DIODES

Diode is a specialized electric components

with 2 electrodes called anode and cathode,
generally, a diodes are made of germanium, silicon
and selenium, and some of it is comprised of metal
electrodes or filled with a pure elemental gas at low
pressure. . Properties of diodes that can conduct
current in the forward voltage and reverse voltage
inhibit the flow. Diodes derived from two words
approach, namely the anode and cathode electrodes.

1. Function of Diode
The most common function of diode is to let the electrical current pass in one direction
called forward direction, and block the current from opposite direction called reverse
direction. Beside that main function, you can also use the diode for converting the alternating
current to direct current and sometimes it can be used for amplitude modulation for radio
signals.
2. General symbols of Diode

the symbol used for semiconductor diode in circuit diagram specifies the type of the
diode, there are a few alternative symbols for some type of diode, through it the differences
are minor. The triangle on the symbol points to the forward direction, some types of diode are

Diode
LED
Photodiode
Schottky diode
Transient Voltage Supression diode
Tunnel diode
Varicap diode
Zener diode.

3. Structure of Diode

The structure of the diode for the first time. Plate is designed around the cathode, the
cathode is planted in a heater, at which time the cathode is heated, electrons are there on the
cathode will move toward the plate.

4. Type of Diode
1. The Diode
There are two kinds of this
type of diode, there are
silicon diode and germanium
diode, the silicon diode has
the forward voltage 0.7 V and
germanium 0.3 V forward
voltages.

2. LED (light emiting diode)

Diodes of this type has a phosphor layer that can emit light when get polarity on
both poles. LED has a predefined maximum current limit, so when the current that
flowing through it above that limit, the LED wont longlasting.

3. Zener diodes

The function of the zener diode is a voltage stabilizer. Besides the zener diode can
also be used as a voltage divider at a certain level for the safety circuit.

4. Photo dioda

Photo diode is a type of light-sensitive

components. This diode will deliver if there is
light with particular intensity. Example of photo
diode application is for light sensor system
(optical).
5. Diode varactor

The advantages of this diode is able to produce the certain capacitance according
to the supplaied voltages to the diode.

5. Characteristics of Diode

Diode curve is a curve on the pre-voltage characteristics of diode forward

(forward) and pre reverse voltage (reverse). From the pictures of these characteristics can be
analyzed that the diode current will flow after external voltage to overcome the potential
barrier, then the current forward would be good.

6. Aplication of Diode

On my first explaination ive explained you a little aplications of diode, and this is more
applications of the diode on our daily life, you can use the diode for:
a.
b.
c.
d.
e.

Voltage Multiplier
Voltage stabillizer
For rectifier for diode bridge.
Indicator, this is LED.
And Usually for light sensor, this is photo diode.
