Electric and Electronic Systems in Vehicles

Part I: Electric and Control/Power Electronic Systems

prof. Paolo S. Crovetti
Exam Program
with reference to the lecture notes available in the website

1. Electric Systems in Vehicles: all (Sect. 2.1: no derivations, Sect. 3.4, 3.5: derivations are optional, main
concepts must be known and understood; Sect. 3.3, 3.4, 3.5: mean voltage (for resistive load) calculations
are optional)
2. Electric Energy Balance: all (Sect. 2.1: focus on concepts rather than on formulas)
3. Power Distribution Network: all (the thermal equivalent circuit in Sect. 1.3.1 will not be requested.
Analysis and results in Sect. 1.3.1 are part of the program)
4. Switches: all, possible references to the characteristics of nMOS and pMOS transistors which can be
found in the notes on transistors in the previous courses material directory.
5. Electric and Electronic Systems for Powertrain: Sect.1 (basic concepts about EVs and series/parallel
HEVs); pros and cons of energy storage elements and electric motors for traction (qualitative description,
no formulas).
6. Voltage Regulators:

Section 1: all (just a qualitative description).

Section 2: all (the derivation of the formulas for DCM operation is optional, the concepts should be
known)
Application examples: Exercises on Switching Mode Power Supplies can be regarded as
recommended optional material. The part, presented in class, concerning the minimum inductance
to have CCM operation should be known.

7. Actuators and Drivers: all (Sect. 3.1.2. Opening/closing delay calculations for R-L loads are optional,
characteristic plane analysis in Fig.2 and in Fig.10 is optional).
8. Electronic Control Unit (ECU) Design Flow: all
9. Gasoline Engine Control: all, (part 2.4.2 concerning contactless position sensors: just a qualitative
description, no formulas; part 2.6: just the sensor in Fig.23a, the second is optional)
10. ABS and ESP: all
11. Electromagnetic Compatibility:

Section 1: Sections 1.1; 1.2 and 1.3 (just the basic concepts)
Section 2: suggested reading (optional)

Students of past years can be tested, upon request, on the program of the year in which they have followed
the course (please inform me at the beginning of the oral test).
