Material Development

Studies and practically undertakes principles, procedures, design,

implementation and evaluation of language teaching material.
Material:
Anything that facilitates the learning of language
Informative: informing the learner about the target language
Instructional: guiding the learner in practicing the language
Experiential: providing the learner with experience of the language in
use
Eliciting: encouraging the learner to use the language
Exploratory: helping the learner to make discoveries about the
language
Syllabus:
Outline of topics to be taught in a module
Descriptive in nature
Prepared by administration cell or the teacher of an institute
Kinds of Syllabi:
Synthetic Syllabus
Analytic Syllabus
Synthetic Syllabus
Step by step teaching
Additive style
Separate teaching of different parts of language
These parts are connected but independent of one another
Process of continuous buildup of parts
Whole structure of a language is learned this way
The learner's task is to integrate and re-synthesize the language
Different grammatical structures are used to teach/break the language
(structures, lexis, functions, and notions)
Individual grammatical structures as building blocks
Language consists of a finite number of items- learning this finite set of
Items is a sufficient condition for communication
These structures are used according to their
contexts
fluency of occurrence

contrastive difficulty
situation need
pedagogic convenience.
Product Oriented syllabus-(knowledge and skills that the learner should
gain as a result of the instructions that are given to the learner by the
end of the course to enable communication)
Lexical, structural, notional, and functional syllabuses are synthetic
Analytic Syllabus
Organized in terms of the purposes for which the learner is learning the
language
Requires specific kind of performance necessary to meet the purposes
Focus is not the grammatical system of the language but the
communicative purpose for which the language is used.
So the content and activities are designed to facilitate the
communicative task of the language.
Analytic syllabus is defined in terms of situation, topics, items and other
academic subject matter.
The total language system is divided into a set of discrete pieces of
language which are all dependent on one another
Has a wider meaning/ perspective (exposed to ungraded language)
Concentrates on holistical side (the whole of something) of language
Process-oriented -the emphasis is on the process, the series of action is
important.
Requires learner to show their analytic capabilities
Procedural, process, and task syllabuses are all samples of the analytic
syllabus type
