Pre-AP molecule project for 2016 Firm Deadline, this project is due on Oct 18 2016

Create a 3 dimensional model of your assigned molecule. Atoms should be spherical and
bonds stick-like.
Come in for tutorials if you need help, and keep in mind that projects done at the last
minute often have low grades associated with them. You are expected to ask questions
and get help as needed, on your own, without prompting from the teacher. Do this project
early to avoid mistakes and fragile molecules.
Molecule is turned in via a hand-made container that is creative and reflects the nature,
function, or use of the molecule. For example, a molecule used in cooking could be turned
in with a container decorated like a cookbook. Containers must be creative, hand-made
(not store-bought) clean, neat, and eye catching. Spend time making this look good. DO
NOT JUST TURN IN A CONTAINER THAT YOU BOUGHT you have to MAKE the
container or change it enough that it is uniquely yours and MOSTLY handmade.
The model must reflect the colors of atoms as described by IUPAC. This insures that all
students can compare their molecule project with the projects of others and understand
the composition of other molecules. The color of the bonds should not be the same color
as any of the atoms on your molecule. Red = oxygen, Black = carbon, yellow = sulfur, green
= chlorine/bromine, white = hydrogen, silver = any metal, and ask for help if you have
other atoms you need colors assigned to.
Find a way to attach your name, a CREATIVE title, period, date, and the name of your
molecule to the actual molecule NOT THE CONTAINER. Include both the common name
and the scientific name in IUPAC form of the molecule as well as the chemical formula
(for example the chemical formula for glucose is C 6H12O6) Make sure this information
doesn't fall off. Make sure all of this information is TYPED not handwritten.
Projects that fall apart before or during the grading process will lose points, so design a
sturdy molecule and container that can survive transport. Please do not make enormous
molecules as tall as a person due to limitations in classroom storage, keep it down to a
reasonable size: it should easily fit on a classroom desk.
Write a 1 page (1 full page!) typed in size 12 font, single spaced paper about your
molecule.
Paragraph 1: 5 sentences in a paragraph about the common name and IUPAC name of the
molecule, chemical formula, and any related molecules that are similar to this one. Include a
detailed description about the structure of this molecule (what atoms, bonds, shapes does it
have?) Any health concerns?
Paragraph 2: 5 sentences in a paragraph about the history and discovery of this molecule.
Who discovered it, who first used it, and what were the circumstances around the discovery?
Any historical significance?

Paragraph 3: 5 sentences in a paragraph about the functions and uses of this molecule, when
and where its been used before, how and where we get this molecule, and other information
about its use or function.
Paragraph 4: 7 sentences in a paragraph of other interesting information, and this information
is not used elsewhere in the paper.
Include a color picture of your molecule on a separate page from the 1 page paper. This
picture must be in color, representing the IUPAC colors of the atoms. You can print off a
black and white picture and then use a marker or colored pencil to color in the atoms, if
you wish. There must be a color key on this page, telling what the identity of each color
of atom is.
Colorful, artful, eye catching projects are encouraged, but your project should look neat
and clean. The structure of your molecule should be correct, with all double and triple
bonds represented properly. High level, high quality, pre-AP level work is expected. NO
STYROFOAM. ASK PERMISSION BEFORE USING EDIBLE ITEMS. No
sticky/smelly/messy items. Recycled materials encouraged, there is no need to purchase
anything for this project. THINK about NATURE and your environment, what can you
use?

USE THE RUBRIC as a guide. Use it to be sure you have included all requirements. TURN
IN YOUR RURIC with the project.
You are turning in the following: 1) container with molecule inside 2) the 1 page paper inside
the container 3) the rubric inside the container 3) the color picture of your molecule with
color key inside the container too
Projects that are 1 day late lose 15 points. Projects that are 2 days late lose 30 points. Projects will
not be accepted more than 2 days late and will receive a grade of zero. Projects that include
information simply cut and pasted off of the internet and not written in the students own words will be
graded as though the information was not there. Research and write your project in your own words.
This is a Pre-AP level project and will be graded as such. Sloppy, messy, last-minute projects will
receive grades reflective of the lack of student effort and achievement. Take your time on this project,
but use your time wisely and produce an excellent product.

NAME: _______________________________________________________________ FIRM DUE DATE OCTOBER 18th 2016

Molecule project rubric

A = absent

P= poor F= fair G=good E=excellent

Criteria : turn in 1) color picture 2) molecule 3) essay all inside the container.
Use containers big enough to hold them all.

Molecule is 3 dimensional, correct, and is of an appropriate size that fits on a student desk.
Molecule 3 dimensional shape is correct. Molecule and all papers turned in INSIDE the
container. Molecules that fall apart during grading will be graded as INCORRECT.

Atoms are spherical and bonds are stick like. All single, double and triple bonds are correct,
and are not the same color as any of the atoms.
Model has a creative title, student name, date, period, common name, and correct UPAC
name of molecule attached to it. Formula and scientific name of the molecule are also
included. All Information is typed. Subscripts used in formula.

Rubric turned in with project and has student name on it. Student should self-report on the
project and USE the rubric as a guide on what to do.

CREATIVITY points: project is colorful, attractive, clean, neat, and creative, unique. No
Styrofoam. No food unless teacher signs here:__________ Container is hand-made or
mostly hand-made or decorated enough to seem home-made.

Model is not falling apart. Model is sturdy enough to survive transport. Model is totally
complete with no missing atoms or fallen off atoms or bonds.

Molecule, essay, rubric and picture are turned in inside a container that reflects the nature,
function, or description of the molecule assigned. Container is neat, creative, and well
thought out, student took time and effort to create a container for their molecule that is
reflective of the molecules nature and function. Think creatively! Ask for help if you need it.
Dont just buy a container.
Model reflects the colors of atoms as directed with carbon being black, hydrogen is white,
etc. Bonds are not the same color as any of the atoms.

Color picture turned in with a color key. This color picture is SEPARATE from the written 1
page essay. The colors on this picture must match the colors on the 3-d model and be correct
according to IUPAC. Picture includes key/legend for the colors of the atoms.
1 full page paper is written, single spaced, size 12 font and information is submitted in
PARAGRAPH form, not bullet points or incomplete sentences. 4 paragraphs included, and
paper is ONE FULL PAGE OF TYPEWRITTEN MATERIAL.
5 sentence minimum about the common name and IUPAC name of the molecule, chemical
formula, and any related molecules that are similar to this one. Include a detailed description
about the structure of this molecule (what atoms, bonds, shapes does it have?) Any health
concerns? Student used proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
5 sentence minimum in a paragraph about the history and discovery of this molecule. Who
discovered it, who first used it, and what were the circumstances around the discovery?
Student used proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
5 sentence minimum in a paragraph about the functions and uses of this molecule, when and
where its been used before, how and where we get this molecule, and other information
about its use or function. Student used proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
7 sentence minimum in a paragraph of other interesting information, and this information is
not used elsewhere in the paper. Student used proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Entire Project is neat, easy to read, clean, objects and typed information are glued down
properly, neatly, and are not hanging off, no stains or messes present, and molecule has very
few paint drips or messes, and looks neat and nice. No wet paint or glue is evident showing
low quality work.
Entire project is of high quality, Pre-AP level work demonstrating knowledge of molecular
structure and bonding, and project shows a strong student work ethic, student worked hard
and gave effort.
