ResidentialCode,andtheNationalFireProtectionAssociation(NFPA)5000:BuildingConstructionand
SafetyCode.
ASTMInternational(ASTM),formerlyknownastheAmericanSocietyforTestingandMaterials(ASTM),
isagloballyrecognizedleaderinthedevelopmentanddeliveryofinternationalvoluntaryconsensus
standards.Today,some12,000ASTMstandardsareusedaroundtheworldtoimproveproductquality,
enhancesafety,facilitatemarketaccessandtrade,andbuildconsumerconfidence.
ASTMusesanopen,thirdpartyconsensusprocesstocreatestandards.TheprocessforupdatingtheC1396
standarddrawsequallyfromrepresentativeswithmanufacturing,materialapplication,andgeneralinterest
backgrounds.TheGypsumAssociationparticipatesbylendingengineeringandexpertiseto11ofASTMs
Committees,includingCommitteeC11onGypsumandRelatedBuildingMaterialsandSystems.
Anotherstandard,ASTMC1264,StandardSpecificationforSampling,Inspection,Rejection,Certification,
Packaging,Marking,Shipping,Handling,andStorageofGypsumPanelProductsprovidesstrictguidelines
thatensureonlythehighestqualitygypsumboardissoldtothepublicandthattheproductremainssafeand
securenotonlythroughoutthemanufacturingprocessbutalsoafteritreachesinyourhomeoroffice.This
standardrequiresthateachgypsumboardorpackageofboardsbeclearlymarkedwithinformationregarding
productthicknessandthenameoftheproducer,aswellasotherinformation.In2011,thisstandardwas
strengthenedtorequireeachindividualsheetofgypsumboardmanufacturedtothestandardsoftheASTM
C1396havethefollowinginformationclearlyprintedonthebacksurfaceofeachboard:

Acodeidentifyingthedateandtimeofmanufacture.
Thecountryofmanufactureasdesignatedbyaspecialthreelettercode(USAfortheUnitedStates).
ThisupdatedstandardappliestoallgypsumboardsoldintheUnitedStatesandCanada.Ithelpsconsumers,
constructioncompanies,andbuildinginspectorsidentifytheoriginofaparticularpieceofgypsumboardand
providesassurancethatonlyhighqualitygypsumisbeingusedintheconstructionofhomesoroffices.
