector of Institutional Advancement Terry Smith.
The MCC Foundation was initiated with one major
purpose to support the colleges learning activities,
Smith said. The institutional grants program is one sig-
nificant way the foundation carries out its mission.
The MCC Foundation initiated the grant program in
1984. Since then, the foundation has provided more than
$136,000 to more than 100 projects. Visit www.montcalm.

Cedar Springs Womens Club
honors Cynthia Caldwell
Cedar Springs Womens Club honored this years
Outstanding Member of the year, Cynthia Caldwell,
recognizing her talent for organization and creativity
while promoting the club. Pictured here with her hus-
band, Tom, daughter, Tylene Cooley, and one of her
five grandchildren, Rachel Cooley, she took time from
catering the club lunch Thursday, June 3 to accept
her award. She also serves as the current treasurer of
the club.
Her early background included working in an of-
fice while in the 11th grade, and was doing all the pa-
perwork for six salesmen by the time she graduated as
her class valedictorian.
Married after high school, her husband men-
tioned many instances of her talent for helping others
through organizing. She never accepted the verdict of
the doctors after suffering a stroke years ago that she
would probably not be able to work outside her home
again. She helped with the Channel 35 auction for ten
years, worked 25 years for a government agency, and
worked as her townships deputy clerk for 9 years.
Her last retirement was from a retail fabric store af-
ter 15 years of helping others. Not retired from vol-
unteering, she visits the grieving, and those who are
in or home from the hospital, often sharing her talent
for cooking. She pre-organized items for the Womens
Club annual rummage sale, and has been known to
donate not only her time, but her talents in many
ways to promote the club. In the past, she graciously
opened her home to the club for the annual Christmas
Tea.
She is not only organized, but also talented, shar-
ing many handmade items for the ticket raffles to
benefit the club, encouraging other members to do
handcrafts. The club has been the recipient of many
of these donated and hand crafted items. Her talent
for organizing included the Clubs Red Flannel Craft
booth, and arranging for the creative items sold in the
retail stores.
Her hobbies include cooking, sewing, crocheting,
gardening, reading, Cedar Springs Womens Club and
helping people. As she states herself, I try to be the
type of woman that the devil says each morning Oh,
no, shes up!

parents of toddlers will agree its impossible to
supervise children every second of every day,
says the ndPAs executive director, Kristin
Goffman. isolation fencing can help prevent
unauthorized access to a pool during those brief
moments when caregivers realize their child is
missing.
n use Alarms: if the house forms one side of
the barrier to the pool, doors leading to the pool
area should be protected with alarms that sound
when the door is unexpectedly opened. these
are reasonably priced, but you must be commit-
ted to their use for alarms to provide effective
protection.
n Be Prepared - take Classes: make sure
of emergency. And when children are in the
pool, designate a water watcher to maintain
eye-to-eye contact at all times.
n Be Safer: A telephone should be kept pool-
side so adults never have to leave the area to an-
swer it while children are swimming. And never
leave toys in the pool area, including floating de-
vices such as chlorine dispensers that look like
toys.
According to research conducted in the unit-
ed States and Australia, a fence is the only truly-
effective barrier, but other protections help. the
NDPA recently published its first paper on the
subject. With recommendations ranging from
fencing to safety devices to water safety, the
free paper can be found at www.ndpa.org in the
Safety tips section.
By relying on layers of protection around
the pool, you can give your family years of safer
relaxation and enjoyment. But as many precau-
tionary measures as you take, there is no sub-
stitute for proper supervision and awareness of
your surroundings.

April was NOT a great month for me. I did manage to maintain my weight and did lose some more inches

but I let life got in the way several times and I just never got a rhythm back! I am denitely realizing that
I am a true creature of habit! I like things to be in a constant rhythm, and when that gets thrown off, my
focus gets thrown off. But, Ive taken a deep breath and re-focused, rather than giving up like I used to Greeting Cards
do, and forging forward to hit my ultimate goal of 150 lbs. It may take a year instead of the 6 months I
had hoped, but hopefully, taking it off nice and slow will mean it is permanent!

Gallbladder
As many of you know, we can live without a gallbladder. It is best to keep it if you can. But sometimes the gallbladder gets
diseased and has to be removed. So what is the gallbladder and how do we keep it healthy?
The gallbladder is a sac attached to the common bile duct and it collects bile as it is being produced by the liver. The bile
has many things in it, mostly waste material that the liver has cleaned out of the blood. One of the components of bile is bile
salts. When we eat something with fat in it, a signal is sent to the gallbladder to contract it. This squeezes some of the stored
bile into the small intestines. The bile salts help the fatty food mix with the rest of the watery material you have eaten. It acts
like a detergent to help the water and fat to mix.
Over the last twenty years we have been telling people to avoid fats. As a result many people have more gallbladder
problems because there is not enough stimulation of the muscles in the gallbladder. We need to eat good fats, especially plant
fats, like olive oil. Most of us should have two tablespoons of cold-pressed olive oil every day. When people drink more pop,
tea, coffee, and juices while having less water, we see chronic dehydration as a factor in poor gallbladder function and the
formation of stones.
Most people do not know that surgery may not be needed if gall stones are present. Herbal Hydrangea will help dissolve
calcium gallstones. Apples and apple juice will soften the stones that are made of cholesterol. Using a gall bladder flush will
help force the sludge and remaining stones out of the gallbladder. We should do this every six to twelve months and if there
are gallbladder problems, every three months is a better plan.
The formula for a gall bladder flush is as follows: For two days, eat or drink only water, apple or pear juice, apple sauce,
raw apples or pears. This softens the stones. Drink lots of water. At bedtime of the second day,
mix 2-4 ounces of olive oil with 2-4 ounces of organic lemon juice or grapefruit juice and drink this
mixture. Then go to bed and sleep as much as you can on your right side. During the night, as the
gall bladder is contracting and pushing out the stones, you might experience some moderate to
severe cramps. This pain will subside as the stones pass. In your next bowel movement or two, you
may see some green sludge or gallstones (green pea or bean shaped objects that float).
Do not do this gallbladder cleanse if you are weak or ill, have a fever, have right upper abdominal
pain, or have an infected gall bladder. Please note: there is a very slim chance that a gall stone
could get stuck in the bile ducts as a result of doing this flush. If this happens you need to go to
the Emergency Room. There is a possibility that you would need to have surgery to remove the
gallbladder and the impacted stone. This would be very rare (I have never seen this happen in 12
years), but you need to understand that it could happen and be prepared to respond if it does
occur.
So drink plenty of water, eat good fats, especially from plants, do a gallbladder flush from time
to time and keep that gallbladder healthy.

dogs, $20 for cats, as well as a refundable spay/neuter deposit ($50
for dogs, $25 for cats) unless the animal is fixed already. New
animals are brought into the shelter on a daily basis, so if the one you
want is gone by the time you call, the Montcalm County Animal
Shelter will do its best to find you a dog or cat that matches what
youre looking for. The Montcalm County Animal Shelter is open
to the public Mon.-Fri. 12:30pm to 5pm, except Wed. 12:30pm to
