Wonderful Project

Plant Science Abstract
Our project for this year is to collect 20 different plants. The 20 different plants consist
of : 7 weeds, 5 perennial (woody or herbaceous), 3 trees, and 5 of any choice. The purpose of
this project is to identify the growth characteristics that allow the plant to survive in a chosen
habitat or growing zone. This project allows us to use our knowledge to identify the plants, also
allows us to have hands-on experience. We are trying to identify the different plant collected
from a different habitat. We collected our plants from Reedley, which is a different habitat and
allows us to investigate what changes occur when moved to a different growing zone.
The first thing we did was collecting the plants from different habitats and placing them
in different ziplock bags. This allowed us to identify what type of category the plant belonged
in. Once we collected all our plants, my partner Isabelle, took the plants home and placed the
plants in the refrigerator to keep them from drying. After a day or two, we washed the plants that
were dirty and allowed them to dry. Once the plants were completely dry, we started to press the
collected plants.
The materials we used to press our plants were wax paper, scissors, plants, and textbooks.
To press the plants, we opened the textbook and placed a sheet of wax paper with the plant on
one side of the textbook. We held our hand on the side where the plant was and closed the book

quickly. Caution: the plant should fit in the book and stay in place while closing the book. Once
we pressed all of our plants, we left them for about two weeks to be fully pressed.
After two weeks, we were told by our plant science teacher to start laminating the plants
that have been pressed. The materials we used to laminate our plants were white cardboard
paper, scissors, pressed plants, and laminate roll. To laminate the plants, we placed the plant on
the cardboard paper nicely and made sure it was in one position. We then measured the laminate
sheet with the paper to cut the right amount of the laminate sheet. Once we cut the sheet, we
made sure the plant was properly placed on the sheet. I unwrapped one side and my partner held
the other side and slowly placed the sheet over the plant. We made sure the sheet covered the
plant completely and then smoothed out any air bubbles.
In conclusion, all of our were collected, pressed, and were laminated. One difficulty we
faced was that the plant would not stay in place on the cardboard while laminating the plants.
This caused air bubbles and wrinkles on the paper and did not look pleasing. We should have
been more careful while placing the sheet over the plants. Overall, all of our plants were pressed
nicely and laminated. This project taught us a lot of skills and made us use most of the materials
that was taught to us over the past few years.
